We've known for a while now that daughter, sil, and two granddaughters were probably going to have to move to San Antonio or Houston (they/we live in Austin). Well today, sil found out that it will be Houston and could be in 2 months and at the very latest, by the end of the year. SIGH! He will be getting a big promotion with his company - a good company that has been VERY good to him. That part is really good!!!
I knew it was coming and I'm OK, it's just that I've been so lucky to have them all here with me. :)
They will most likely be living in north Houston (or north of Houston) so the drive to and from Houston/Austin will not be that bad ~2 hours or so. It will be OK, it's just sad tonight!

I am sorry you are sad about your daughter & sil having to move. it would be hard for anyone to turn down such a good offer with the way the economy is right now.

I'm sorry your kids are moving. It will be a big change for everyone. When you are feeling really down, just say to yourself "At least they're not moving to Scotland like Betsi's kids" ;)

You are SOOOO right, Betsi!!! Gosh that would be so hard. I have a friend whose daughter and g-daughters are in Switzerland. She sees them once a year! :(

Here's a hug Gayle  I'm so glad it's not any further than that and what a great opportunity for you SIL. I know you'll be fine...you're such a strong woman.

Aww, I'm sorry Gayle. It's sad when families have to live apart. I moved to Pittsburgh right after high school--500 miles away from all family and friends (other than Brendon). It was really hard and I ended up moving back home 5 months later. At least your kids will be a lot closer than that and you can see them on weekends anytime you want. Do you guys have the same phone company so you can have free mobile to mobile? That really helps.
I'm sorry you're sad. *hugs*
It is sad when you're used to them being right close by. When my daughter moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island (a 1/2 hour away), I was so upset.
You'll get used to it. 2 hours isn't too bad., You guys travel a lot, so driving doesn't seem to phase you.
Sending you a hug:bighug:

Gayle, sorry you are sad, it's hard when you have been use to having them near.

Gayle, do you have other ties in Austin? Come on down to Houston with them. You know you'd find a job here.
I know exactly how you feel. Jeff and Emily took my Abby and Sarah up to Nacogdoches and I'm still struggling with having them a couple hours away and seeing them about once a month.

Awww, Gayle, I'm so sorry this is happening. It's tough having them so far away. As you know mine are in Austin and San Antonio and I'm stuck here 1.5 to 2 hrs away. Hopefully it will be later in the year so you will have a little more time to adjust to the idea before they actually move. (((((((((((Gayle))))))))))))
Aww Gayle.. I only can imagine how you feel. Mine are still around and not married... Like the others said its not to far and you will get to see them often. hugs !

When you're used to just popping in and seeing your children and grandchildren any move very far away is upsetting. I'm like you, I would hate for my kids to move that far away but, as the others have pointed out, it could be further. At least it's a distance that easily driven in a day.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragement. I know it will be OK, just different. I took myself and my daughter, 500 miles from her grandma, 23 years ago (daughter was 9). It was fine. Daughter is super close with her grandma. They saw each other several times a year and it was fine. I'm sure I will see them about once a month and it will be fine too.
Daughter just realized yesterday that she has prepaid for 18 months of orthodontic work here in Austin, so I'm sure I'll be meeting her half way, picking up g-daughter and taking her to the orthodontist every 6 weeks!!! LOL!
We don't even know when this will happen. Could be this summer, could be next winter. Just have to wait and see.

Gayle, is your daughter still moving? It's been about 2 months, so thought it was time to check.

They are still in the waiting mode. Sil's been told it will happen any time by the end of the year - but because it depends on when the former owner decides to retire, and since he has no timetable, there's no predicting when it will happen. So, we are just living as if it isn't going to happen, in order to not fret or worry about it!
Thanks for asking!
That's a good idea. You really never know what will happen in the end anyway.
When Jess was living up here, and I was still in Brooklyn, I saw them at least once each month, if not more. I like to drive, and would spend a couple of days there.
They were about 5 hours one way. It was less visiting, but each time was more special.
I also mailed the children packages a lot. If you put $2.00 worth of crayons, candy and whatnot in a box, it's exciting to a child.
My MIL used to mail Jessie a letter with one piece of gum in it every so often. It was so exciting to Jessie when she was a little girl!

That's really good advice, Judy. Thanks!

Judy, I'm going to start a tradition of sending my g-kids a little treat like that. Abigail especially loves stuff like that.
Like I said, my MIL used to do it, and I learned it from her. Children love to get mail and packages. Jessie used to get so happy and excited with her letter and her piece of gum!
Sometimes, if Kohl's is having an especially good sale, and I spend $75 and get free shipping, I'll include a top for each of the kids. They love that! Kohl's tops on sale can cost $3.00 by the time you're done with the discounts, and they will split the mailing addresses so I get mine and they get theirs.
