View Full Version : Fiona Sunshine II died today!
I must be the worst bird owner in the world! I took the cover of their cage this morning and they were both fine. Skye is molting, so she's all puffed up. I looked over at the cage and didn't see FS. Sure enough, she was gone. I took her out and went right over to the pet store to buy another one, who I'm not naming FSIII!
She's a beautiful deep violet and looks so tiny next to Skye. I hope they both live a long time! I don't know what happened to both Fionas. i'm going to have to do some research about keeping your parakeets alive.
I still miss FSI! Now I'll miss them both. That's what happens with such tiny, delicate pets I guess.
Any advice?

So sorry about FSII. I'm no help with birds. The only one we had, a cockateal (sp?), died. We would put her cage on the back porch in the evenings because she would get noisy and bother hubby. One night we forgot to bring her in and a cat or something pulled on of her wings off. It was horrible. We took her to the vet the next moring, and he patched her up, but she went into shock or something and died.

Don't know much about birds at all. Sorry you lost another one. Do you think Skye has anything to do with it? Can birds look guilty?

I just wonder if they were fighting. The same thing happened with my MIL's parakeets. She put 2 in the same cage and they were fine for a while and then one just died. I have had a parakeet by himself for 3 years and he goes just nuts when he sees or is able to get near my daughter's female cockatiel. He will make her regurgitate her food so he can eat. We had to seperate them because he is so crazy. To bad you don't live closer because you could take mine.I hope you ahve better luck this time.

So sorry to hear about this!!
I have finches and so far so good. Very easy to care for.
I was wondering.. by chance is cage near air conditioner? They cannot toterate a cold draft. When you said the other one is molting and puffed up I thought maybe a draft? They puff up when cold. Mine have never puffed up because of molting. They just drop feathers.
Good luck with the new addition. She sounds beautiful!

There is an a/c in the room. Should I move them, or cover the cage?
How are the finches songs? I'm going to get a canary when I move. I already have another cage.

We usually keep the house bewteen 70 and 73 and ours do ok. As long as they aren't in the direct path of the cool air they should be ok. When the cockatiel sleeps he will puff himself up and the room he stays in is slightly warmer. I hope you have better luck with your new one.
I moved them to a spot in the foyer that's nice and warm. Skye looks unpuffed, but I know they like when we're all in the living room.
When I move, I'll set them up so they can be with us and still be warm.
Thanks! You may have saved their lives! I didn't know about the a/c.

I'm so sorry Judy! I'm glad you've decided to change names with the new one lol. I had Chester the goldfish and he died within a couple months. Then I got Chester II the goldfish and he died within a month. Then I got Chester III the hamster and he was the meanest, angriest hamster I've ever seen. He also would climb to the top of his cage and drop himself headfirst into his foodbowl. I have a feeling poor Chester III had some mental issues, and after a few months he stopped eating and also died =/ My next pet was Layla the yorkie and I am very glad I didn't name her Chester! :D

So sorry.
I have parrots and know that you can't spray anything that has fumes in it, bug spray, air freshners, even oven cleaner, and also the draft.
I sprayed febreeze, but not near them. I'm not a sprayer, but thanks for the advice. Parrots are so funny! They remind me of little old sailors.
Can you post some parrot pictures?
Now I need a name. Ideas? I'll post a picture later.

I will have to scan them. They are so funny, Cleo is the Macaw and she calls us by name and can talk just like us. I had a cookatoo, she drove me nuts. She screemed all day if I didn't give her my full attention. One day, she says,
shut the FUUUUUU up, RIght NOW. I am sure that I said that to her, she was a bad girl.

Thank goodness parakeets don't pick up speech fast at all!
A friend of mine found a parrot (I don't remember the details). She posted signs
around the neighborhood, and this guy comes by to claim "his" parrot. My friend saw that the parrot had no reaction at all to this man, so she told him she would have to wait and see if anyone else claimed him and could prove it, and that she would get back to him.
A few days later, a woman called and when she came over, the parrot immediately said "Hellloooo Mama!!!" She went home with her parrot.

Parrots are so smart, did you see the one in China that escaped and the police caught him, took him to the station and it never said a word. They called a Vet to come in and check him out and he said
his owners name and full address? He was returned to his owner.
My Macaw says over 350 sentences. My favoite is when you give her a treat and her eyes dialate and she says, "Is it good?, do you like it?" She knows us by name, so many things, they are great buddies except for the screaming.
How cute! Mine just chirp, but I love the sound. It sounds like they're singing their joy of just being alive.
