I got a letter from the IRS today, which is never a good thing. They want $800 and something dollars because my income was under reported in 2008. ???????

I need to find my accountant, whoi is probably on vacation. I will have to pay it out. That's a lot of $!!!

I really could just send in the form to make a payment plan. I doubt that they made a mistake, but I have to dig around for the accountant to be sure. What a waste of time.

I don't want to pay them $800!!!:mad::mad::mad:

I wouldn't pay them anything until you get in touch with your accountant Judy. They could have made a mistake. I would let your accountant look over your 2008 return to make sure first. That is alot of money.

I'm with Paula on this one Judy. I wouldn't pay it either until it all checked out out.

Please double check before turning anything in. If there's a dateline I believe you can call and change it. I hope it was an oopsy :(

Judy, I used to hate that IRS on the envelope too - it was never anything good. But then my husband went to work for them in 1987 (he was in security and construction, NOT taxes) and so I had to get used to getting mail from them all the time. All employees are audited every year, so your taxes had to be perfect. He worked there 15 years and we didn't have any tax "oops".

Hopefully, something is just recorded on the wrong line or added incorrectly. I sure hope you don't have to pay $800. If you do, just set up a payment plan and get it over with. I bet your accountant can figure out the mistake (on their part!)

My accountant said it does look like I owe it, but to check with the Dept of Ed to be sure that they really sent me the extra $. I think I do know what happened, but have to look at my 2009 return to see if I paid it there. I thought of it after I spoke to my accountant.

It was a retroactive pay raise that the union fought for and won.

So, you probably paid the taxes on it the next year! I hope that's what happened!

I made a few phone calls, spoke to the nicest people, who directed me to the W2 office that sent out the form. I called, but could only leave a call back message.
I'll try again today, because they haven't called back yet.

Hopefully they will tell you that it is just a mistake!

Isn't it awful when they don't call back? It gets so frustrating when you're trying to find out something. I hope you don't have to pay anything Judy.

It is awful because she didn't call back today either! Now, I may have to begin stalking her. Boo!

Sorry, Judy. That's a bummer! Usually when we get something that says we owe more money our tax guy straightens it out. Hugs!

I do have to pay:( I got in touch with the last person, the one who didn't call me back, and it was vacation pay. I am going to send in the form to IRS disputing part of it, because I had to pay back the DOE for sick days. (I went over the allowed amount). You never can tell.

Either way, I will pay it out and forget about it. I'll figure that it's going to a family that is out of work, and it is helping them out with food, etc.

The woman who didn't call me back told me that they are not allowed to make calls out of NYC!!! That's why she didn't call me back. She said, "You know how it is to work for the City!" I do know, and we just laughed.
