For days, and days we have been having temps way below zero.
Lastnight they announced on the news that the natural canals & waters are frozen up, thick enough for the public to go ice skate on them, this hasnt happened for years.

I can't imagine how it must feel at those tempertures. We had a little frost Monday morning, but are only wearing jackets in the mornings. In the afternoon, it warms up. Quite a difference from where you are. Wow!!!

The crazy ice fishermen are out here as soon as the ice will hold them. That scares me... it's not easy to get someone back up should they fall through. I know many love it though!

I hope you enjoy!

Too right, a lot of accidents have happened to people, specially kids falling through the ice when it's still too thin to hold. They get fined if caught on ice before the "announcement"
Schools help kids take swimming lessons, if the parents cant afford to send them for private lessons, because there is so much water around here, it's adviced they get at least their A diploma. We took our son till he passed for hes A - B - C diploma's, it teaches them how to swim under ice, and how to get themselves out from underneath it.
I'm glad we did that, coz he could also save lives this way.

Mandy, that's a wonderful idea. I'm so glad you were able to give your child that training.

I've never heard of teaching a child to swim under the ice! That's a really great idea since you have so much water around you and I'm sure that it saves a lot of lives.

My family loves for the ponds to get froze over enough that they can ice skate. We pick up ice skates at garage sales and keep them in a big box then the kids all get out skates to fit them and the rest we leave for others to use when they come to skate with us. Once in a while we get enough ice on the roads and streets that they can skate on them. We have a lot of people who come out and skate with us. (I should say, it's actually my family who goes. I keep the hot cocoa ready for when they get home!!! Cold is NOT my thing!!) Some winters it doesn't get cold enough but usually we have a few days.

I'm sorry that it's so cold there, Mandy. Make sure that you're well bundled when you go out!!!! And have fun!!!!

I used to LOVE ice skating as a kid. It was never beautiful like on a frozen pond outdoors or canals and such though. Just a indoor skake rink sorta thing.

We have a place here now (skate rink) and it's free. I have thought a few times about bringing our Little there for a few hours of fun. But then I remember that I probably couldn't skate if I tried and would probably break my leg, LOL. So...I will pass on the skate date. Worse yet, our Little would break her leg and Id never get over the guilt.

I look forward to seeing the pics Mandy. :p I bet it's gorgeous.

Oh I just LOVE iceskating!!! I think Brendon is going to take me sometime soon. :) (Our ice ring closes mid-January.) I have always wanted to go with him, but he's afraid because he was born with a club foot and doesn't think he would be able to. I think he could if he'd just try. He finally agreed to go so now I'm just waiting for it to happen. I'm SO excited!!

Are you going to go skate Mandy??

Angie, i love skating, i'll have to get myself a new pair though. As a kid i could figure skate, a little. We use to practice weekly in the ring, but thats a LONG time ago. In summer it's fun to go inline skating, none of my friends fancy going, but my son is kind enough to go with hes mom at times LOL

I always dreamed of being a figure skater. I have the balance and body type for it, and I just loved watching it on TV, but we wouldn't have been able to afford or find a trainer around here, so I never did it. Ballet was the closest I got. lol. So what was the most difficult technique you learned?? I hope you get to go soon. It's just so much fun!

Angie, it's a pity you never got to learn it, it's quite fun. The most difficult thing to do for me was the twirl, i remember that "dizzy" feeling, specially in the beginning, ive "ploncked" on my backside lots and lots of times LOL
If i had a daughter, i would definatly have encouraged her to pick a skating sport.
You get that "free" feeling :)
My brother had those hockey skates for speed skating, ive never tried that, but wooooo that must be fun.
A friend of mine went with us one day, she fell, and another skater rode over her hand, that was not a pretty sight.

Have fun skating Mandy! I can't wait to see pictures.

When I was a kid, we used to go to Prospect Park in Brooklyn. They had a really nice skating rink. I'll never forget how beautiful it was at twilight. The ice had a beautiful blue look at that hour.
