When I was a teenager I wanted to learn to play the guitar so badly. My family is very very musical. When I was 10 I taught myself to read notes and play my grandma's piano (she used to play her piano while my grandpa played his fiddle and I'd sit there mesmerized). Then when I was 14 I got my first drum set (my dad also played drums as a teen). When I was 17, at Christmas, all of the presents had been opened when my parents left the room and came back with a guitar case with a big bow on it. A brand new guitar. I started learning a bit but didn't really get into chords or anything, just some simple songs. Then my boyfriend of 3 years dumped me and I quit doing EVERYTHING!
So my guitar has been sitting around for about 5 years really not getting any use. During college I had a bunch of friends who played guitar, and we always made deals that I'd help them out studying or doing homework, if they'd teach me guitar. Well, I did a lot of helping, but never learned guitar.
This year for Christmas, both Kyle and my parents got me gift certificates from the same place for lessons. I finally made the call and I have my first lesson on Monday at 6 :) I am SO excited about it!

I need to get motivated to learn my guitar too. I've had it for 10 years & just never really learned. I can play a few cords, but it was harder then I thought it'd be & I never really put in the time to learn. Maybe once I get my other issues resolved I'll spend the rest of my bonus on guitar lessons.

My daughter has taken a few lessons for guitar and she can play a little. She took a break from it and now I think that she's about ready to go back. My Dad used to play the guitar.

You're young and I bet that you pick it up pretty easily. Just like anything else you have to practice.

Music is wonderful! I took piano lessons when I was younger and then went on to learn to play some by ear. I then wanted to play the guitar and took lessons for awhile, but my teacher moved and I didn't persue it further. I still get it out once in awhile and play some chords. Wish I would have accomplished both, the guitar and piano.

Go for it Lindsey. It was one of my biggest regrets not to continue with lessons.

....... It was one of my biggest regrets not to continue with lessons.

Why don't you find someone to continue with your lessons? I have a friend that's just a few years younger than me and about 5 years ago she took lessons and now she's playing at church. You'll find that you pick it up pretty quickly, I bet. Go for it!!!!!!

I just don't know if I have the time or the want. I want to get stuff out of this house not bring anything (like a piano) in...LOL. I really just don't have the interest to do what it takes anymore. I wish I would have kept it up then. Now it just seems like too much work.

Nobody hardly has a piano anymore. They all buy one of those electronic keyboards and then you can just put it in a closet or under the bed. They don't take up much room and you can buy them pretty reasonable.

Lindsey, wishing you the best!!!!!! with your lessons. I played piano and guitar when I was younger. It was like a lot of things, when I went away to college, I found so much to do that I quit playing both. Sold the piano many years ago.

Our daughter Melissa wanted a guitar, (she played trumpet in the high school band) so we bought her one a couple of years ago and it's under her bed here at home. She's away at college. I've thougth of getting it out and strumming a bit, but my finger tips will hurt, and I'd have to get off this computer. :o

Hope things work out for you. Playing can be very enjoyable and relaxing.

Janet, you are never too old to learn. In fact, learning improves your brain fruction and may help ward off the effects of aging. You need to do it for your health!!!

Lindsey, I think you should go for it and not stop like I did. I love listening to someone play the piano or the guitar. So relaxing. Now once you learn a song, you need to tape it for us to hear.

I want to take singing lessons. I have no ear for music, but I'd love to just be able to sing on key. When I was teaching, I would walk through the halls singing - it's just such a nice thing to do. (Not too loud of course)

Haley, I don't have this, wish I'd seen your thread earlier, I was with a group of ladies earlier this evening who are into things like this, they might have.

When is Micah's b-day?

:) Well the lesson went well. My teacher told me that I'm lucky I understand the notes because half the people he sees just can't wrap their heads around reading guitar notes. He gave me some simple exercises to practice, which I did tonight, and I've improved already :) He did tell me I need new strings though, so I should get that done before next Monday's lesson.
I really love it so far!

I played guitar growing up. I regret not keeping it up, but what I enjoyed was playing with my friends. After I married and moved away I never had friends who played so I quit. I am sure you will love it. Once you master an instrument all the others come far easier to you, IMO you will be surprised I think by what is actually familiar to you from playing the piano!
good luck and enjoy!

way cool!! keep it up. have you had the lesson yet?

i have had a guitar for 30 years. i started at 18, played about a year the only off and on, mostly off.
i picked it back up last spring, and have been taking lessons since. it is muy wonderful. i have an acoustic.
i went to a college sale where they sell off instruments from the music program and i went just to look~ came away with one with a pickup and a built in tuner.
i really want to get a classical one next since that's what i started with.
we had a recital in november!!

it'll get better! sometimes practicing in just 10-15 minute session a couple times per day works better till the callouses build up.

:) thanks! I've gotta take my guitar in to get the strings changed tomorrow I think so I won't be practising for the next couple of days (well I could Saturday... BUT I'd rather go snowboarding!)
