I think the end may be near for my mom's doxy. He is 14 years old and the love of her life. She will be so sad when he is gone. He has a spinal fusion 8 years ago. He was paralyzed in the back legs, but regained the ability to walk.

He is having diarrhea with some blood.

Mom took him out at 4:00AM and by noon today he had not barked to get out of his crate (his most beloved place) to go out again.

Mom called Brooke and I to come back to the house to look to see if he was dead - she said she just couldn't look.

He was alive but covered in poop with some blood. I cleaned him up and took him to the vet. The vet said it could be the beginning of organ failure - but maybe just a gut inflammation, and gave him some gut soothing meds, an antibiotic, and some pills to control the diarrhea. If he's not better by Friday, then we have to take him back.

He ate when we got him home, so maybe this is just a gut problem - but he is not in good health and I know the end is not too far away.

My mom will be so devastated.

Gayle, I hope your mom's dog will be ok and is around to give your mom comfort for a long time yet.

That makes me so sad Gayle. I hope he will be okay...he's lived a long life, but still...I hope it's a little longer.

This is so sad! I hope he gets better. I know if something were to happen to one of mine, I would be heart broken. I will say a prayer for him.

Oh how sad :( Dashunds are one of the best dogs in the world. I'm sure that your Mom will be so heartbroken when he's gone. He has lived a very long life though but it is hard to watch them go down hill at the end. Hugs to your Mom at this difficult time.

I'm sorry Gayle. My dad's shih tzu was so much company and comfort to him after my moms stroke and until her death. I'm sorry for your mom!

Oops! Forgot to update. He's doing good now. The shot and pills did the trick so it was probably just a gut upset.

Whew!! I'm glad to hear that he's better. I'm sure that your Mom is relieved. This little incident will hopefully prepare your Mom somewhat for what will eventually happen. It's so hard to lose pets that we've loved for so long. We have pets that we still talk about and miss even though they've been gone for years.

He's still doing pretty good - but, mom says he's getting her up 2-3 times a night to go out to potty. He's never done that before, so I'm sure that is not necessarily a good sign. Oh it's good that he gets her up and doesn't go in the bed, but not that he's having to get up so much!

Awww! At least they are still together. He sounds like a tough little guy.
