Here's one you can do at a party or just for fun. Print out the poem in whatever colors the kids will like and with large enough type so it fits on the side of a paper bag. You can use brown bags or get white - whatever's fun. Give the kids glue and markers, macaroni or bits of colored string and yarn to use to decorate the bags. Let them go to it! Make sugar cookies with the kids to put in the bags as well as healthy treats or sandwiches if you are doing lunch with them. Well - you all know what I mean.

My Paper Bag

In my paper bag I have─
a cookie of sugar and dreams
that sparkles and gleams,
with crystals so bright
and a taste of delight.

On my paper bag I have─
a drawing of a cloud,
a dog barking so loud,
a rainbow from a shower,
a blooming spring flower.

With my paper bag─
I can carry my lunch,
green grapes in a bunch,
a ball of knotted string,
just about anything!

I made it up for the tea shop my friend had, for a kid's activity at holidays. Something to keep them busy and happy while waiting for tea and sandwiches :) .

This is a great idea. I will have to use this with our "Little" from Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

Thanks much!

Wow, I didn't know you did Big Brother/Big Sisters Sheryl! Brendon and I used to mentor for a local organization that helps children who have at least one parent incarcerated. It was such a rewarding experience. We had to stop when we got different jobs over the summer and then school got busy so we haven't done it in a while, but it was so much fun when we were able to!

We got matched this past April. As you say, it's heartwarming.

LOL - sorry I didn't elaborate more earlier...I didn't realize the time when I replied and I had to head out the door for an appt. Had to cut it short, LOL Ooops. :o

Yes, we were matched with our Little Kimberlee last April. She's 9 and is a sweet girl. We've done activities from fishing, river play, shopping, eating out, and I think our favorite is going to the movies. Our next play day I was already planning on a craft day to make pine cone bird feeders. But depending on the weather I might change it to the poem paperbag. :D

Thanks again for the idea! :)

That's so much fun - the bird feeders. We had a sturdy wire off the back window we hung just for the pinecones so we could watch them fly in and nibble, and draw pictures or use a camera, and identify them in our bird books.
