I'm not sure what is going on - but last night, just after midnight, Gary was watching TV when he stood up and said he needed his asthma inhaler because he was having trouble breathing. He said it came on very quickly. I got it for him on my way to bed. I got in bed but in a couple of minutes, he came and got me to give him a breathing treatment (for his asthma). He was really having trouble breathing. We did the treatment and it helped a little, but I listened to his lungs with my stethoscope and could hear fluid bubbling in his lungs. This is due to his heart failure - and means he needs an extra water pill - but breathing problems like this usually do not happen suddenly like this one.

Also, his blood pressure and pulse rate were high. I gave him the water pill, got him in bed, put on his oxygen, and then he was chilling - but he didn't have a fever. It was so weird!!! He turned up his electric blanket on high  and had trouble getting warm. Of course, he was up every hour peeing. He also had a headache. I checked his blood pressure and pulse everytime he got up and it came down to about normal by morning.

He has felt just whipped out the whole day today, partly because he didn't sleep much, but partly I think from this "episode". He keeps saying he is just tired, but I think it's a bit more than that. He has an appointment with his heart doc next Friday - so if he doesn't get worse or have any more "episodes" we'll just wait till then to go. If not, he goes to a clinic where a nurse practitioner answers calls 24/7, so I can call and get help there if I need it.

He has done so well since being in the hospital in October - but we did a lot of running and visiting on our trip to Oklahoma - so maybe this is related to that - but for some reason, it feels different......

Thank goodness you were nearby to check on him. He's in good hands with you being a nurse. I'm sure that it was a scary episode since it came on so quickly and I hope that everything's under control now. I'll say a prayer for your husband's health. I know that you're very worried about him.

Gayle, I can see why you were concerned about this coming on so quickly. It might have scared him a bit and that could cause his BP to go up also...kind of like the white coat syndrome ya know?

Please tell him he's in my prayers and keep us updated on how he is feeling.

Oh, Gayle, do you think maybe you should call his cardiologist and see what they think you should do? They might need to check him out before next Friday. Take care, you and your hubby will be in my prayers.

He felt a lot better when he got up this morning - we went out to eat breakfast. He looks better too - but he says he feels kinda "shakey" inside and also feels weak. He says he definitely feels better though. He laid back down to rest when we got home from breakfast. The cardiologists office isn't open today - but if I need to I can still call and talk to the nurse practitioner. I will if he has another episode. I'm going to call on Monday to see if he can get in before Friday. I think he is OK, but something odd definitely occurred.

Thanks for all the support, guys!

That's wonderful Gayle that he is feeling better. I'm wondering though why he is still feeling shaky inside. I know you'll be keeping a close eye on him.

I know, that "feeling shakey inside" is kinda weird. Just like the chills with no fever.

Anyway, he is feeling lots better this evening - no shaky feelings now. Hope this is all over. Maybe it was some sort of virus?????

Well Gals, he had another "episode" last night. Woke up at about 2:30AM, could not breathe laying down. I gave him a nebulizer treatment, but it did not help. He spent the rest of the night sitting in the recliner. He took an extra water pill and he feels better now (10:00AM). He does not want to go to the ER. He says is OK to stay home, I agree.

We will DEFINITELY be trying to get into the doctor on Monday. Something is going on with him, and I think it is related to his heart. If I hadn't been through this several times before, I would be crazy. But I know that if he gets really bad, he will say it is time to go to the ER. Thankfully, I'm off work till the 12th, so I can be here with him. Even when I am at work, I'm only 15 mins away, so I can get home quickly if needed. My daughter lives only 10 mins away and she doesn't work, so she can get to him if I can't.

Please don't worry too much (just a little is fine). I think he'll be OK till Monday and then maybe we can get some answers. If not, we'll just zip over to the hospital.

Gayle....I was so praying he wouldn't have another episode. Hopefully the Dr can see him on Monday and can figure out what is going on. I hope your husband able to stay calm through all of this, but not being able to breathe well can throw us into a panic.

Thanks Janet, yes, he was a little panicked Wednesday night. But he has had asthma for so long that he is used to that "not being able to breathe" feeling. I can tell though, that he is worried about what is going on.

He has been in the house since we got home Wednesday (well, we did go out to breakfast one morning) and this afternoon, when I got home from the basketball game, he said he had "housitosis" :D and needed to get out. We went to Luby's cafeteria for dinner and he was hungry and ate well. Now, he is watching the football game, but asked for his oxygen, so I know his breathing is not too good.

I'm supposed to go to the dentist to have a permanent crown put on Monday morning at 9:00, but I'm going to cancel so that I can work on getting him into the clinic. The crown can wait.

Called the heart doc this morning, they didn't think it was heart - thought it was lung problems, so we got into see the lung doc. They thought he might have a blood clot in his lung, so we spent five hours at the hospital getting checked for that - it was negative. That is good, but we don't know what the heck is wrong.

We'll be trying to get back into the heart doc tomorrow. Gary is fine at rest, but when he walks or tries to do something, he has no energy at all. Very strange.

By just what you've described...it does sound like some kind of blockage somewhere doesn't it? Gayle I'll keep you and Gary in my prayers. Hopefully they can find what is causing it and get it resolved.

Thanks for all your support, guys! It means so much to me.

Gary and I spent the day in the cardiologist's office - only to find no cause for the difficulty in breathing episodes he had last Thurs and Sat. He had blood work, EKG, echocardiogram, and they looked at his pacemaker readout (he has a computer in his pacemaker that shows every heart beat, so they can see if he has an irregular beats, which he did not).

We did find out that he is a bit dehydrated, which is why he is feeling so dizzy and tired right now. That is good that we know what is causing him to feel that way, and that we can fix it. But he is frustrated that they can't tell him exactly what happened to cause him to suddenly feel like he coudn't breathe. Being in health care, I know that sometimes you just don't know why something happens in the human body, there is no explanation. This seems to be one of those times.

The doctor thinks he will feel much better once we get him re-hydrated! I think so too!

Gayle, so glad to know that everything seems to be okay and that you know he is dehydrated and can treat that. Hope he does feel much better when his hydration improves!!!

Gary had a good day today! He felt well enough to go to his pulmonary rehab classes. His doctor thinks that he should do pulmonary rehab - it is like physical therapy for your lungs. It was only a class today, but next week he will start some exercises. He needs to be exercising, so it should be good for him! I'm glad that he felt well enough to go, I think he is making progress.
