View Full Version : White-out!!!

Oh my gosh the weather is just terrible! There are white-out conditions, highways are blocked off by police, the winds are so bad that the snow is blowing totally horizontally. It's not that cold, just hovering around freezing, but it's so dangerous to be out there with no visibility.

My brother has already asked my dad not to come into the city tonight, since travel is not advised around his area. As far as I know, those highways are still open, but I'd rather him be safe! It's really going to put a damper on our moving weekend since it will still be snowing tomorrow, and we are renting a moving truck starting at 7:30 tomorrow morning (thinking everyone would be in tonight!) And hopefully the highway to our new house will be okay...

I just knew something like this would happen :( Actually I thought it would be cold and rainy. A blizzard didn't cross my mind.

How disappointing. I'm sorry that you're having miserable weather....especially with you trying to move. I hope that it gets better so you can have a good time moving! At least this will be a memory of your first day in your new house......just think......tonight you could be in the hot tub!!!!!

Thinking of you this morning Lindsey. Sure hope the weather calmed down enough for you to get moved without any difficulty. Stay safe in that snow.

Well, we got moved!

Actually on Friday night we went to look at a brand new dining set that someone had just bought from an expensive furniture store, but decided to move to Montreal at the end of the month. So this set was worth about $2000 and they decided to sell it for $500. We bought it immediately! The leather seats on all 6 chairs were still covered in plastic!

On Saturday morning we dropped off Layla at my grandma's house, picked up the moving truck, and picked up the dining set. Then we headed back to the condo and got a few things loaded before my uncle and my cousin's husband showed up. So they got most of the big stuff moved. My uncle said he heard travel was still not recommended around my dad's area so we weren't sure if he'd be there in time. My dad finally showed up and said conditions were terrible until about an hour out of the city. He was in 4 wheel drive for the whole trip and it took about 3.5 hours instead of 2.5. My brother was supposed to come but at the last minute his girlfriend decided she needed the SUV for the day and so he needed to be picked up  Of course she needed it at the last minute!

We got a ton of stuff into the house, and Scott's parents came and his mom cleaned the kitchen before I unpacked things, and that was really nice because it was pretty disgusting! We went back into the city and Scott and I bought pizza for everyone who helped. My brother's girlfriend showed up for pizza too, because it turns out she decided not to actually go anywhere that day and just stayed at home with their vehicle. Shaun could have used it after all.

Then we picked up Layla and headed back. SHE LOVES THE HOUSE! I thought we'd block her off in one area but I don't think we even need to. We put one pad by the back door and without fail, she has used it every time. Even in the middle of the night the first night, she went all the way downstairs to pee! I am so happy! I shoveled off our back deck yesterday and she was ripping around the yard like crazy :) And last night there were a bunch of kids in the neighborhood playing on the street and she was right at the fence barking her little heart out :D

Last night Scott asked if I had a white sheet, so I pulled one out and he hung it from the ceiling in the top room. Then he set up his projector and we sat in our papasan chairs and watched a movie. It was awesome! I think we will be buying a pull-down screen for that area.

Anyways, we are very very very happy and I don't think it's really hit me yet that the house is OURS!

It sounds like home already, Lindsey!!! I can't wait for you to get everything in it's place and take pictures!!! Wish that I could come and see it in person!!!

I can't wait either lol!

And if you ever want to come see it in person, ANY of you, our doors are open! I would just recommend coming in the summer time! I don't know how many are willing to brave -50 degree temperatures in the winter ;)

It sounds so wonderful Linds! Congratulations to you, Scott and Layla on your new home!

Tell Layla we are very proud of her (except Max who says she should not get you used to her behaving so well). Annie thinks she is doing beautifully!

Sorry moving day was a blizzard. Saskatchewan sure has a lot of weather!

Thank you Judy!

Yeah you could say that again! The day before it was warm enough to wear shorts and no jacket, and the next day, blizzard! I just found this video, I'm not sure if you'll be able to see it...

Those were the conditions on Friday afternoon. Terrible!

The same day, winds were so strong in Scott's hometown that they had to evacuate a downtown building because it was swaying in the wind, up to 18 inches at the top  And people were getting nauseous from the movement. Here in the city, a roofer was blown off a 3 story roof while trying to fix damage from the wind (not exactly a smart move)... He survived and is in hospital. Unfortunately, one woman was killed when a small shed type building on skids blew over and squished her between it and her car

I'm so glad you guys got moved Lindsey! It does sound like that it feels like home to ya already. That's just wonderful! I'm so happy for you and Scott. And it sounds like Layla is making herself right at home. Good girl Layla!:D Can't wait for pics:p

By the way, you did get an awesome buy on that dining set. Congrats!:)

Lindsay! I can't believe you are all moved, that is just too cool for words. I'm so happy that Layla feels at home. You know, dogs know much more than we do about our environment. I think that is a very good sign!

I spoke too soon! Yesterday she had pooped in the living room! I wasn't too upset about it though, because she had used her pad to pee on all day :) And so far she's doing WAY better than when we first moved into the condo!

I felt so bad for her leaving her there all day because we were quite late getting home last night (stopped at a hot tub store to ask about chemicals, stopped at the condo to load the car with more stuff, went grocery shopping) so she must have thought we were never coming back! But I found her vibrating with excitement at the top of the first set of stairs :D I think she slept all day.

Awww! What's sweeter than coming home to a yorkie?

Lindsey
04-14-2010, 06:18 AM
Maybe coming home to more than one? :) We're considering maybe getting a second dog after we're more settled. It would be nice to have some company for Layla during the day, if we can find a dog that's suited well to her personality.

I fell in love with a little rescue dog I found on Petfinder. She's a yorkie mix and a special needs dog since she has had hip surgery. But she is very very submissive, which I think would be great for Layla since she gets upset when other dogs get right in her face and all she wants to do is hide behind me!

Isn't she adorable??? She is located quite far from me, but only about a half hour away from my best friend, who is now pregnant and also just bought a house :) So we will be going to visit her and her husband in the next few months and if this little dog is still there I think we will also be going to see her!

Aww Lindsey! She is just adorable and I love her name. I hope you get her.:)

Thanks! I hope so too! I will be sad if she's gone before we can see her, but at least she'd be in a good home which is better than a shelter. I don't know of any dogs with the surgery she had, but I did a little bit of research and it seems like she would be okay. I worry with all the stairs in our house!

She is a real cutie pie Linds, and needs a good home. Good luck! Layla would love her!

Lindsey

I thought so too! I did email about her yesterday and they told me their dogs absolutely do not get trials :( Every shelter or rescue around here will do a trial but this one won't. So we'll need to be 100% sure that she will do well in our family before we get her. So it's something to think about!

On another note, I ABSOLUTELY love my new town!!! Yesterday it finally stopped raining and snowing and the sun started shining! So after work I put on my flip-flops and hauled the patio furniture out of the garage, and ran around the yard with Layla for a little while. Scott tried out our underground sprinklers in the back yard and got them working. Then we took Layla for a walk! We saw a few families out walking and everyone cheerfully said hi to us. We wandered downtown and read the "Heritage Building" signs on almost every building. They've all been there since the early 1900's! Even all of the churches are very old. The United Church downtown is the most beautiful! There was also a Roman Catholic church and an Anglican Church (the smallest of the three... figures because I'm Anglican lol!) And we decided that maybe when we get married we'll just do the ceremony there and have it small with close friends and family, and then do a reception in the city so more people can come and have hotels to stay in :D Anyways, it was just great to imagine our whole lives playing out there!

On our way home it was getting dark and we could hear the owls calling :) Little things like that make me feel so much more at home than I was in the city! I think I was smiling all night!

I'm so happy for you Lindsay! Your new home sounds just perfect! I love hearing happy endings to stories!

How far is it to drive to work? I don't remember your mentioning how far you have to drive each day. I hope it's not far and/or doesn't take long. Is the traffic bad at all?

I'm sorry to hear about the shelter not doing a trial. THat just doesn't sound very practical.

Lindsey

The drive is about 20 minutes to the edge of the city, and then about another 10 minutes to my work, and then Scott drives from here to his work which is about another 10 minutes away. However, to make things easier I just applied for a job at the same office he works at (I know I know, we just tried to get away from that, but we'd still be working for different companies and on different projects!) So I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but how much good luck can one person have?? Lol

A couple of people stopped by yesterday while we were raking the yard! One was an older woman named Grace who lives across the street from us in a seniors home. She was so friendly and gave us her room number and said she'd love to have us over anytime we want to stop by! And the other person was an older man who lives in the house behind us. He was really friendly too! I can't wait to meet more of the community!

Thanks :)

Maddie, I saw how bad Calgary got hit! Aren't you just sick of it? Lol I hope now spring is here to stay. It's been around 20-25 C here too in the last couple of days. I actually got a tan raking the yard on Sunday afternoon! And Layla sends Lucas puppy smoochies right back :D

Yesterday we played in the yard with Layla for awhile before taking her for a walk "downtown" (down our street haha) to pick up our mail. On our way back, Scott was holding Layla's pink leash that was attached to her pink vest harness, and as we walked by the seniors centre (where they get together to play cards and things) an old woman called to Scott "I think that might be too much dog for you" Lol! I am just loving that everyone is so open and everyone says hi or waves when they pass. In the city it took us 6 months just to say hello to our neighbors and we lived in the same building!

Don't you just love small town life?

LOVE IT! I can't wait to have a family there! Everyone asks us if we have kids lol. Grace from across the street said "I always thought this would be a perfect house for 6 or 7 kids to be running around" haha I just said "Well, we don't have any YET, but someday!" :)
