I woke up this morning to the radio saying it was -37 degrees (-34.6 F) and the radio announcer was telling the woman who called in that she should probably just stay home for the day because it was nasty outside! I have to say the thought crossed my mind! I decided to run outside to start my car about 20 minutes before I left so it would be relatively warm (I need to get my command start fixed!) and then realized I haven't even plugged it in yet this winter, I don't think it's going to start! I got a little excited thinking about going back to bed for the morning :D But after a few engine turnovers, it started :( By the time I left for work it was -38 degrees, but I did make some hot tea to warm up.

Well, at least winter arrived in time for Christmas! Now I'm looking forward to Mexico in February :D

Lindsey, I just can't imagine living in a place that is that cold!!! And I think that it's cold here!!! Of course, we have a real humid cold. When we used to go snow skiing the cold wasn't so bad because it didn't have the humidity with it. Do you know what I mean?

Lindsey

Yes, I've experienced humid cold too and it's so much worse because it just gets into your body and you can't shake it! This weather really wouldn't be so bad if we were eased into it lol. We had the hottest September in history and broke a lot of records in November too. We got our first snow to stay only last week. Usually snow stays in October! This just came out of nowhere last night. I was shocked when I heard that temperature on the radio!

Lol I just have to add... the nice thing about it being this cold is that Layla's feet stay much cleaner! She has a pee pad on the deck just outside the sliding glass door, but now as soon as the pee hits the pad it instantly freezes and doesn't run under her feet anymore :D

Lindsey! It's -26 C here (or -15F). So not as bad as where you are! Ugh. I am happy that snow will be here for Christmas too. We had mounds and mounds of blowing snow here. So much that roads were and still are, totally impassable. In the North Calgary is basically buried in a metre and a half of snow.

Keep Warm!!!

Lindsey

Wow Maddie! We only have about 6 inches of snow right now, and the roads haven't been bad at all! It's up to -27 degrees now. Drive safely if you have to go out!

Thanks for converting the temp for us, girls! Saves my old brain from over-exertion:D
My brain does not comprehend cold like that. We have wet cold here...when it gets cold!

Lindsey

-40 with windchill this morning! That's an easy conversion :) -40C = -40F :D

Oh my do not think I realize how cold it is gonna be coming to Whistler for Christmas :snowman:. Have been busy packing this morning think I need a few more jumpers. We are 11c today going to 6c tonight so think I am in for a very big shock.

Lindsey
12-08-2009, 07:14 AM
It may be a little colder than you're used to! :) But don't worry, it's not as bad as here in the prairies. Right now, Whistler is only -15 with a high of -9 today. According to the forecast, it should be around the 0 degree mark around Christmas.

OK...what is poutine?

Lindsey
12-08-2009, 08:09 AM
Lol... poutine is very Canadian. It's fries with cheese curd and gravy. It probably sounds pretty gross but it tastes great :D

MaddieBoo

Poutine = amazing.

I thought they had it in the states too?? They certainly should :P

That's what I was wondering, Betsi. Lindsay, what is in the gravy that you put on the fries.

Lindsey

Lol nope! That's another thing I've found from traveling in the states... you don't eat gravy on fries!!! It's just what you make with turkey or chicken or roast beef or whatever, but on fries :) And for poutine, add cheese to it! Delicious! You guys all need to come up to Canada and try some of this cuisine :D

We got snow this morning and it is so pretty, but before long it will be a muddy mess!
I love the first snowfall, we have deer that come in our yard in the morning. I should try to get a picture, it would be awesome. I made pumpkin bread this morning and it made the house smell so good.

I would love to see the deer!!!

OHHHH, Lindsay, I just don't know about gravy on fries - mashed potatoes yes, fries, I'm just not so sure about.

YES Maddie, chili cheese fries are GREAT - and NO, there are no calories! ;)

Y'all are crazy!!! Poutine sounds interesting. It's wild what different countries put on fries. In Belgium they eat mayonnaise and fries & they have different flavored mayonnaise's. We sometimes dip fries in gravy when we eat a steak finger basket at Dairy Queen, so I guess it could be good with some kind of cheese. I'd definitely be game to try if I ever get back to Canada. Been their twice, but it's been 24 years since the last visit. A friend moved to Calgary earlier in the year. All she talks about is how beautiful it is and how happy she is. Never mentions the cold, though I've ask her about it.

Calgary is beautiful! I'm stuck out here in Saskatoon with no mountain views lol. Marilyn, if you go to Calgary to visit your friend, I'll drive down to see you :D

Stay warm, drive safely, and bundle up!!!

We have had the same weather pattern, BUT add about 60 degrees F! It was also the warmest October and November in ????. Then, it snowed last week big time, and has been cold since. It's 30 degrees F today. I guess you guys would go sunbathing in this weather!

Last night we got down to -35C (-31F). Brr!

Not feeling so beautiful here in Calgary about now. Especially the roads :(

However, I will say that I love a cold, snowy Christmas. And Christmas baking day. Makes everything seem cozy inside :)

We made it there and back home safe! It was soooo cold though. They have a lot more snow than we have, and the highways were pretty icy. There were quite a few tracks into the ditch. We made sure the car was packed with blankets before we left, just in case. Most of Saturday was spent shopping, and walking from the parking lots into stores was terrible. I couldn't even keep my eyes open!

By the end of the week it's supposed to be nice again, around -5C (23F).

Judy, in the fall it seems really cold when it's around that temperature, but after a long cold winter, as soon as it gets above the 0 degree mark I can go outside in a t-shirt no problem lol.

Maddie, I feel the same way about cold snowy Christmases! As long as I don't have to be outside :D

You do acclimate! I run around without a coat when it's in the 40's, and even (very) high 30's. Once it gets down to close to freezing though, out comes the jacket. I would not dream of wearing my down coat yet though. It's way too hot!

Stay warm!!!
