View Full Version : Chickenpox!
My grandbaby is 18 months old. For Thanksgiving she got chickenpox! She'd had the vaccine, but is absolutely peppered with itchy spots. :( Poor kid! She's not terribly sick, but trying to keep one so young from scratching is going to be a challenge!
They're questioning the vaccine that was given int heir area because it seems many of the kids who had it have since gotten the pox. What a bummer!

Poor thing, it must be terribly hard for her not to itch. My son had them, but very lightly and did a good job at not scratching at them. Hope she gets along with them okay...:)

So sorry to hear that your grandbaby is sick, and hope she doesn't scratch them. Don't understand how she would get them if she had the vaccine. Good thing they are asking questions. You think if you have your child vaccinated, they are protected. Both my daughters were vaccinated as soon as a safe chickenpox vaccine was available. I had never had the pox until about two years ago. I got some kind of mild form of what they said was either chickenpox or something closely related. Neither of my daughters ever got them.
Take care, and wishing your sweet granddaughter a very speedy recovery!!

P.S. My worry was not so much the chickenpox and the shingles later in life. A man we know has shingles now, and they are in his eye. They say he is miserable.

Poor baby! My daughter did not have the vaccine and was COVERED with them (even in her ears and mouth) when she was 11 months old. It was horrible!!!!
My son has had the vaccine and when he got them (Christmas before last), it was centralized to just the inside of his mouth...and it was BAD!!! He couldn't even drink water without screaming out in pain.:(
We all survived, though.

My mother had the shingles when she was in her later 70's. Not good! She had it mostly in her arms and shoulders and was in soooo much pain. Most pain relievers didn't help that much. I can't remember what the Dr. had her on, but she was still miserable.

The bad thing about chickenpox is that the virus stays in your body for years and can reoccur as shingles. I had shingles 3 times in one year in '03 and I will NEVER forget it. They are linear and occur along a nerveline. I had them on the right side of my head and face, and behind the right ear. All three times in the same places. I thought I would never get rid of it.
Have you tried putting baking soda in the bath water? It's very soothing and if that doesn't help much try Aveeno bath oil. It helps too.
My daughter, Mama to the little one with chickenpox, is a nurse, so I'm sure she's getting good care. Her poor little feet are so broke out that she cries and walks on her tip toes when she wants to get somewhere.
I wish we lived closer so I could help out with her now. I know it's exhausting taking care of a sick child. :(
Luckily my Mom lives close to them, so she's been helping out. It's good for the kids to have great-grandma around, and equally good for her to have them!

How lucky that your daughter is a nurse! I'm sure she knows exactly what to do for her. Oh, her poor feet.:(
I was thinking how great it is that her great-grandma is still living. That's amazing. You must be a very young grandma.
I was barely 19 when I had my oldest and my Mom was the same when she had me. So Great-grandma is 71 years old but acts much younger. Fortunately she's in good condition and loves to keep active. She still goes dancing and loves to go for walks around town. SHe babysits the girls a couple times a week or more and enjoys it a lot. She has them overnight and takes them places with her with no hesitation. The little one calls her "G-mama" and is as comfy with her as she is her own parents. The older one (who will be 7 on the 30th) thinks great gramma walks on water. LOL

That is so neat! My mother is 71 also and I had my first at 18. I don't have grandchildren yet, my son and his wife have not had good news in that department, but I keep hoping.........Everyone tells me there's nothing like grandchildren!

awwwww poor baby! When she's a little older you can tell her a story about a girl named Kimberly (ME) that got the chicken pox when she was 18. She thought it was a zit on her face and when she went with her dad to get her prom dress he informed her that she was COVERED in spots all over her back.
I sat home for my senior prom in my dress, wearing my Prom Queen tiara that was nicely dropped off for me, covered in chicken pox with my dad! So, although it is hard to see her itchy at least she is getting it over with young :)
Oh Kimberly, that would stink!
I thought it was bad enough that I had to miss my last year of trick and treating because I had chicken pox over halloween! LOL
khardy57, my daughter had been told she would likely not be able to concieve due to her years of ovarian cysts. She sees her 2 little ones as miracles.
I see them as the gold in my golden years. It's true that there's just no comparison to grandkids. You're free to love them, spoil them, and are free OF the tough job that parents have. I have 2 younger kids so hope to have more grands in the future, but am able to focus on these 2 till then.

I'm going to hold onto this! My daughter in law has polycystic ovaries and went to a fertility specialist earlier this year. She had minor surgery to clean her ovaries up and the Dr. said there was no reason she couldn't get pregnant. My son was tested too. They wanted to give her shots that cost $1000/each:( :( Needless to say, they couldn't afford that. My son has a new job now that has better insurance and they hope to try again. I'd love to be a grandma!
khardy57, I hope this time next year you'll be talking about how in love you are with your new grandbaby. You seem like someone who would make a wonderful gramma. I'll put you on my prayer list for that to happen. HUGS
