My computer crashed on Sat while I was trying to back up all the pics (ironic eh?) They couldn't recover anything. Nothing. I am so crushed. I've been convincing myself all week it'll be okay if they couldn't recover the pics, but I really thought they could.
When I went to pick up the computer he handed it over and I said could you recover anything? And they guy goes "I'm not sure, but they've already sent your hard drive to Apple so it's gone now anyways". I asked him to check if they could have possibly saved anything, but he wasn't sure so I asked him to check in the back. He came back out and said no, but kept reminding me 'they'd already sent my old hard drive away'. I kinda felt like they could have done more, but maybe not. Then he said "this is why we stress back up methods so much". I was thinking, 'thanks jerk, this is a great time to lecture me', but I said, "actually I was doing that while it crashed".
Ahhhh...deep breaths...I know it's not the end of the world, just really makes me sad.

I totally know how it feels! I had just emptied all of my pictures from my camera onto my laptop when it crashed last year. After about a week I tried turning it on and it was a miracle, it actually started! But it was midnight and I was so tired I went to bed, I just decided I wouldn't turn the computer off and in the morning I would burn my pictures to cds. Woke up and the computer was dead, it never started again, and absolutely nothing could be recovered :( So I only have about 10 baby pictures of Layla now!

I would be so upset if I lost all my pictures. As soon as I get them off my camera, I put them on photobucket. Then as time allows, I put them on CD's.
Only thing is...even backing them to CD's isnt' fool proof. I have one CD I have to keep working with to see the pictures. I did make a copy of it, but you make CD's as a back up and then you have to back up the CD's too....lol

I would ask for the hard drive back. You could always take it to a local computer shop. My computer crashed once but my husband was able to take the hard drive and hook it up to his computer using what he called and external hard drive. After that we decided to back up everything. We had been putting it off for so long. I am so sorry you lost your pictures. I would be upset too.(hugs)

I feel your pain! Our computer crashed last year. I lost pictures, recipes, and all of my son's Eagle Project work. AAAARRRRGGGHHH! I had a few pics on photobucket, but lost many that are irreplaceable. I learned my lesson about backing things up, that's for sure!

I've had computers crash on me several times and my husband has a friend that's always been able to save what ever we've wanted off of it. I would be really upset because I bet you could have saved your pictures if you'd have found the right computer guy. It doesn't sound like they even try. You might want to see if you can get it back to look for another tech!
I send all of my pictures on to York Photo so I don't have to worry about losing what I have on my computer. I can order my pictures from them and have been very happy with the price and the service.

I'm with Janet, and put everything on Photobucket.
How sad to lose it all!

Diana, that York Photo looks pretty good. I can use the Kodak website, but had already had the photobucket and so far haven't had a reason to change. I did put it in my favorites though, just in case.

This is one of the reasons I still mostly use my old trusty Canon AE1 35mm. Digital can be wonderful, I have one too, but for lasting photo's I use my Canon.
There are times I use both for the same picture!
In fact, I just dropped off two rolls of film at K-Mart to be developed. They now offer a package of 1 set of color, along with 1 set of black and white. I recently bought a roll of black and white because on one wall of my dining room I have nothing but black and white photo's of my family in many different years gone past.
So I want to add a few black and white pictures of my flowers to adjoining wall. I am so excited to see the pictures I took in both black and white and color! Black and white really changes the effect of the picture.
Tomorrow I am going kayaking with friends, bought a disposable camera to take with me and hopefully get some good pictures. Never want to take a good camera on the river, never know what happens! I am a tree magnet and have been know to get hung up on fallen branches. I know sooner or later I will tip it over, don't want to lose a good camera to the river.
I am so sorry you lost your pictures.
I have so many photo albums. I have always said if you want to know about me, look at my pictures. It tells my life story!
I would be devastated to lose my pictures.

The computer was only 10 months old. We had our old computer crash last August. Luckily someone recovered most of the pics.
They didn't even ask me what I wanted to do with my hard drive. I'm so very upset. I'm going to get my boyfriend to call them. The hard drive that they just sent away is mine. I think you are right that they didn't try. They acted kinda surprised when I asked for my files.
I always said that if my house caught on fire the only thing I would want to grab on the way out is pictures. They mean everything to me. I'm so devastated. I'm angry too...Gosh I've had a horrible weekend, and today was just crappy...

I have some pics on Kodak, and some on Facebook, but those are only a fraction of the pics I had. I've been going over today all the digital albums I lost and keep remembering more. It's so sad...
Why did he send out your hard drive anyway? Definitely get it back, even if it takes some doing. It's really pretty hard to conceive that your pix aren't somewhere in there.
You need to find a true computer geek, like mine. I've gone through a couple of crashes, a new motherboard, and haven't lost anything.
Here's a very good back up gadget that I'm considering.

Good luck! You can retrieve them.

Thanks for everyone's responses.
So I sent my BF in the Mac store today to be the tough guy and get things taken care of. They tried to give him the run around, and tried every tactic to get him to give up but he was persistent. Then they told him that the person who worked on the computer was supposed to ask me if I wanted a file recovery. Well no one EVER called me, or asked me anything.
Now they say they've sent the hard drive off, and there is no way we are getting it back. I can tell you, I'm soo mad, my blood is boiling, this wasn't our fault, and I feel so duped. I feel like they could get it back if they wanted to, sure they may have to bust ass to hunt it down, but should I suffer cause of their screw up? I don't know what I'm going to do, but we were told they manager will call us. Should I call back everyday? I don't want to take no for an answer. What do ya'll suggest?
Dear TB,
OH NO!!! If this was me, I would be calling their corporate headquarters and finding somebody there to deal with customer service. If you don't get satisfaction, which is not really likely, you might mention a lawyer. They did not ask you if you want recovery.
I would definitely call them every single day, and call the place where they sent it.
I would track it down, and call the supervisor of that department, every day.
Where is it? Seriously, if it's only a few hours drive away, and you really want your pix, it might pay to drive over and get it back.
I'm relentless! But, I usually get what I want. Most of the people you will speak to could care less. Don't let it bother you. Keep your eye on the prize - your pictures.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. You really want your pictures. I hope you get them back.
Judy
That website I posted was not the one. Here it is. (I hope)

That really sucks, I was just saying how attached I am to my pictures in another thread..
It happened to me once a few years back, that is why I have to agree with Tink on photobucket ;) I make myself upload and edit them as soon as the day is over, then I save them in my photobucket. Videos go both places, youtube and photobucket!
