View Full Version : Finally....Carpet Is Clean

I finally got the family room carpet cleaned and waiting on it to dry. Now I need to figure out how to keep the dogs from having accidents. It doesn't happen often, but it sure makes me angry.
I need to do the living room carpet also, but will have to wait so I can move that furniture in the family room. :) I just hope it stays clean for awhile...so one seems to really care except me. :(
It is such a nice feeling when you finished cleaning , maybe you can put a baby gate up and not have them go in when unsupervised.. Just a suggestion..

Glad you got your carpet done Janet, I'm sure that makes ya happy. It is nice when things are clean, but it is hard to keep it clean for long with the doggies. One of mine has accidents from time to time, it is annoying, but ya gotta love 'em. Mine are wherever we are, we don't confine them except at night time. I swear they are just like small children.. Toys all over the living room:confused: it's actually funny at times, just trying to keep those picked up.

Paula, my 2 boys are just like that, wherever we are - there they are! I have one little boy who marks a few sprinkles here and there. But we don't have much carpet (and those rooms are closed off - Gary and I don't go in them) so they just wipe up.
Janet, I know it feels so good to have a clean carpet, but mine just gets dirty even when they are hardly walked on. There is carpet in a tiny little hallway (probably 3 ft. X 4 ft.) and in my mom's bedroom and TV room which is the 3rd bedroom in my house. I had the carpets cleaned after she moved over with my daughter - about 18 months ago. My hubby and I walk on that little tiny hall carpet, maybe once a day or less and it just looks awful. I love a clean carpet, but I wish I didn't have any!

I know what you mean Gayle, it is sprinkle time for us too.... Halle is in heat, this is the only time he does it. I try not to get too upset, I know it's just him being a male:confused: I wish I didn't have any carpet too! Someday maybe we can replace it. For now I guess most of us just have to deal with at least a few rooms of carpet.

I wish I could blame Rowdy's sprinkling on a female in heat - but he just does it because he can!

I shampooed my carpets just the other day and I thought that they looked pretty good, but I bought one of those black lights...........................Let's just say that I'm shampooing AGAIN!!! I couldn't believe all of the spots!!!! Of course, they say that once they go you can never get it up so there's spots from when Reuger was a puppy. I actually had a recent spot and I worked on it and I couldn't begin to make a difference in how it looked. I'm hiding the light from Glen. He'll be really mad about all the spots! I'm still bummed about it!
We keep the door to Jaci's room closed but she still had spots all over the floor. I'm going to dig out a bunch of cleaners and see what I can discover. I may even order some that I've seen.
Janet, I bet your carpets smell nice and clean. I know that when I was there I couldn't believe how nice your carpets looked considering all of your dogs!!!

Janet, I'm sure you must be very happy to have things clean. Nothing beats a clean house!!
We clean our carpets very frequently, and can never get all the smell out of them. If anyone comes up with a product that will remove the odors, please let me know. It's embarassing. We steam clean with the additives for pet odor removal, and spray with Fabreeze for pet odors. It helps, but doesn't get all the odor out. I'm about to start crating our dogs again while we are at work. :(
I wanted to get rid of the carpet and put something else down, but we are getting our house ready to sell, so will probably just replace the carpet downstairs with new carpet and crate the dogs until the house sells. What a mess!!

I decided last night that I am going to rip out the carpets in my place!!! Layla has been having accidents again. We left her home on the weekend, with my brother coming over to feed her, let her out, and play with her for awhile. But when Scott and I got home yesterday we found 4 pee spots. I asked him to bring me the blacklight after I had put cleaner on them because I couldn't see where the last spot was. I haven't used the blacklight in my new place yet... well all I can say is
The carpet is a light color and everytime Layla pees, I can see the yellow spot. After cleaning it, the spot is gone. Well, the old owners didn't have a dog but they mentioned their son brought his dog over sometimes. I have a feeling that dog has peed on the carpets too, but the spots were cleaned so they weren't noticeable. They're definitely noticeable with the blacklight :( There's no way to get rid of those old spots... and that's probably the reason that Layla started using the carpets too, from smelling the old spots! :(

Sounds like I'm not the only one with pee spots. I honestly don't think I should get one of those lights. It would drive me insane...I just know it. The family room carpet looks really nice for the time being. I still need to do the living room.
The dogs are not allowed in the rest of the house, only the living room, family room and kitchen. They are crated at night and whenever we are gone. Joey is the only one not crated at night...he sleeps with me. Only one poos on a pad...the rest either go outside or anywhere. The boys wear belly bands so they don't have pee accidents, but the girls...they usually go really well on the pads, but sometimes get too close to the edge.
I would love to have a linoleum that looked just like wood. I would also like to have hardwood, but I'm afraid it would ruin the wood, plus, I wouldn't want it going between the wood.
Anyway...at least one room is done for awhile.

What are you using to clean your pee spots, Lindsey?
I am using Woolite OxyDeep for now. It works to remove the stain, but the protein and stuff is still there, so it still shows with the blacklight. I am going to borrow my mom's steam cleaner and I'll try the blacklight again after that to see if it helps at all.
My steps and the landing are still carpeted. Everything else is either laminate or tiles. Annie's pee pad is on the landing, only because she decided it would be so nice to pee on the carpet up there! I figured I might as well stick a pee pad under her butt when she does go up there.
It can really smell, especially when it's hot out. I have the cleaning woman wash the rug on the landing once/month with vinegar and Odoban. It masks the smell very nicely for a while. I don't want to redo the carpeting. They'll just pee on the new one! I may replace just the landing with laminate. I'm afraid to leave the steps uncarpeted. They would just be too slippery.
When I moved up here, I knew carpeting was out of the question!

Lindsey, I'm afraid that the spots will still be there even after you steam clean it. I just cleaned mine and the spots still shine.....unfortunately. It will drive me crazy!!! I shouldn't have bought the black light!!

lol! Scott said he got one of the spots completely out last night, but it was a fresh spot and after cleaning it didn't show up on the blacklight. I think after it's there for awhile it's too deep down to ever get clean.
Yesterday evening I tried getting Layla used to her room again (the laundry room). I kept her in there while I was cooking so I was still near, and she didn't seem to mind. Overnight, I put a tiny bit of water in her extra dish in my bedroom, and closed the door for the night. At 4 am, I woke up to her sniffing at the door and whining quietly. I took her to the laundry room but she didn't do anything. 10 minutes later she was whining again. This time I took her and put her gate up and left her for about 5 minutes... I came back and there was poop on her pad! I praised, praised, praised, gave her a treat, and we went back to bed. This morning I took her straight out to the deck and she peed on her pad out there :D I left her in the laundry room this morning so hopefully she's still there at lunch.
For the past week or so we've had so many pee spots overnight on the carpet right outside the laundry room (we gave her a little hallway between my room and the laundry room overnight, with the bedroom door open). So this is really a big improvement! I'm losing a little sleep definitely, but I think eventually she'll be able to hold it for the whole night. I just want to let her know now that if she DOES have to go, there's a right place to do it!

I keep Reuger and Jazzi in kennels during the night. They won't potty in the kennels and they don't wander around the house. I'm sure that they would both potty in the house if I didn't keep them in a kennel during the night. They both sleep right beside me. We tried letting Reuger sleep with the door open but he made noise running around the house. We all sleep better with them in the kennel and no accidents.
When we first got Jazzi we let her sleep in the bathroom but she whined and cried all night. When I put her in the kennel beside me she quit crying and sleeps really good. She always keeps me in her sights.
