Did you know that for the past 5 years, most copy machines have a digital hard drive that retains a copy of everything copied on the machine? I read this today and checked it out. It is true. Any personal data, drivers license, social security card, personel data, medical records, legal documents, tax forms anything that has been copied on a copy machine has been recorded. What happens to this data when the machine is removed from service? What if the machine is sold on E-Bay or somewhere when it goes off lease but still has some life left in it? Sharp is the only manufacturer currently addressing this issue. They are starting to offer encrypted hard drives & features to delete items from the internal hard drive.

Makes you want to think again before going to Kinko's to copy something personal doesn't it?

Woah, that's scary! But really, what can you do about? Anywhere you work wants a copy of driver's license and social security card. Lots of places need copies of personal documents and ID in order to give their services. If you don't provide the information, you don't get the services you need...

That's not a good situation... :thumbdwn: :warning:

That is not good! Maybe we should start making our own copies at home of these personal items.

I've never heard of that but I noticed when I was working that the copy machine numbered each copy session. I kept pulling out the book trying to figure out how to bring up those copy numbers so I wouldn't have to keep scanning the same pages in all the time, but I couldn't find out how to do it.

Wow that is scary. I think I will start making copies from home. No wonder identity theft is everywhere. :( :warning:
