Poor Layla always has cards stacked against her.
I just got a call from the vet opthalmology department, and Layla has a tumor in her eye. I will take her in Thursday for another look at it. They will try to determine if it's growing into her eyeball. Best case scenario, we may be able to remove the tumor if it's small enough and save her eye. Worst case, it could be painful, affecting her vision, and she may need to lose her whole eye.
I just want to cry :(

Thanks for all the good thoughts. I'm feeling better today. I know Layla's a fighter and we're just going to try to stay positive and see how it turns out at the appointment on Thursday. I am sure it's not bothering her right now. She moves her eye around just fine and can see without problems. So I'll just stay strong until Thursday!

You're a good Mama Lindsey....you'll know in your heart when it's time to stop prolonging her life and having her go through so much. Sometimes it would be so nice if they could tell us.

Oh Lindsey, I'm so sorry. Poor baby Layla, she has had a rough time of it. I sure hope everything turns out OK.
Eye or no eye she will still be the happy Layla we all know. She has wonderful parents who are looking after her.

Thanks for all the good thoughts everyone! Layla will be okay! She is scheduled for surgery on the 16th. They think they can remove the tumor and not the whole eye. From what they can see, the tumor is on the surface of the eye and isn't going too deep. But it is growing, and if we leave it, it will probably grow deeper and become very painful and she'd lose some vision. In that case, her whole eye would need to be removed. We've caught it early enough that her eye should still be okay!

Thanks again for all your prayers... we did our taxes yesterday and will be getting enough back to pay for Layla's surgery. We were pretty sure it was going to eat up all of our savings but it turns out this one will kind of be a freebie for us. Thank goodness!

Wonderful that Layla's surgery was a success. Now I hope this little girl gets a break and will be free from all troubles for the rest of her life.
How is Layla recuperating ? I hope she is doing well. Hugs

Layla is doing really well! She is doing okay with the eye drops, she doesn't mind them too much. She hates her cone, but that's to be expected. We try to scratch her ears as best we can for her! She also hates us trying to clean her face to get the crusties off around her eye, without putting pressure on the eye itself. When she sees me coming with a washcloth, she turns away. But otherwise, the surgery site is healing nicely and is not bleeding anymore!

Layla had bloody diarrhea on Saturday and we took a sample to our local vet who was SURE it was giardia. Then she did a test and called back saying it is not giardia because the test came back negative. She said she'd call back after more tests. She didn't call back until today saying she looked again and saw cysts so she thinks it is giardia and we need to treat her and maybe the other two dogs too.... But Layla has been fine (solid poops, eating and drinking, normal energy) since that one incident and the other dogs have always been fine. It makes no sense to me. I am so frustrated! I don't want to medicate her without any hard evidence. She is going through enough. Ugh. One thing after another.

Lindsey, I wouldn't treat Layla if her stools have been normal since Saturday. My Rowdy had Giardia when we were camped in the mountains and he had diarrhea for days and days. We were in an area without a vet, so we had to break camp and take him to a vet. They didn't have any medicine in a small enough dose for him (we were in rural New Mexico - guess they don't have many small dogs there) so we had to go to Santa Fe to a pharmacy that does compounding to have them make his medicine. By that time he had had diarrhea for about 8 days. I gave him the medicine and he didn't poop for 6 days. I just knew I was going to have to give him an enema!!! LOL!
Anyway, I wouldn't treat Layla if her poop is normal now.

Thanks Gayle. We decided not to treat her. Scott called the vet back (I'm too scared lol) and told her we weren't going to pick up the medication.
