View Full Version : The kids have swine flu!
Kassidy and Mackenzie have high fevers and Kass has it really bad. Brandon' is just beginning. Jessie has to take them to the doctor tomorrow. It's important to check their lungs for pneumonia. Kassidy was almost admitted to the hospital yesterday because her lungs were not testing well, but they didn't. Jessie has to keep a close eye on them.
I'm very worried about Jessie because, with MS, her immune system is not good.
I'm so afraid she will get very sick from it. I'm also worried about Kassidy. She only weighs 45 pounds, and that's soaking wet! She has tons of energy, but she is very thin.
They were here on Saturday, so I was exposed to it. Jess and I decided that I shouldn't come over today. I am going to call my doctor tomorrow and see what she thinks. My SIL is such an idiot! He wanted to know why I wasn't there today helping. I said "Because it's contagious." His response was that so what, he was there and so I should be too. I told him that Jess and I had discussed it and that she decided I shouldn't come. (which happens to be true).
I do have to be there soon anyway. One of the dogs is due to have puppies on Friday. One of the others is due next week! Tons of puppies!!!
If you could include Jessie in your prayers, and the kids too, I would really appreciate it.

Oh, Judy, so sad they are going through this, and will definitely be praying that they are all well very very soon and that you and Jess don't get it. Hope your SIL realizes that you and Jess have colaborated and are doing what is best. Take care and wish everyone well!!

I'm so sorry to hear this! My 13 year old g-daughter had it back in Sept - she had been over to our house too, just a day or so before she came down with symptoms - but thankfully, Gary (nor me) got it. My daughter and son-in-law got a very mild case of it, the 3 year old didn't get it, neither did my mom who lives with them. I have a theory about that.
I think some of us "old timers" had the swine flu (or were exposed to it and have antibodies) back in 1976. I had a horrible case of the flu in Oct. of 1976. That was the swine flu year. I didn't have it confirmed as swine flu (they didnt' do the test back then, they just assumed it was swine flu). I had just had my daughter and I was in bed for 2 weeks, when she was about 3 weeks old. I was nursing her, so my theory is that she had some antibodies from me in 1976 because although she had symptoms this Sept, they lasted only about 12 hours.
My mom may have had it in 76 too, and maybe Gary - cause there is some reason that they didn't get it this year as both were exposed.
Anyway, it can be nasty stuff - or not - I think there are a couple of strains of the swine flu going around - or maybe it has to do with old antibodies, who knows!
Judy I hope the kids are feeling better today, I will keep them in my prayers for a speedy recovery and that you and the rest of the family do not get it.. Your SIL isounds like a selfish man.. If he is not working then he is home and should be helping your daughter. He can't expect you to get sick your an older woman not right..

Well, this is pretty much what Jessie told him this morning when he was complaining about me not coming over!!! She told me that if she felt better, she really would have let him have it! She said to him, "Why should anybody have to come over? What are you planning to do to help me today, and if I really get sick, I hope you are planning to take care of me!!" She also told him tat she doesn't want me to get really sick since I am living by myself.
Steve's stepfather is there now to help with a new heating system, and now he has it!
My doctor told me not to go because it can be passed back and forth and nobody gets better. I have slight symptoms, but I am not worried yet. My doctor said that if I start feeling worse, to come right over.

So far we have been spared the flu here. I will be keeping you and your family in my prayers Judy. Don't delay seeing your Dr. if your symptoms get worse.
I think all us girls ought to come and kick Steve's butt! Doesn't he even think? We don't want you sick.

I'll go with you, Janet!
I'm sorry the kids are sick. Just the thought of the swine flue is a scary thing. Take care of yourself!
I think there is something to what you said Gail. I used to have "the grippe" whenever I got sick as a kid. That's what they called the flu back then. As an adult, I almost never get sick. I don't expect to let this swine flu slow me down at all.
I think I have a good amount of antibodies. We also weren't so concerned with picking up germs then. We got plenty dirty, touched everything, etc., and probably that's why we have all of these antibodies.

Take care of yourself Judy.
Hope the kids and Jess are feeling better real soon.
Mackenzie and Kassidy are much better. Brandon and Jessie are still feeling sick, but they got it a day or 2 later.
I'm going there tomorrow. I was already exposed, and I want to see them. Besides, the guilt is killing me!

I'm glad to hear that the kids are feeling better. I'll be praying for them anyway. You were right to not go over when the kids were sick. When you're older you have to take care of yourself and that means avoiding sick people. Your SIL was probably only thinking of himself when he made those comments. Men don't like to tend to sick people.
We went trick or treating yesterday, in the rain. I didn't think it was a good idea, but I kept quiet. Jessie wanted them to have their Halloween. She called me this morning to please come over again. Her chest is hurting, so I'm going to hang out with the kids so she can get some rest. Steve and his stepfather are redoing the heating system, and Dennis lives in Staten Island. He can't stop working to watch the kids.
She is prone to pneumonia. It seems that once you get it, you are susceptible.
I am hoping she gets better soon!
Please send up some prayers for her. Thanks!

I'm glad the kids are getting better, but I'm with you...don't think being out in the rain was a good idea. Hopefully they'll continue to get better. I know how you worry about Jessie so I'll keep her in my prayers. Be sure and take some of the soap stuff to keep your hands clean...don't touch your mouth or eyes okay? You stay well Judy!
