Homemade scent?

This time of the year i love to have a saucepan on the stove and simmer a sliced up orange with cinnamon sticks in it for a few hours.
I got bored just doing the same all the time, so i googled it and found another recipe, here it is for those that like to do this.

1 1/2 cups warm water
4 cinnamon sticks broken into pieces
1 tsp. imitation vanilla
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. ginger or 1 medium piece of crystallized ginger
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1/2 tsp. allspice
1 1/2 tsp. vegetable oil (helps with binding the scents and rapid water absorption)

This one also sounds great for this time of the year (apple pie)

Easy as Apple Pie

Simmer a sliced apple and a couple of cinnamon sticks in some water on your stove. The whole house will smell like apple pie.

around thanksgiving i start a simmer pot of smell good on my stove. i use 1 cup of water 1 orange one lemon several cinnamon sticks and 1 tbsp. of cloves...i also put this on top of my fireplace when i have a fire going and it really smells the house up...every time somebody comes over they just go on and on about how good my house smells....and i have three dogs and two cats in the house all the time!!!;)i also add whatever other spices that catch my fancy...sometimes i add pumpkin pie spice or vanilla....just whatever i think would smell good in there.

These all sound very interesting and I will definitly try them. When you say "on top of my fireplace", where do you mean. I would like to try this, but don't know where to put it.

I can't really add to what you have already provided as I use pretty much the same ingredients. Cloves, cinnammon sticks, orange slices, apple slices - it does make the house smell so good!! I also have a recipe for homemade christmas ornaments made out of applesauce and various ground spices - makes the house smell so wonderful when you are making them!!! But sometimes, I take the easy way out - I have a Lampe Berge' that I got for Christmas a few years ago and have a christmas scent that I put in it around Thanksgiving - smells almost like I made my own.

It will be interesting to read if any others have different simmer recipes they use.

I've just always used candles, but I like this stove top idea a lot. I wonder if you could put the ingredients in a cup and place it on an electric cup warmer...you know, like for keeping coffee warm. Think it would work?:)

I'm sure it would. To me, it wouldn't be any different than those mini crock-pot type ones you can get to burn scents in. Can't hurt to try it and let us know how it works:)

I will try it...first I want to get some cinnamon sticks and I won't be shopping any till this weekend. I want to check out some doggie things at Target and Petsmart and then I need to find me some jeans.

I'm sure that would work, you might want to get the mixture to reach boiling point on the stove first so it's heated up properly, than poor it into those little crock pots ... i'm going to try this ;)

My MIL has done the apple pie one and it smells WONDERFUL!!!!!!! Geez! I need to do creative stuff like this!

Marilyn...i have a fireplace that is built onto the original fireplace....it's kind of hard to explain so here goes it is like a huge steel box that has vents on it so that when the fire inside gets a certain temp. it circulates hot air throughout the house. Our house was built in 1917 (we are renovating) and the original fireplace was just not keeping the house warm in the winter unless you were practically standing in it...so we got this attachment from Fire King put on. Anyway i just use a pretty metal potpourri pot on top of the metal box with the smell good stuff in it. Sometimes i peel apples for pie and also citrus peels and throw them in the actual fire itself with cloves and cinnamon sticks and that smells delicious also.

I did the apple pie one the other night and it was like heaven in my house. It smelled sooo good. I never would have thought of doing this...I used my little crock-pot thingy. :D
