View Full Version : Son fractured wrist!

Janet

My son fractured his wrist this morning in P.E. class. I had to take him to the emergency room and have x-rays done. The radiologist wasn't in, but the Dr. in charge found a fracture. The radiologist will call me in the morning with a complete report and if he needs to go in and have a cast put on.

The first thing the school nurse said when she called was "Janet, Rick's been hurt."  Talk about sending me into a panic mode. I think there could have been an easier way to start off, but it's done and overwith now. He is suppose to stay home tomorrow until we find out if it is a complete break or a fracture.

A mother's job is never done...LOL I took him out for ice cream afterwards and he said he had the best mom.........that's me!!! Man, I love that kid!!!:)

Awww, your poor son.. I am a physical education teacher and cringe everytime one of my students falls or gets hurts.. Just a couple of weeks ago we had a 2nd grader pass out and had a minor seizure... Its scary but we are well trained in dealing with emergencies.. I am sending good thoughts of ice cream to your son

I've had phone calls from the school too and they can be scary. I'm glad that your son is alright. That's so sweet that he thinks that he has the "best Mom"!!!! Of course you are, right behind me!!!!!

Hope he doesn't have much pain tonite Janet. At least they found you when it happened. When Bobby broke his wrist I was out with the girls buying school shoes and of course left my cell at home. He was at the hospital for an hour before I got there and they couldn't even give him anything for pain till I got there. He still jokes with me about leaving him sittting there, I wasn't such a good Mom that time. I hope it is not a bad break and he heals quickly.

Aw Janet, so sorry to hear that:( Taylor fractured his wrist last summer 3 weeks before we were to leave for Panama City to play in a world series baseball tournament!! His was what they call a "greenstick" fracture - doctor put him in a removable cast with instructions not to remove it except for showering until she rechecked him 3 days before we left. He was in his cast a total of 5 weeks. Hope you hear great news tomorrow!!! Will be thinking of you both.

Uh oh! Are we going to have a "I'm the better mother" war? lol.

Janet, you have such a sweet son. I agree that you are an amazing mother. It's wonderful that the two of you spend so much time together with the puppies and doing chores and such. I hope he heals quickly and is not in a lot of pain. Sorry that you were so frightened. I guess that's something that just comes with motherhood...

Angie LMAO....

lol, I'm only a puppy mommy, but maybe I could be in the running, too. :) I've cleaned up poop and vomit, paid for vet bills, spent hours playing tug-o-war, I cuddle with my son every morning and night and random times in between, I've taught him to behave and do tricks, lol. Can I be #1 Mommy, too?? :D

Janet, so sorry to hear about Rick and your scare. People just don't think sometimes, but you would think a trained professional would do better. Hope Rick heals quickly and that this does not put a crimp in his summer plans.

OH, and Janet, Rick has an awesome Mom, however, about the best Mom, part, I think we are all tied for that position ladies. Except you, Angie. Sorry but as much as you mother your dog, it just does not qualify. In time, after school is finished, perhaps you can aspire to join the Best Mom club. ;)

I hope it's a simple break that's easy to fix. I've been incredibly lucky in that none of my kids has ever broken a bone. Thank GOD they took after their father rather than Me on that one. LOL

I hope he doesn't have to have a cast, or after 6 weeks he's gonna have one funky tan! ;)

I have to agree with Marilyn on this one too. Mothering a puppy isn't the same as being a mom to your child.

Janet, I hope you son is felling better soon!

Janet, im sorry about your scare, and Rick getting hurt! Hope he heals quickly, and wont be in to much pain! Poor kid, its tough to see your child in pain.
Please keep us posted on what the Dr. said. My thoughts are with you guys!

That is so funny Tink!! We were just talking about if he has to have a cast what a funky tan he is going to have...LOL

I'm still waiting on the Dr. to call back. When I called them this morning, the Dr was still making rounds at the hospital, but the nurse said she'd call me as soon as they heard anything from the radiologist.

The Tylenol is helping with the pain. He says it hurts a little when he moves his fingers. I know there are so many people needing Drs. and all, but I sure wish they would hurry and call.

As soon as we find out, you know I'll be posting.

Oh and one more thing.....I know I'm not the best Mom and probably never will be, but as long as my sweet young man thinks so....that's all that matters to me.

I'm still praying - let us know when you hear from the doctor. Thanks for the update thus far! I'm glad to hear that tylenol is helping!

I called the Dr first thing this morning and since he hadn't gotten back with me I called them. It's after 2 PM and he hadn't even listened to his calls yet. I'm suppose to call back after my bus route. I just don't get the medical profession around here. I know they are busy, but can't someone else in the office listen and let him know about the important ones? If my son's wrist is completely broke, he'll probably have to wait until Monday now to have a cast on it. I'm not a happy camper at this moment ladies!!

Goodness! I wouldn't be either! I got a cast the same day I broke my arm, and braces for both times I broke my ankle the day after. Is there anyway you can get him in to see a doctor today?

AngieDoogles

Yikes, I wouldn't be happy with that either Janet. I really hope you are able to get it taken care of asap. Maybe they will call you back soon...

Janet, it sounds like they simply don't communicate very well with their patients which stinks.

If Ricks wrist is broken, they would want to let all the swelling go down before putting a plaster cast on it. This way it will be a better, more effective fit. He should have an adjustable splint on it until that time. As long as the wrist is immobilized by a splint it should be fine to wait until Monday, if need be, but they certainly should have told you that!

okay ladies, I just talked with the Dr. It is now 10 after 4 PM. He has broken a bone in his hand and can not go to the orthopedic Dr. until Mon. or Tues., can you believe that? His hand and wrist is immobilized, but the idea of waiting!!! So now he'll have to go to school on Monday and they'll call first thing to let me know when I can get him in. They are going to get an earful by the time it's all said and done. I think this is ridiculous!!

Thanks Tink, I didn't think about the swelling needing to go down, but yes..they should have told me what to expect. I guess if I would have went to a city south of ours, they put casts on in the ER. Heaven help the accident victims. From now on, we will not be going to the hospital in our city. Not worth it to me!!

I agree. Maybe the other hospital will handle this in a more appropriate manner. I hope that your son is feeling better and the medication is still working.

I took him to the ER yesterday. Our hospital doesn't do casts. I just can't believe that. We will wait until Monday. Maybe by then I'll calm down a little bit and they won't have to haul me off.....LOL

They better watch out! They probably don't want to see you upset when your son is hurt...

I think that's a mom thing. My mother is very soft-spoken and calm, but mess with her children and she'll tell you how it is. lol.

I've heard of waiting several days before putting a cast on. It's for the swelling, like Tink said. As long as his wrist is immobilized he should be fine until they can get the cast on. It will give Rick a few more days to be waited on by Mom!!!!

You're so right...lol He got out of mowing the yard this weekend...Dad is doing it, but once the cast is on, he should be able to use the rider just fine. LOL he is so thrilled......not!

I guess that he'd better enjoy being waited on because it sounds like it's going to come to an end!!! (Until he looks at Mom with little sad eyes!!)

Dear Janet,

I just came onto 4WT and am so sorry for your son! You also - it sounds like they're not up to speed on patient care, nor on how to tell a parent that their child has been hurt.

I hope he's not in pain and that it heals real soon so that he can fully enjoy the summer. It does sound like the two of you are getting some quality time together
though!

Happy Mother's Day, and prayers are coming,

Janet

Here it is Monday and he finally got a cast on it. It happened Thursday morning. He broke what is called the scaphoid bone in his wrist. It's located at the bottom of the thumb in the wrist. I'm posting a link and it is the letter "A".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Carpus.png

He'll get the cast off the 26th of June. So much for finding a summer job. They'll most all be taken and then he'd only be able to work a month and a half if that. He is wanting a job so bad...he loves making his own money.

Tink

Janet, I worked as a nurses aide with a cast on my wrist. I bet there are many jobs he could do too if he wants to badly enough.

I'm glad he got his cast so hopefully you can relax a bit. LOL

I'm glad he was finally able to get his cast! That must make both of you feel so much better!!

I'm sorry that he is down about a summer job, but as Tink said, there are probably still lots of jobs he could do even with a cast. Maybe you and he can spend a day going job hunting. :)

He's going to try to find something. He loves making money and loves spending mine....LOLOL I think he is planning on going Saturday morning to a few places. He knows it will take some time, but is hoping to have something lined up by the time school it out. 8 1/2 more days!!!!
