View Full Version : Travel woes :(

In November, my friend Kandace asked me to go on a girls trip to Cancun with her and her friends in February. I was like yeah that would be awesome! She came to New York with me, and a week after we got back I asked her about the trip to see when we were booking and what the total cost was, and what days I'd have to take off work. She said that while we were in New York, her friend booked the trip already without me. And apparently there were no seats left. I was pretty hurt by that. She seems to have been avoiding me ever since. I'm a little upset at how sketchy she has been to me.
Anyways, the week after that, I found out that my family (not immediate, but aunts and uncles and my grandma) were going to Cancun for two weeks and got a really good deal. I was asked to go on that trip too, but I thought maybe I'd try to get my own trip going with some other friends first... I did a mexico trip with family last year and it was great, but I just think I'd have a lot more fun with some girls my own age. Well luckily I found two girls who said definitely they'd come for sure!!! So I declined the family trip and the girls and I were going to figure out after New Years when we were going to do this!
Yesterday I sent one girl a message about it. I couldn't believe the message I got back. On New Years Eve, she "fell for a guy from Eastern Canada" and promised she'd go visit him in March, so she won't have money to go on my trip in February. She was like "I hope you won't be mad at me" :( Seriously? I just got ditched for a guy she met for one night. So I emailed the other girl to see if she was still interested in just the two of us going or if she could find other friends to go. She said "Oh yeah I can't go. I'm broke"
So there go my plans :( I've been in a bad mood since yesterday because of it.

Lindsey, Sorry your plans all fell though. Wish I could go with you. But you would have to get me drunk or dopped up before I got on the plane. I've never flown before. Hope something works out for you and you still get to go.
:(

Aww! Planes aren't that bad. Or maybe I'm just trying to convince you to go with me ;) lol no.... it looks like it's not happening. I've been begging everyone I know, even people I didn't think I'd want to go with, and everyone is saying they can't for some reason or another. So no Mexico for me this year :( A friend from work thinks I should just fly to Vancouver or Toronto for a weekend and go shopping with all my Mexico money haha. Problem is I don't want to do that alone either!

Lindsey isn't there anyway you can still go with your family? I'm sorry things are not working out as you had hoped. You should probably look at this from a different angle....maybe you were not suppose to go at this time. I always feel there is a reason.

My family is there already :( They left on the weekend.
I think everything happens for a reason too... maybe soon I am going to need all this money for something else!

Hubby saw a special a couple of days ago for 4 nights at a nice hotel including round trip air fare to London for around $800. Maybe you could plan an awesome trip like that for a later date.

Marilyn that's a great idea! I've always wanted to go overseas. That's also the kind of trip where I think I COULD go alone as long as I had some sightseeing information. I didn't want to go on a beach vacation alone because I'd get lonely sitting on a beach by myself!

I can understand how you feel. We used to go snow skiing every year and when we'd come back we'd always have people tell us to let them know next year because they wanted to go too. It ended up that they always had an excuse on why they couldn't go but unlike your situation we still went. Maybe you could pick a date a few months from now and try planning it again.

Yeah that's how things go, isn't it? If I plan another trip I will get deposits from people right at the start to make sure they're coming. Luckily I didn't book anything yet. If I would book another trip for Mexico it would be next winter, because the trip I was planning is already later than I wanted to go. January is cold so I wanted to get away from the cold! But February is still pretty cold... March and April starts warming up so I don't need to go anywhere warm anymore!

I'm so sorry, Lindsay. I know how much you love to travel to warm places in winter. You are right though, everything happens for a reason. So, maybe you are right, you'll need the money for something else - or maybe another great trip will come along unexpectedly!!!

Thanks to Marilyn's reply I have decided to save my money for a few more months and go to Europe in the fall :D I have tons of vacation time saved up still and a lot of banked hours to use. A friend of mine a few years ago went to Europe for 4 weeks with Contiki Tours and loved it... it's a tour company for 18-35 year olds. I have found a 16 day tour that covers France, Monaco, Italy, Vatican City, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, and driving through Belgium. I would be flying in and out of London so I think I will also tack on the 3 day London tour which is pretty cheap, and since I'm already there I might as well! Anyways, I'm super excited and nervous about it, since I will be going alone, but what a great chance to meet other people from all around the world!

Lindsey, that sounds great!! And if your going with a tour of people around your age, you will get to know some of them quickly and it won't be like going alone. You may meet some friends for life. Sincerely hope it works out!!

One of my nieces went on a similar month long backpacking Europe about 3 years ago. She's still talking about her adventures!

I hope you get to take the trip. Of course, you can always come to Houston - fly down for the weekend!

Lindsay, I think that sounds like a great trip - I know you will have a ball!!! I wouldn't mind traveling alone at all either, in fact, there are many times when I am traveling alone (usually for business) and I love it.

I'm glad that things worked out and that you are happy with your decision!!!

Now, I'm jealous, I've never been to Europe!!!

Too bad that everyone can't have an opportunity to visit Europe. It's a lot smaller than some of us realize. I'll have to find a map that superimposes Europe on top of the United States to give a perspective.

I found a couple of links with comparisons:

I've really never been anywhere. I've been to Florida and we drove so I've been through the states in between Indiana and Florida. I've been to Dallas, Texas, I loved it there so much! Also been to Tulsa, Ok. That's it.

Exactly what I was thinking!

By the way, Kandace needs to be told off but good! Send me her phone number and I'll give her a talking to!

I'm jealous. I may only get to go to Arizona for, like, three days this year. Woo.
Congratulations, though. It sounds like an absolute blast.

Janet, once y'all get caught up from hubby being off, and the economy improves, which I'm sure it will, you have to get out!!!! There are lots of tours. My BIL wanted to go to Mexico so bad, but my sister had absolutely no interest at all. She'd been to the border towns and wanted no part of it. He finally told her he was booking a tour and going by himself if she wouldn't go. She went and had a wonderful time.

There are trips, if you shop around, that aren't too costly. Traveling is so much fun!!! Just getting away from it all is one of the biggest things. I've been blessed to have done a fair amount of traveling, both business and pleasure, and can't wait until our next trip.

I am hoping someday to do some traveling. I would love it myself. I always thought that I'd be traveling more than what little I have...so I'm not giving up hope. I'm not real interested in going overseas, but there are so many places here in the states that I would love to visit.

Lindsey I admire your spunk and independence that is wonderful.. Save for the trip to Europe I am sure you will not regret it. I have done some traveling, but my dream is to go to Italy one day. So much culture and I would love to see where my family came from.

lol awww.... Kandace has always been more of a "going out" friend. I pretty much only see her when we go to a bar. That's the kind of person she is, which is why I don't think I would have had as much fun on her trip anyway. I found out last time I went to Mexico that too many margaritas on the beach in the sun during the day don't allow me to go out at night lol. Kandace was really good in New York, just a little upset one night when she wanted to go out and the rest of us passed out after a long day. But we have not seen each other since, and she hasn't been inviting me on anything else. She's the same girl I took pole dancing classes with, and she didn't tell me she signed up for the second set of classes until the classes were already full :( A lot of my friends have told me many times that she seemed really sketchy.. but she was always so nice to me! Oh well. Friends come and go.

Thanks Gina! Everyone I've talked to about Europe have been so supportive, even my parents! My mom is a little uneasy about me going alone, but they both know how badly I want to go.
I was supposed to go to Scotland as an exchange student in high school, because it was my dream to go there. I had all the paperwork filled out, the medical work done and signed by my doctor, but before I could submit it, my boyfriend at the time and his family talked me out of it. I dated the guy for 3 years and thought I would marry him, and he told me he would take me someday if I didn't go without him. I gave up my chance, and he broke up with me less than a year later :(
My dad's side of the family comes from Scotland and England, and my grandparents on my mom's side are both Hungarian. I really really want to go to Hungary but I would have to add on another week. I'd like to go back someday though and see Hungary eventually. I'd like to find family there!
