View Full Version : Throat Spasms
Wouldn't you know it , if something weird happens I am always the one to get it.. Lately this has been happening when I go to bed and lay down right before I am drifting off into sleep. I get this feeling like someone is choking me, naa my husband is not even in room. lol anyway, I jump up but I am breathing, and then I calm down and it goes away. Once I fall asleep I am fine. I had it in the past and always chalked it up to aniexty. But now I get it nightly.
So I went to the dr yesterday and told her and she said what is happening is that the muscle in my throat goes into a spasm , she herself had it once so she knows the feeling. She asked me am I eating late or anxious. I had been drinking tea and eating cookies at night.. and right before I go to bed I drink some pomogranite juice . She said don't have anything after dinner , if I am to have tea have it no later tha 7. Maybe its the acid from the tea and what not. She also told me to elevate my head with extra pillows. So I am going to try this, she said if it does not go away in a few weeks, to come back and she will send me to ENT..Don't want to have my throat and stomach scoped.
Has anyone ever experienced this? I am getting nervous now. I hate the feeling , I hope it goes away as quickly as it came on. Like I mentioned before I occassionly got it but it disappeared... I looked it up through google and I see that its not that uncommon.
Never a dull moment.

Bless your heart! That sounds serious. Don't wait too long before you go to the ENT if it doesn't go away. I imagine it's very scary to feel like you are being choked in your sleep:eek:

Oh, Gina, that has to be a horrible feeling. One of my fears is choking. I this happened, I'd be a nervour wreck. So hope the fix is a simple one!!!!
The dr. told me its not serious but it still scares me. If it doesn't get better by next week I will go to an ENT dr. Why does these things happen only to meeeeee ??? .
Marilyn it is very scarey and I am scared when I go to bed now.

I completely understand Gina. Weird things happen to my husband Gary too - if it can be strange, he'll get it. It is very disconcerting!!! I think I would visit an ENT just to get some more information about the condition.

Gina, you poor thing!!! I hope it settled your fears some with your Dr. saying it's not serious. I've not ever had it happen but can imagine the feeling and it's not good. I wouldn't wait too long either. Keep us informed okay?

I've never heard of it either but I hope that by following the drs orders that you'll get some relief from it. That would be scary.
I have had some strange symptoms related to acid reflux. If this were me, I would go to the ENT now just to know what it is.
I have had the endoscopy. They put you out, which I always enjoy. You don't feel anything, not even when you wake up.
If it is acid reflux, it is usually manageable by watching what you eat and taking the little purple pill (nexium).

Thanks all for your advice . I made an appt. with an ENT but Thursday is the only day they can squeeze me in. I really would have liked it sooner , it didn't go away and now I am a nervous wreck. I do get scared for I have it nightly. Wish me luck!

Try not to be too nervous Gina...that may make it worse. I know with my acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease -- GERD) I felt like I was having a heart attack and I would vomit this brown stuff. Rick even called the ambulance and they took me to the hospital. It wasn't a heart attack, but that same night....my brother was taken to the hospital with an actual heart attack. I went back to town to be with him and he was on the same guerney and my blood was still on the floor from the IV.
I take medicine for it now and don't have any problems.

When did you do that, Janet? Did you just not let us know......or what? I'm glad that the medicine helps you.
Gina, you'll have to let us know how things go as soon as you get back home from the doctor.
Glad your feeling better Janet, that was scary to..
Thanks Girls! My appt. is tomorrow at 12.. My girlfriend and SIL both had the tube put down from the nose, they said it didnt hurt at all and were up. I am using the same ENT dr. I will keep you posted...
