My boyfriend was already a firefighter when I met him. When we first started dating he had a couple questions for me: 1) Was I a serious Christian and 2) Could I handle dating a firefighter? I answered both of them yes, but I kinda wondered what he would have done if I answered the second question with no. So I asked him what he would have done if I said I couldn't handle dating a firefighter, his response: He would start looking for a new job!!!

I finally have another picture of us together other than the ones I have from my dorm!! I don't look so good in it, but he definitely does!!!

It's 3am and I can't sleep cause I know he's at the station right now...I worry, he knows I do and that I always will, but right now it's hard to sleep when I know he could be rushing to a call in this weather, there's ice everywhere!!! This cold in and of itself isn't too bad, what is bad is that it's been raining all day so there's thick ice on the road and idiots think they can handle driving on it!! So my guy has to go out in a huge engine on the ice and in the freezing rain to save the idiots...

He's been at the station over 24 hours now...I really wish he'd go home and stay there for a couple hours so I could get some sleep...

Lissa Good morning it's 9am here and raining.
My daughter and son-in-law are both in the police force so I know how you feel when our loved ones are on duty, but they are all doing a wonderful job yes sometimes for idiots but also a lot of time for people who really need them.
When my kids go on duty I say to myself they will be back later all safe and sound and then don't think about what they are doing you can not spend the rest of your time worrying as he will then start worrying about you and his mind will not be fully on his job. So have a hot drink and go to sleep. xxxx

Melissa, my husband is in medical school and works ungodly hours and sees death and sickness everyday...so I know how you feel. I know if it was me, I would be so depressed all the time seeing the things that my hubby sees, but like your boyfriend, this is the profession they have chosen and it takes an extra special person to do what they do. They can handle it. They are used to the long hours and to the horrors they see. Let's just be thankful for people like them that can handle these things and can do the jobs they do, because I know that I could never do it!

I know he can handle it, he's been at least a volunteer firefighter since he was 16, so he's used to seeing the death and carnage that comes along with some of those wrecks, he said the only time it really bothers him is when a kid's involved, but just cause he's used to it doesn't mean I am yet...I don't think I'll ever get used to it, luckily it doesn't happen too often...

Lissa,
Was the double fatality the wreck on I35 by Buda? I heard about that and it sounded terrible. I live in Austin and heard about it on the TV.

My brother-in-law is a firefighter in Oklahoma. Of course, I don't worry about him on a daily basis - but I do understand the stress that it creates living with it everyday.

My dad was a volunteer firefighter - we lived in a very small town and had only an occasional fire so it is not the same - but I know how it feels when they run off to fight a fire.

Good luck! You two look so great together!

Yeah, it was the wreck in Buda, I saw it on Fox News Austin, if you remember seeing a firefighter squatting next to the wreck that's my man.

I'm not planning on letting him go :D

Lissa, I'm so glad you've found yourself a good Christian man.

I worked as an EMT for 4 years, and saw my share of suffering and death during that time, too. What stands out though are those I was able to help. Saving just one makes all the ones you can't save worth it. Sometimes even when you lose a patient, you can be there for their loved ones when they so desperately need support too. It really is a very rewarding way to earn a living. I know you've got to be proud of your guy. I hope you can learn not to worry so you can simply enjoy what a great "catch" you've landed.

He knows I worry, and I think he kinda appreciates it, I told him that I'm still adjusting to the whole dating a firefighter thing. I told him yesterday (finally saw him!!! In all he spent 90 of 102 hrs at the station!! ) that I will never stop worrying about him, but I'll get better at dealing with it. Before this he had just spent 9 hours at a wildfire, then suddenly he was at the station non-stop the past few days and I was starting to panic, I'm still adjusting and he knows that, and he knows how proud I am of him.

He did tell me that the double fatality was the worst he'd ever seen, the Justice of the Peace that had to come to scene to call the two individuals hadn't even seen anything that bad, and a couple of the firefighters took one look at them and left. It wasn't pretty, they didn't even know it was two people until they started trying to get them outta the car...
