View Full Version : My Computer Doesn't Feel Well

I think I'm going to have to take my computer in to the computer doctor. It is running so slow and it has for a little while now. Some things just are not running as they should. I did a disk cleanup and was then going to do a defragment, but it's gone. I don't know what happened to it...I used it last month, but it's gone. Did a search and it's no where to be found. It's also telling me that my virtual memory is low and that it is creating more for me. Don't know what that's about.
I just can't be without my computer....I can be without a lot of things and some people, but just not my computer. I'm going to call the computer doctor tomorrow to see if I can get it in, then I'll just have to use Ricky's laptop till mine is fixed.
I just hope they can fix whatever is wrong and that it doesn't take too long.
I thought of doing a system restore, but I've never done it. Would it put it back to how it was when I bought it? If that's what happens I don't really want to go through all the XP service packs again and all the other type updates. Hopefully all will be fine and I'm getting anxious over nothing.
I would love to have a new computer...laptop, but don't want particularly want to deal with Vista. I know....just wait and see if mine can be fixed.

I would DIE if my computer were sick!!! My internet is acting up - it flits off and on. Luckily it only stays off a minute or two when it goes off. I think I need a new internet/phone box. The TV is not affected and it all comes in through the same cable. Only the internet and phone go off intermittantly - and they both feed through the same box - so it has to be the box. I've unplugged the box to reset it - didn't help, so I think I need a new one!
I could not do without my computer either.. I hope Janet that yours is fixed real soon...

Sure hope it's something really simple!! Can't live without a computer. The folks at work won't get on theirs at night because they spend so much time on them during the day, but I'm not like that. Have to be connected!!! Maybe that's why I have carpal tunned, and they don't.

I'm with you Marilyn, my computer is by my TV. When I finally sit down in the evening, I HAVE to be on the computer - even if I'm watching TV, I have to be checking my fave sites!

Hope it gets straightened out really soon! Also, if you have to buy a new one, you can always get a mac...they are great (and I'm not a 'mac' person)

Janet,
Our computer has a thing called goback that you can restore it back to when ever like the day before or the week before.

I knew that you were having problems with your computer because it's one of the things that we talked about when I was there. Hopefully the DR. won't have it for very long and you'll be up and running on your own computer again. Thank goodness that you can use Ricky's laptop or you'd go through withdrawals!!!!! LOL

Hope the computer gets a good prognosis and you aren't without it for long!

I haven't taken it in yet. I keep thinking I should let it get worse first. Isn't that dumb? We have a bond and it just drives me crazy thinking I will be without it even though there are two other computers here.
I have thought about a Mac, I've heard they are great and don't get viruses like Windows. Maybe I should start researching them now, just in case.
It doesn't matter when it comes to a computer though if we can afford it. If I have to get a new one....it will be charged. I will not be without my OWN computer..lol.

Emily and Dustin both have an Apple that they had to get for College.
They love them. They say they are alot easier than Windows....But they weren't cheap either. But then again they may be cheaper right now. I don't know have not priced any. Good luck with that.

I have always had Macs and I work exclusively on Mac's at work. They are extremely reliable and bug free - VIRUS free too. We are all going together and getting my granddaughter a Mac for Christmas. She's had a PC and has nothing but trouble with viruses and other problems. She uses a Mac at school and loves it.
I had my first Mac in 1989  and it ran for 8 years!!! Then I got a PC because my hubby needed to learn how to use one for his work. O.M.G. I hated that thing with a passion and had to have my computer-savvey son-in-law work on it almost weekly. I couldn't wait to throw that thing out!
I then got a mac laptop and it is 4 1/2 years old without nary a problem. It needs the operating system upgraded and I'll be doing that soon and getting a new battery - but I expect it to last another 4 years!
My hubby got me a desktop Mac year before last for Christmas and I soooooo love this machine!!!
Yes, Macs are more expensive, but way worth it in my opinion!!!

I wouldn't even know what to look for in a Mac. They do sound so much better. I think I'll start checking them out.

Go to the Apple store at apple.com There are basic packages that don't vary much. You can also buy reconditioned Macs that I have heard are just as good as new.

Two of my daughter's use a Mac at school and they just love them! They have used the other kind here at home but they prefer the Macs. I think that it takes a while to get used to them but once you do you'll love them. I didn't go with a Mac when I got a new one because it's so hard to teach an old dog new tricks!!!!!

How is the computer feeling today? They should have emergency rooms for our computers. Don't use System Restore - it just goes back to before you put in a new program, or something that messed it up. It sounds like an internal illness.
I bought a refurbished back-up laptop a few weeks ago. I haven't done much with it yet. It's older than mine, but Steve got it online. I'm going to back up this computer soon because it's getting to have several problems. You should back up your files on a flash drive, disks, or an external memory just in case yours does crash.
I would love to play with Mac, but I also believe they can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Janet, you should try going to an Apple store where you can really check them out and see all the different models. There should be one in Indianapolis, I would think. I would love to have one of the new laptops that fit in a manilla envelop, but they are soooo expensive.
I used Macs years ago, but my work switched to PC's and PC's are so much less expensive. You might try looking at refurbished though. Sometimes I think it would be worth it to pay more and have fewer headaches.
Hope all works out very soon!!

I still haven't taken it in yet. I need to stay off the forums long enough to get some things copied to disk. That ought to be fun.....NOT!!! I just hate the thought of taking it away from the only home it's ever known for a few days....LOLOL.
I need to finish reading here and check another and then start copying things to disk...it's got to be done.

Send it with a blankie, and maybe something that has your smell on it!
Good luck with the back up plan. How boring is it????

I heard something on CNN radio about a registry cleanup website that fixes all the little problems that develop in your programming from use. It says it will make your computer run like it did when you got it out of the box. If I hear the ad again, I'll try to remember the website and let you know.

I did get my Word and Works files on a disk so if this thing crashes, I'll at least have them. Not sure what else I would want to save. Most pics are on disks already so hopefully that part is done.
Maybe I can google the website Marilyn, thanks.

I copy my pictures off to those memory sticks and being OCD, I have about 4 of the same thing, worried that they'll not work.

Can I (or anyone) just copy let's say the MS Word program on the computer and all the files will go with it? I didn't do it that way. I copied each individual folder I made, such as Anniversaries and Birthdays...etc. I didn't know if there was an easier way to do it or not. I've already copied my folders in Word, but I was just wondering....LOL...fine time to ask now huh?...LOL
