I really love to read and I was wondering if any of you ladies would be interested in maybe starting a book club thread. We can all agree on what book to read and come on here to discuss it. We can go by Oprah's book list or whatever anyone is interested in. I am currently reading Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. I saw the movie and I enjoyed it so much I decided to read the book. Anyway, if you guys are interested in something like this, let me know.:)

I love to read to and read everything from novels, self-help, newspapers and magazines. I find I have more time to read books in the winter time, but I think a book club would be so fun! I have a lot of Oprah's book club books. I really like ones I have to think about a little bit.

Great. Let's see if anyone else is interested and maybe we can get something going.:)

Should we take turns suggesting books or should we each suggest one and everyone vote on it? I want everyone's input. And maybe we can designate a certain day and time we will all be on so we can discuss the book. That way there can be great conversations with lots of us on at the same time.

Ohh, well, maybe one person could suggest a few books they like and then the group chooses from their selection and we could go around in a circle that way. A designated time sounds good to talk about the book but realistically thinking that may be easier said than done. Maybe that's just me though. I am excited about this!

Ok, well I guess we'll see if a few more ladies would like to join in. I'll keep bumping this thread up to see if anyone else wants in. Then we can decide on our first book. As for the "meeting" times, I realize everyone is on different time schedules and time zones but we can choose something convenient for most and we can always post on here whenever we want to. This sounds like it might work out nicely.:)

It sounds like a great idea to me! But not sure if I will have the time to participate. I absolutely LOVE to read.....but only certain types of books. My favorite are all the suspense type thrillers, the more "edge of your seat" the better! But I'm also one where if I get a book and can't "get into it" after the first chapter, I put it down and never pick it back up again. Not really into self-help type books and have never read one of Oprah's pics (although I've heard they were good). What I can do is, depending on the book and excert from it, I can join in on certain ones, may not be able to do them all.

I'm not real big into thrillers/mysteries and that sort of thing. I'm more into novel types. Peoples lives in different places. Here are some of what I have, been quite some time since I've read them, but I always place a red dot on the ones I truly enjoyed:

Deep End of the Ocean by Jacquelyn Mitchard (also a movie)

American Icon by Pat Booth

Gap Creek by Robert Morgan

Jewel by Brett Lott

A Map of the World by Jane Hamilton

Vinegar Hill by A. Manette Ansay

It doesn't really matter how many we have in the book club. Some selections may appeal to some while they may not to others. We could have like 30 - 60 days to read it and then come together in one thread where no other posts would be allowed except for the discussion of the book. What do you think?

Sounds good to me Janet. I am pretty open to reading all types of books so I am ok with whatever anyone else would like to suggest. It has been my experience that sometimes the book that doesn't necessarily fall into your preferred category, turns out to be the one you enjoyed the most. So, where to we begin?

I only read Dean Koontz. I'm a little OCD & I had trouble finding books I really love. Well I started reading him when I was a sophomore in high school & have only read books by him since (unless I have to read something for school). I have over 60 of his books now, some of which are out of print & cost me a pretty penny on ebay. If you guys decide you want to read one by him I'm all in. I would suggest Watchers, it is a thriller, but it has a really nice love story & a very special golden retriever.

Dean Koontz is great! I also have a hard time finding books I like... so I just don't read much anymore. But I love his books.

I also just posted a new thread (this thread "inspired" me to post it) about a really good book I read over the weekend. Here's the link in case anyone wants to check it out: http://www.4womentalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8763#post8763

I posted in another thread about you being a Koontz fan. And I don't blame you on being OCD where his books are concerned. He knows how to take the reader to the edge with most of his books. I don't have as many as you do but I've borrowed and read quite a few. There was one book of his that I just could not get going on - not sure why and can't even remember the name! I'll have to check at home and see if I still have it and let you know the name of it. It might have been Watchers but not sure - I know it started out with this woman and her son and some old lady looking in the window at them - scared the boy - just couldn't get beyond that to read the rest of it.

I also like some of Patricia Cornwell's books. Only one of her's I struggled to get through (and I mean struggled!!!) was the one she wrote about Jack the Ripper. Here I thought it was going to be a mystery type along the lines of Jack the Ripper and his tyrade on England back in the late 1800's - but nooooo.....it was HER theories on who he could have been based on her investigation into it - can you say BORING?!?!?!?! Other than that, I've liked all the books by her I've read. They aren't the same "thriller" that Koontz writes, but they are suspense filled!

I can't think off the top of my head which book that would be, but I know it's not watchers. How long ago was it you tried to read it, was it a new book out at the time?

It had come out in paperback so it had been released the year before in hard cover - and it's been probably 5-6 years ago. I went to Amazon cause it was killing me not knowing the name of it and I found it - The Servants of Twilight Do you remember that one? If so, should I go back and try to stick it out, get through the first chapter?

I've read it, but it's been a little while. It's not one of my favorites that stick out, but I did finish it & like it. I'll have to go home & refresh my memory as too what it was about.

I just finished reading One Door Away from Heaven by Dean Koontz. I must admit, I struggled through it. Dean Koontz is a good writer but sometimes he can just go on and on and drags things through to the point of losing his readers' interest. The end made it worthwhile but it took me a month to finish that book when it usually takes me about a week if the book flows well.
