Hi all! I'm not sure if this is where I am supposed to ask this...if not...I apologize Admin and please move to correct forum.

I am a crafty person.....I want to make a fleece blanket (the ones that are tied around the edges) but, I'm not sure if I am supposed to sew around the edges first or just cut and tie? Has anyone here ever made one? If so would you mind giving me some pointers...

Thanks Ladies!

Brenda

I've never made one, but my friend made 3 for my babies and they are not sewn in any way, just tied. Hope this helps.

Hi Janet! Yes it does...thanks..I have the general idea how it's done...do they use 2 layers of fabric? seems to me that would make it like a bag without an opening....did that make sense?! LOL

Yes you're right. The ones that were made for me have one side looking like a tie dye, with lots of beautiful colors and the other side is a plain material that matches the colors on the other side. I really love them and so do my babies. I have been thinking of making some myself, just so I'll have extra ones.

I've seen the type of materials used on making these blankets and I love them!! So soft and comfy. The fur kids have their own and id love to make a big one for me and hubby.

I've thought the same thing!!! Making a big one for me to wrap in while watching TV. They are so so soft.

That's exactlly what I'm going to do....I had bought some wintery looking fleece to make pajama pants for my kids...the girl at the fabric store didn't cut the fabric long enough so...I had to buy more fabric and have all this wintery fleece and didn't know what to do with it...I make coats for furbabies but this fabric would be more for the boys and I have girls!! and so don't most of my friends...Plus I have so much of it I'd have too much left over with nothing to do with it...So....I thought I would make one of these blankets...It probably wouldn't be big enough for two people unless you wanted to be REALLY REALLY close! LOL! The fleece is such a nice cozy fabric and easy to work with...I made myself a bathrobe and I LOVE it! so nice and warm! Well, I'm off to cut and tie!

My daughter and DIL make them, they are so warm. She uses 2 yards of fabric per side. Usually a print and then a contrasting color. Lay them out and measure 4 inches in from each corner so you have notches on each corner, cut out those 4 inch sections. Then measure in from the edge 4 inches and mark and make cuts with good scissors, then just go back and tie them off. One secret is to not tie them too tight so that they don't pucker. They wash beautifully and I have never had such warm blankets. We have them for all family members and even the dogs have them on their beds and in the truck. There is no sewing which makes them pretty fast to put together. Good luck and let me know how they turn out.

I started to do this last night...when I got to the corners I didn't know what to do..I had to cut off the bottom (where I had already cut and tied) because it didn't look right....

So what you are saying is I have to actually cut out the corner?
And the tied pieces are 4 inches long? Do I tie each 4 inch peice or do I take 2 and tie them together?

Before you start tying, cut the 4" corners that will leave 1 -4" square notch at each corner. You should have the material laying together llike you want it to be tied. Then you will cut up 4" all the way around and tie them together. It should come out even at the corners.

I"m sorry it is hard to expain but once done it makes sense. I hope this helps. Let me know.
Debbie

With the material laying on top of each other you tie the two pieces of fabric together.

That's what I thought...thank you very much..

I'm interested in this, too, but I'm still unclear how they are tied. I'll try to ask my question in words as clear as I can. Do you leave each 4" strip you are about to tie together, against each other as if they were one piece and knot them, or do you separate them and tie them together? Hope that was clear. Seems like the first way would be neater in appearance.

you have to cut out a 4 inch square in each corner...the strips are 4 inches long...you take the 2 (side by side) strips (both top and bottom) and knot them together...I hope I described this right...it's hard to describe it!

Marilyn, you want to tie the pieces of blanket together into a knot separately. Like you are tying a pair of shoes. I know it is very hard to put into words. You could try it both ways and see how you like it best. I am just afraid the knot together would not lay right? Hope this is understandable?LOL
