wanted to give everyone an update on Micah, he is still sick, he still has one ear infection in his left ear, they put him on stronger antibiotic again for 10 more days, can't understand why one ear cleared up and the other didn't.
he has a bad cough, runny nose, and his two year old molars are cominig in, one is in and the other three are pretty close. mild fever yesterday 100.1. going back to the doctor's again this Friday, to check on his ear infection and i'm praying he doesn't have a respirtory infection now. ( i'll be off work Friday since they cut my hours so i'll be taking him).
Just so sick of everything, was just laying in bed last night in tears... it has to get better...

Oh, sorry you're so sad Haley. It always gets better one way or the other. Micah's ear infection is probably because he's cutting teeth.

Love ya,

Janet

Things always seem worse when the kids are sick Haley. You can't be any good for him if you don't take care of yourself.

I was just wondering if there is something your Dr. can suggest to boost his immune system...seems like everytime ya turn around this poor little guy isn't feeling good. I think I would ask and see if there is something that can help him...do you get him flu shots?

So sorry little Micah is sick - it is so hard when they are little. He will get better and these infections will likely help build his little immune system. It's so hard when they have to go through all these illnesses. I have a two year old granddaughter who is not in day care, but every time they take her to the church nursery, she gets sick. Or when they take her to play in those inflatable playlands in the mall, she gets sick. I think they just have to work their way through all the bugs in the enviornment - but it is so hard! :(

Sorry to hear about little Micah not feeling better.. Like the rest said this is part of childhood , may I make a suggestion, I had a friend whose child would have reoccurring ear infections and they had ear tubes put in and the problem ended.. It has been many years ago, ask your dr. see what he says. If they continue to reoccur. Just a suggestion

My son as a little boy suffered with his tonsils he was on antibodics every 10 days for strep throat till finally I had them removed and he was never sick after that.

Give him a kiss from me, poor little guy. You take care don't get run down for you will be no help if you get sick.

thanks everyone, Janet i am scared to get him a flu shot, it makes everyone in my family sick to death, almost killed my cousin, she had a bad reaction to it ended up in the hospital over a flu shot... so i really don't want to take that chance now..
as for the ears, my husband had very bad ear infections when he was a child and he also had tubes so i hope Micah don't follow in his foot steps.. he's going back to the doctors friday hopefully the doctor has good news for me, this is going on three weeks this kids been sick, and not eating good, he's going to waste away to nothing....

I sure hope he gets to feeling better soon Haley. I know it is hard for him, but also hard for you. I was so blessed that Ricky was never sick as a child. I mean I think he's only vomited no more than 5 times his whole life and never had an ear infection.

GAYLE.......I was just curious and thought you may know. I have heard this and wonder if it is true.

I was told that when you are feeding the babies their bottles or nursing, that you need to sit them up as much as possible and to never give a bottle to a baby laying down. That the milk/formula can somehow affect their ears. Is this true?

I made sure when Ricky was a baby to sit him up as much as possible and while other kids his age were getting ear infections, Ricky has never had one.

Is there any truth to that or were Ricky and I just one of the lucky ones?

HALEY
11-19-2008, 07:13 AM
Janet they told us that in birthing classes, cause the milk could run down the babies check into the ear, and that can cause ear infections. they also told us not to put him in bed with a bottle cause of this.. there might be other reason that Gayle could answer,,

Haley, I'm sorry that Micah is still having his ear infection. I think that it probably has to do with his teeth coming in too. They always seem like they have a cold when their teeth come in and ear infections go along with colds. Give Micah a hug from me.

Thanks Diana, i don't know what to do, seems like the antibiotics aren't working so well, then they put him on stronger ones, and he is still pulling those ears. I feel so bad for him, his nose is running so bad. and Harley scratched his face last night to boot, and his nose is so red and sore, i'm going to put some aquaphor on it after his bath tonight, probably from wipping it so much lately.

Not good Diana, he has fluid build up in both ears have to take him back in a couple of weeks for them to decide if he needs tubes in his ears... i'm flipping out about all this.... just depressing.

Micah will be fine. Just listen to his doctor. You're the Mom and you can't just "flip" out. Take a deep breath and be thankful that it's only an earache. Just think of all the things that other mothers are dealing with with children that are very, very sick. You CAN handle an earache and what it takes to put the tubes in. Micah's going to be just fine and back to healthy in no time. We've all dealt with things like this with our own children.

Don't worry about the tubes in the ears, not a big deal today.

My brother had tubes put in when he was a kid also. That was 30 years ago. Im sure its easier now, but it was easy back then too! :) I just hope Micah gets better now and the tubes help prevent him from getting this bad of an ear infection again. Poor baby!

Donna its not so much the tubes, i don't like the idea of them putting him under, there are alot of risk for a child to be put under, under the age of 2 years old that i wasn't aware of...

Saying a prayer for you and your son.

Please don't worry about the procedure to put the ear tubes in, I know many children who have had this done with no problems.

Focus on the help it will give him. It really will help.

Poor baby, I'm sorry to hear he's having trouble with ear infections. My son had trouble too (he's 22 now). He got one ear infection after another, and I took him to an ENT. He told me he needed to have his tonsils out and have tubes put in his ears. When I started to ask questions, he said he didn't have time for questions, he was running behind. So, I got a second opinion. The second ENT put him on antibiotics for 10 days, and my son's ear infection cleared up. Then, he took his tonsils out, but no tubes. He was 3 at the time, and he did very well with the surgery. Had surgery in the morning, and went home that evening. He never had another ear infection after that.:)

If you're concerned about the tubes, try a second opinion. But, these days they aren't a big deal. They have improved over the years.

Thanks everyone, i might move his apt up, he is still messing with his left ear, it's still bugging him. but with Mike out of town its hard to take him all the way to wash. its about a 45 min drive from my house... but i can always take my mom with me...

I know it is scary but the time spent under is so short.
He could lose his hearing. My son had it done at 18 months old, the first time.
When he turned 6, the teacher said he was retarded, took him back to the Doctor and he had lost quite a bit of his hearig, they put tubes in again and he was fine.
Good Luck, more prayers for you.

Thanks Donna, i still don't know why the doctor wants me to wait til dec 26 th,, he only told me to see if the fluid dries up in his ear on its own, but why so long, i think i'm going to move his apt up... :( he is scratching the hell out of that one ear..

donna1990
12-01-2008, 10:40 AM
I don't understand why he is delaying this, BUT, my friend went through this and talked to a friend of his that worked for the Doctor and they got him right in. I say, "it is who you know". Maybe you should get a second opinion or tell this Doctor you will be looking for another one.
I am not happy with our medical professionals at all. I have been so upset these last six months because the appointment wait time has been 2 to 4 hours. Guess we don't have enough Doctors.
Poor baby, is he on any medication?

HALEY
12-01-2008, 11:08 AM
He was on two anti biotics, the first ones weren't strong enough only cleared up one ear infection and the second set cleared both up, there is just a fluid build up in both ears now... i want to move his apt up, but Mike is out of town and took that friday off so he can go.
But Micah is scratching that left ear really bad, i just might have to move it up and Mike will just have to come home early one week....

if he gets any worse im just going to take him the the ER....

And to add more about my emotional well being, when Cory had his tonsils and adnoids removed, the tubes in his ears, they brought him to me after the surgery, he had just a little blood coming out of his nose and ears, I FAINTED. I took him to med express yesterday, and both ears are red and swollen, she couldn't tell me if he has an ear infection cause of the swelling What????? she couldnt see if he had an ear infection!!! she asked for his peditrians number and i gave it to her.
she came back in the room and told me to make an appointment today, The peditrian didn't want her to give him anything cause of the back to back antibiotices he just had. So make the kid suffer!!!
i asked her what about the swelling? tylenol or motrin, that's there damn answer to everything, i asked what was causing this does he have allergies or what? she don't know and can't test Micah until he is 4 years old... well can't anyone give me an answer to what the hell is going on with his ear??????? i am so pissed right now..
so i went home and called the washington emergency line, and told them who ever is on call to call me now!!!! she called back and i explained everything to her.. and she told me to double up motrin and clairton for the night so he is comfortable and when to call today to make an appointment to tell them she said he is to be seen today!!!! so here we go again,,, i am not leaving that office till i have an answer and if they can't answer me then send me to a damn specialist!!!

I hate when doctors give you the run around.; My daughter just went through this for Kassidy. She needed antibiotics and nobody would give them to her until they had proof that it was bacterial. A mother knows her own child! She finally found some ampicillin in the back of her fridge, and found a new doctor who immediately put her on antibiotics.

Took him to the peditricians, and they gave him a total exam, she was asking me questions about my family history and my husbands concerning allergies? so i told her we both have allergies, and i also get sinus infections.
She told me that both ears are still swollen and the redness is from Micah scatching them, she told me his nose is slightly swollen and eyes alittle puffy, nose stuffed up, but not fever, she "thinks" he is starting to get allergies with a combination of his two year old molars coming in, is causing the ears to swell, she told me to put him on clairton, and rotate the tylenol and motrin for pain and swelling, and the clairton for three weeks, and if he is still messing with his ears to bring him back in a week, no ear infection so that was a relief,,
i don't know if i liked her answer or not... but Saturday night, Micah's nose finally broke and all that congestion was running out of his nose, it was gross, but maybe that was the problem,, like the peditrician said there is no way to test him for allergies until he is 4 years old...
So i think he is improving some, we will have to see what the clairton does, Mike will finally be home after this week - so if Micah is still messing with his ears, he's going right back to the doctors again!!! So keep Micah in your prayers, hopefullly this was the problem with his ears...
Thanks everyone....

Unfortunately, if it's allergies, there will be more discomfort. But, it will be easier to deal with, knowing what's bothering him. My son (almost 34 year old, 6'2", 260#) who is and will always be my baby boy, has allergies and sinus problems that sometimes throw him into migraines, and there's nothing I can do except hurt for him.

Give Micah a hug from me!

He definitely needs the cool vaporizer. The vapor bath is also good. Does he do a shower (with you or dad)? You can also put the vapor thing in the bottom of the shower.

Hope he feels better soon. My two year old granddaughter has some allergies too - at least that is what they think. It can be frustrating

Haley, our youngest, Melissa, has had alergies since she was really small, but never had ear infections. We would use the vaporizer and as Gina said, at that time Dimetapp was the thing. Claritin is really good, also. Vapor Rub on her chest seemed to help, also. We were up with her many a night when she was small. We visited the piney woods of East Texas when the pine trees were blooming one year when she was about 2 years old. There was pine pollen everywhere, and she got really stuffed up from that. I spent the day in bed with her giving her antihistamines and tylenol trying to help her to feel better. It's no fun at all.

She did handle it better as she got older, but in the spring and fall of each year, we had a couple of months of alergy problems. She lives in the Austin area now, and has even more problems there with all the cedar trees, but she's old enough to be able to deal with it on her own now.

So hope he gets to feeling better and better. The Claritin seems to become more effective after being on it for about 2 weeks. It's not a quick fix. Seems it has to get into your system a bit.

I just can't believe that a daycare center could have cats.

My DIL, Emily, and almost 6yo g-daughter, Abby, break out if they're in a room where a cat has been. They can't even get within 10 feet of one outside. Cats and rabbits really affect them badly.

Once, Emily flew to be in a college friend's wedding, not knowing there were two cats in the house. The friend had forgotten that Emily was highly allergic. She took her meds and tried to stay there, but it got to the point that she almost couldn't breathe, so she escaped to a hotel.

Donna,
I have two yorkies, but as most of you already know they are non-shedding dogs that is the only reason i got these dogs cause i have bad allergies too, i bath these dogs once a week also, and i keep my house very clean, i mop every day, dust 2-3 times a week, run the sweeper every other day, plus clean the bathroom, wash bed sheets twice a week, just to keep the dust down in the house cause of my allergies, i also have an air purifier, and change the furance filters and air filters every change of season, which gets expensive, but worth the money. now with micah having them, its crazy,, i been watching him very close to see what triggers them, i'm writing down everything... so we will just have to see what happens, i did notice his nose getting all stuffy, monday night, that was from being in daycare all day, that's why i think its the cat, could be wrong...

Haley,

You are just getting ran though the mill here. I hope things get better soon.
They don't need for you to get down as well. When my son was 2 they tested him for allergies but that was 19 years ago and they did it where I had to hold him
and they did the tests on his arms. Found out he was allergic to dust, ragweed and grass pollens. Your still in my prayers. :justahug:

I wonder why they aren't doing it until he is 4 years old? is there a reason they changed it? i really want to take him to a specialist, but i need my peditrican to send me to one for my insurance to pay for it!

When do you find to work? You are doing everything right.
Tricksie's hair is long and she does shed some. Do you keep your yorkies short?

i do most of my cleaning that i can in the morning (4 am) while micah is sleeping, run home at lunch or at night.. its very hard, Micah did help me bath the dogs last night :) he's so helpful. and yes my dogs are always shaved.... i use to do the fancy bows and dress them up.. but that life is way over for me, i can't even find time to dress myself up let alone dogs... ;)

i read somewhere a long time ago that you can be allergic to cats, but not dogs; but not the other way around. When someone is severely allegic to cats it's usually do to like a protein or something in there salava. & with the way cats clean themselves & everything else that's why people can't be anywhere near them. The congestion could be causing the ear pain. When my sinuses get bad my whole head hurts, my cheeks & forward are the worst, but it sometimes gets to my ears too. Plus with this up & down whether lately my sinuses are going nuts from that too.

I know what you mean - my head fills like its going to pop off today with all the pressure! But i just keep myself moving... but with Micah it could also be his molars adding to the pain he had a mild fever friday night... so i'm keeping him on the tylenol for a couple more days plus the clairton at night - he is still messing with his ears. so when Mike gets home i might have to make him another dr. apt. there going to get sick of seeing me, but i really don't care... if my son is in pain there going to do something about it, right?

Poor little Micah! I'm glad the doctor put him on a regimen though. At least it's not an infection, and a lot of people do grow out of allergies. If not, as you know, you work around them.

My daughter was allergic to one cat and none of her others. My oldest gd was also severely allergic to birds when she was around Micah's ago. She outgrew that.

The fever is probably from the molars. He is at the age where he may be sick for 2 weeks and then the picture of health in a flash, especially with the teething.

I really feel for you too. It sounds like you aren't sleeping much. How is Thomas the Train? How many times have you seen it now?

Judy, i think i know all the trains by name now :D, we'll this was his last week on Clairton, he is still pulling at his ears, and they cancelled his apt. for the 26th i guess there taking that day off, which pisses me off, cause Mike took that day off to take him to the doctors, so i will be calling for another follow up for his ears..
I never did sleep much, but being home alone, i try and get up early so i can get some cleaning done while Micah is still sleeping. so we can have some play time together at night...

Haley, if it does turn out to be the cats, please don't blame yourself too much for not thinking of this sooner. You are being a fantastic mom and we all do our very best as we go along this wonderous adventure. We all look back and say if we'd only done this, if we'd only thought of that. Don't do that to yourself. Micah loves you and your doing an amazing job!!!

So sincerely hope that things get better very soon!!
