Well, summer has finally hit and the temps are supposed to be 100+ for the next week - probably longer. (sigh) We've enjoyed a relatively cool and wet summer so far, so I can't complain.

BAAAAWWWWAAAAHHHH! I AM COMPLAINING!

OK, now I feel better! :D

Janet

I know a little of what you mean Gayle. We had such a long stretch of temps in the 90's and high humidity. Then we had a few days of decent temps and lower humidity and now it's back up again. I don't do well when it's this hot.

Really hate to say this, but I'm ready for fall.....NOT WINTER....just fall and those cooler evening temps.

gja1000

It was 99 when I left work today at 5:00, but it didn't really feel that hot - till I turned the corner to walk to the parking lot and that HOT wind hit me. Hot wind means the temps are really high. However, in the shade of the building it didn't feel that bad. The high was supposed to have been 103 and the sites I checked for temps did not get above 99 and now it is only 98!!! YAY!

We were 104* today!!! Hot.....Hot!!!! Of course, we always have high humidity with it so it's even worse. UGH......I'm planning on just staying in the pond!!!!!

gja1000
08-02-2010, 07:20 PM
I would just have to set up shop in the pond if it were 104 with humidity! Goodness!!!

I'm surprised as much as you love to swim Diana that you don't have a nice inground pool, that's even heated so you can swim way into the fall. :)

It has been nice and cool up here, but today is hot and sticky, with threats of tstorms. We have rain almost every day up here on the mountain, but we almost always get a couple of hours of sun. It also keeps the flowers watered!:)

Nights get nice and cool, which is just wonderful. I remember my apartment in Brooklyn being hot and sticky from May through September, with very little relief.

Of course, we won't even discuss our winter weather!!!:(

I would love to but the decision is Glen's. We've talked about it but the only place to put it is the front yard and we have all kinds of lines and stuff running though the front yard.....plus we have soooo many trees. Keeping one clean would be really hard. We do have a friend that has a heated pool and we're welcome to go there any time. Believe me, I've tried my best!!!!

It was been so hot and humid that we are under a heat warning for the last couple of days and will continue to be in one until 8 o'clock Friday evening. I need a break so bad. How are the rest of you coping.

gja1000
08-12-2010, 04:41 PM
Janet, it is just awful here too. I don't think though, that our humidity is as bad as yours, and humidity makes it so much worse. It is at least 100 every day.

We just stay in as much as possible. We have been working outside a bit on the gutters, but not until about 8:00PM and only for 30 minutes to an hour, and it is completely shaded where we are working. We also have ceiling fans on the porch where we are working and I set up a big wind machine fan also, so that when we get real sweaty, we can stand in front of the fan and cool off some.

My poor yard, flowers and garden are really suffering. We'll be hot like this for another month, at least. Then it will cool off into the low 90's for another month. Late Oct. and November are when we have decent weather. The only saving grace is that this really hot weather didn't start till late July. Sometimes it starts the first of JUNE!

Janet, do you have air conditioning? I can't remember:rolleyes: It's awfully hot and humid here, too.

gja1000
08-29-2010, 08:26 AM
We had a week reprieve of temps in the lower-mid 90's and low humidity. It felt wonderful! But we are supposed to have higher humidity this week with temps in the high 90's and it will feel awful, I'm sure! It may rain though, the higher humidity is caused by gulf moisture, so even a little chance of rain is good. Soon though, we will get out of this intense heat/humidity!

We've been having some really nice weather. The mornings and evenings are really nice out but mid afternoons are still a little warm. You can definitely tell that fall is not too far away. We always start cooling off the end of August and by the middle of October the furnace is turned on.

We are having some very nice days now. It's in the 60's, some days hit 70. It rains almost every day, but that is always. As long as it gets sunny for part of the day, it is really nice now. Nights are chilly - last night was in the 40's. Very good sleeping weather! In the evening though, I do have to use my space heaters and bundle up.

No complaints here!

It's been in the 80's here, but very low humidity so it's been really nice. We need rain so bad....everything is so dry. Hoping a good rain storm will come through on Sunday like predicted.

gja1000
09-17-2010, 08:55 PM
We got about a third of an inch of rain today - but it didn't really cool anything down. The long term forecast shows us in the 90's into next week, then some 80's (fingers crossed).

judy
09-18-2010, 05:36 AM
We're going to go into the mid 70's up to 80 tomorrow! I'm going to try to get to sit by the pool. The pool is covered, but it is beautiful up there, and the hose is still on if it gets hot.

I wish I could send this weather out to all of you! But, then, in winter, you have to send me yours!

gja1000
09-19-2010, 12:46 PM
Well, the weather today messed up Gary's fishing trip - but that 's OK, I guess. We need the rain! It's not here yet, watch, it will miss us!

Janet
09-19-2010, 03:19 PM
We're needing rain here real bad too...everything is really dry. I'm anxious for a good ole thunderstorm. It's been in the 80's here and on Tuesday we're expected to get a high of 93 and then stay in the 80's until the weekend....then a drop into the 70's for the high. I hate wishing time away....the dryness is getting old. Suppose to rain later in the week and I'm looking forward to it.

gja1000
09-19-2010, 05:45 PM
We were 71 here this evening, so I got out and worked in my little corner of the yard some more. I'm putting down some stepping stones on the other end with river pebbles between the stepping stones. It was so nice and cool, but the humidity is so high (the rain is all just to the south of us, none here today) that I was sweating (just a little) by the time I got finished. I ran out of pebbles though, gotta get some more at Home Depot tomorrow.

It is coooold here! Way below normal. We've had freezing nights for the past week so I got most of my garden out just in time. I have carrots left that I will pick this week. My poor peppers didn't get too far! They didn't even flower yet but now they're dry and black because of the frost!

It started raining yesterday and is supposed to continue for the next few days. I think next week is supposed to warm up a little bit. We barely got any summer this year!

We've had some strange weather in the U.S. this winter. I hope you all up north don't get too much more snow!

We have been in a moderately severe drought in central Texas this fall/winter. But we've had some nice rain lately. The past couple of days we've had an inch and a half of slow drizzle. It's the kind that all soaks in. YAY!

We have had a lot of rain in since yesterday. In fact, it hasn't stopped since yesterday morning. I think I brought the rain back from Seattle, lol! Except it mostly drizzles there. But like Gayle, we really needed it:)

Janet
01-17-2011, 04:06 AM
There has been some strange weather everywhere I think....rain/mudslides in Brazil, flooding in Austrailia. It's early AM and just can't think of the others right now.

Today we are expecting temps in the 30's, but later tonight rain moving in turning to sleet and ice. Hope it doesn't get too bad and then the temps are to drop into the single digits on Wednesday and Thursday.

My old bones just can't take much more of the cold so ....... COME ON SPRING!!

DianaB
01-17-2011, 11:26 AM
We still have snow on the ground. We turned off really cold after it snowed and so it hasn't had time to melt but today you can tell that it's finally leaving. The kids and Glen all went sledding the other day and had a blast. I copied some of Amy's videos on FB so you could see them!! I stayed in the house with Dean and made sure that I had hot water for hot cocoa and also made some no-bake cookies!!!

-31....how in the world can you stand that? You must have layers and layers of clothing, gloves, coats...etc. on. I would think it would be too dangerous to even venture out in case of car trouble or just whatever.

I definitely need to head south... :)

JJJ
01-18-2011, 10:08 AM
My heater get put on full blast when its 30 degrees outside. I cannot do cold, I put pantyhose underneath my pants, muscle shirt, rg shirt, thermal, sweater, windbreaker and long jacket to walk outside. When I get in my car I have to wait for my legs to stop trembling to be able to drive. I'm very small frame weighting 93-95 lbs so I guess that has alot to do with it. I just wish the wind wouldn't blow.

Lindsey
01-18-2011, 10:21 AM
Hahaha... okay I guess if any of you decide to come up here, come in the summer ;)

Really, after it gets to a certain point of cold, it never feels any colder lol. The difference between -25 and -30 or -40 isn't really noticeable. Sometimes it gets to -50 or colder with windchill, and the only difference is that your eyes start tearing and the tears immediately freeze to your face! If you blink, sometimes your eyelashes freeze shut LOL. I used to figure skate from when I was about 4 years old until I was 18. They were all unheated rinks and no matter how cold it was, I'd just be wearing my warm-up tights and skirt, a sweater, and some mini gloves. Years of that built up my resistance and my legs don't really feel cold much anymore.

We just keep blankets in the car, a charged cell phone, and winter tires are necessary! It's winter for basically 6 months here and life just goes on :) Unless I'm outside for a long period of time, like shovelling the driveway or going out ice fishing or snowboarding, I don't really dress up. I just wear normal shoes, jeans, t-shirt or sweater, and a jacket.

Lindsey
01-18-2011, 10:22 AM
Oh, but put me in a cool breeze on a summer day and I can't stop shaking! I guess it's the difference between "cool" and "cold". The "cool" bothers me so much more!

Wow Lynsey! That is some cold temps you guys have there. I guess you just get used to it like the people way down south get used to the heat lol!

Janet
01-18-2011, 03:26 PM
Well gee....I must not be much good for nothing...lol...I don't like it really cold, but I don't like it too hot either. How about mid 70's with a very light breeze and plenty of sunshine? That I can handle.

judy
01-18-2011, 04:12 PM
Sounds like perfection, Janet! A sweet ocean breeze wouldn't hurt either!

I have also gotten much more comfortable in the cold Linds. We are all so excited if it's in the high 20's, low 30's, and anything above 32 (Fahrenheit), is like summer! I would have to adjust a lot to your temps though!

What I don't like up here is that the sun doesn't shine in winter much. I have one of those lamps...maybe I'll use it. The good news is that it's already mid-January. Winter is over some time in April usually, with some sunny days earlier.

I am really confused about the weather all over the country. I listen to local TV, and it seems that it has been snowing all over the United States. I should listen better!

Spring will come, spring will come, spring will come:)

Lindsey
01-19-2011, 06:47 AM
Winter here is usually over around the end of April. Last year we had two blizzards in April, but it warmed up a lot in May. Our May long weekend (around the 20th) is the unofficial "go to the lake and open your cabin for the season" weekend. Usually the ice isn't completely off the lakes until the end of May.

I was surprised when our Arizona people at work were asking how much sunlight we have in the winter because I didn't realize it was so different! In the winter it gets light around 9 am, and dark again by around 5 pm. I spend all my daylight hours at work  It's dark when I come to work, dark when I leave work, and I have no windows! We don't have daylight savings in my province.

Janet
01-19-2011, 07:50 AM
We are under a winter storm watch for tonight and tomorrow I think it is...plus the temps are suppose to drop to the single digits. Just checked again and it's a winter weather advisory starting tomorrow and ending on Friday. Just great....just in time for the weekend...okay...that's all I'm going to complain about it...lol.

Lindsey
01-19-2011, 08:48 AM
We're finally breaking the -40 mark for a windchill of -41 tomorrow morning. I hate January! It's supposed to get above freezing on Sunday, and back down again after that. Oh yeah, -41 C = about -42 F

If it's going to be cold, I'd rather it just stay cold. When it warms up and starts to melt, it freezes again into ice :(

This morning it was -25 C (-13 F) and I was trying to pack the car while Scott was shovelling, but the doors were locked so I had to go find him. I am just wearing some knit leggings and it really didn't feel too cold out! I guess colder than -30 for a week really got me acclimatized lol!

Janet, at least if the winter weather happens on the weekend, you hopefully won't have to go anywhere!

It was BEAUTIFUL here yesterday too! It got up to about 5 degrees (41 F) and everything was melting! Unfortunately, we drove home around 7 pm when everything was freezing again! There were at least 6 cars freshly in the ditch in our 20 minute drive. One truck passed us, and not even 5 minutes later, we passed him, spun out in a ditch. It was GLARE ice! The ride to work this morning was really icy too, and most of the vehicles were still sitting abandoned in the ditches!

Like I said before, it's usually better if it just STAYS cold!!! The melting temperatures are nice for the time, but it makes things so much worse later :(

Janet
01-30-2011, 04:02 PM
We are under a winter snowstorm watch. Monday evening a major storm is predicted for us with ice and upwards of 10 inches. Mom doesn't want to be stuck in a hospital alone so it looks like I'm going to have plenty of time on the computer...I'll be staying with her if we get the storm. Also...IF something were to happen to her....I wouldn't want her to be alone.

We have a windchill warning in effect today. It's flippin cold out there! The windchill right now is -44 degrees Celsius, and exposed skin will be frostbitten within 10 minutes. Yes Gayle i am at home and the power is staying on, will update on the weather thread.

Janet, I'm sorry that your day is not getting off to a good start with the nurse. You DO have the right to demand a different nurse if you problems with one, same with Dr's if you have problems with them you can request (not demand, I should have put that instead of demand) a different one or that the Dr only see the patient when a family member is present if you are not comfortable with the way they are doing things. Remember they are working for you, and sometimes you have to shop around for the right one.

I hope everyone up north is warm and safe! It is butt cold down here (for us). Lots of frozen pipes around town, none for us, thankfully. People down here are just not used to this kind of cold weather. I've seen people walking around in sweatshirt hoodies as a coat. I imagine that's all they've got - it just rarely gets this cold for this long down here.

We actually had to buy Gary a new down coat. His was 25 years old (rarely worn so in good shape) but (ahem) it wouldn't zip. LOL! We stopped at a western shop and they had ONE black down jacket in extra large and it fit and it was on SALE! We were lucky because Gary has monkey arms (long arms) and sometimes shirts and jacket sleeves are too short for him. This jacket fit perfectly though.

We are supposed to have snow tonight and tomorrow - again, pretty unusual for us, although we had a dusting last winter too.

Everyone bundle up and stay warm!

Lindsey

LOL! Jessica, that's the way I feel - I can't get enough clothes on!

I just talked to my daughter and she is in Houston for the weekend. She said sleet was coming down and when I looked at the radar, sure enough, you can see sleet/snow in the Houston area. None yet here in Austin (fingers crossed).

Lindsay, that is too funny! My friend in Denver, Colorado said their high temp was higher than ours here in Austin and they don't have any chance of snow where we have a 50% chance! Go figure!

Lindsey
02-03-2011, 12:38 PM
Oh Jessica, be glad you live where you do because I don't think you could survive here :D

It's now +3 degrees C which is about 37 degrees F. I'm wearing a sleeveless knit sweaterdress with thin black knit leggings and boots... and this isn't even jacket weather! In just ONE DAY the temperature difference was about 40 degrees Celsius, and so about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. That temperature change is crazy!

We're supposed to dip back down way below freezing on Sunday... back to below normal temperatures.

Your weather is interesting Linds! I remember you wearing summer clothes and getting snow in the same day!

My weather is pretty much always the same. Snow, either in the morning, or all day. It has warmed up though, and the sun has been out for the past 3 days. That's the clincher up here. When days are dreary and grey for a week or so, everyone is miserable. When it is sunny out, you can see big smiles! I don't go out when it is below 15 - 16 degrees anyway, unless I absolutely have to.

Our roads are clear too, unless it is snowing heavily. I don't go out in that either, unless I must.

It is also so pretty up here, except that the snow has gotten that dirty look because it's just laying there for so many weeks. I do have to get my roof cleaned off again. I just had it done, but it can cause leaks down the walls!

Keep warm everyone, and stay safe!

Janet
02-04-2011, 06:19 PM
We haven't had school for 3 days but today we did...2-hour delay too. There is so much ice...3-6 inches of the stuff. Can't break it so everyone has to be very careful. Suppose to get more snow starting tomorrow....just what we need. I do not like snow or winter. I'm really ready for spring.

JJJ
02-04-2011, 09:28 PM

I just heard sleet, snow and some freezing rain. I am not going out! But..it will be in the low 30's, high 20's for the rest of the week, snow, snow and so on. That's fine! I think I have gotten used to winter here. People are talking about it being so snowy this January. I guess???? The thing is, it doesn't hinder us that many days. The roads are clean, and having the Subaru is wonderful!

Of course, the fact that I don't have to go out if the weather is bad, makes the whole situation so different. It's like I'm in a different movie than if I had to go to work!

What I wore to school today:

Knit pantyhose, knee highs, socks, pajama pants and jeans.

Muscle shirt, shirt, turtleneck, turtleneck sweater, hood sweater and long jacket.

Gloves on top of gloves and ear covers.

No joke, I can't stand the cold.

Could you move, Jessica? I picture you looking like the Michelin Man!!!

We were out of school for three days too and I really didn't think the kids should have gone back when they did. The roads are still not very clear to have the school buses out running. We're suppose to get more snow next week. I haven't heard if we're suppose to get much or not so I guess we'll see. We ARE having some really cold weather though......bbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

We were out 3 days last week too. When we went back on Friday...the roads were bad, but the buses handle it so much better than being in a car. Today...Rick and went to town. I needed to get the rest of Mom's meds and get a few groceries. We couldn't hard see all the way to town because of whiteout conditions. Even in town there were whiteouts.

We were suppose to get 2-4 inches of snow, but we got more like 6 on top of the 3 inches of ice/sleet and 3 inches of snow we already had. Monday they are calling for 1-3 more inches of snow. This has really got to stop....I'm not a snow fan as most of you know. I love being at home....but not being stuck at home.

Hopefully the roads will be cleared off quickly.

We've been nice and warm all weekend but are going into the deep freeze (for us) for a couple of days, then it is supposed to be nice by the weekend again. Our only problem is that we may have freezing rain tomorrow -hope not, as the Austin drivers are NUTS in the snow and ice!

Hope you don't get that nasty weather Gayle but I saw on the news earlier that you are supposed too........

Our nasty weather is supposed to come tomorrow. Hope it comes early enough so they cancel our 10:00 meeting, otherwise, I'll be at school when the ice comes and trying to get home while avoiding the CRAZY DRIVERS who will be trying to HIT my car!

Our weather is supposed to be like yours tomorrow Gayle. I'm supposed to get my eyes checked but I'm sure I'll cancel.
My bedroom is on the front of the house and I have 3 huge windows that face the road. The last time we had ice/snow I opened the blinds, piled up in bed with the dogs, and watched people sliding up and down the road:p It doesn't take much to amuse me. I just watched it snow and told the cars "slow DOWN, you're going to slide right in to my house":yelrotflmao:

If you're lucky enough to have a heated basement or crawl space that helps, otherwise...we just leave the doors under the sinks open and let the water just trickle enough to keep it moving.

I'm so excited...even though it's in the 30's for awhile...by next Friday...it's suppose to get up to 57 degrees. If it does.....I will be soooooo happy. I'm so ready for the snow to be gone.

The weather was gorgeous today - 70 degrees! Yesterday I cleaned out all the old plants from the garden at the new house. They had some blackberry bushes - the thorny kind. Gary was so happy to have berry bushes but the thorns were driving me crazy so I took them out and promised to plant some thornless blackberries. Well today we went to the Tractor Supply store (to find farmer Acton some overalls LOL!) and lo and behold, they had some bare root thornless blackberry plants. So I got six and planted them. I guess it's a good thing I cleaned out the beds yesterday and the weather was perfect for cleaning and planting!

we had rain, sleet snow yesterday, i'm so tired of it all. went to bed around 9:30 shortly after the phone rang, it was the sherrif so hubby had to leave to sand some roads, about 12:30 his cell rang i assumed he had gotten home so i didn't get up, well then the home phone rang so i get up looking for hubby and he wasn't here he had forgotten his cell phone (which he never does) so i answer the phone it's the sherrif office looking for hubby so i tell them he is out but forgot his phone, so they get him on the cb radio. he got home just shortly after that.
I had noticed when i got up at 12:30 that there was a car in the neighbors drive way running, didn't think anything about it, well after hubby got home it was still there running, about 1AM i here loud music, it's coming from the car geezz!!! hubby had to get up at 3:30 am to go back to work wich means i have to get up early to take care of the dogs and get myself ready for work. This is the way it has been for the past couple of months, i am so tired of interupted sleep because of this weather. I need spring to get here fast.

Oh Lynne, what a bummer. I didn't realize your hubby worked for the city, or county? I do understand that as I had some relatives growing up that did the same. Oh and I lived in Oklahoma where we had quite a bit of ice/snow every winter.

I'll be glad to give you some warm weather - it's been in the 80's for the past several days, had to run the AC in the house. Today was 65 where it is supposed to be this time of year - but it will be back in the 70's tomorrow and for the rest of the week. BLEH! I fear this means we are going to have an early and HOT summer. I hate the summer, just like you hate the winter; although I will say a hard winter is much more disruptive than a hot summer - so I guess I'll shut up now. :D

Janet
02-23-2011, 10:35 AM
We had a two hour delay yesterday morning due to the ice. Man....I really really hate winter! Today is cold, but suppose to get into the 40's and then.....Thursday evening 1-3 inches of ice/snow by Friday morning. Yuk...Yuk...Yuk!!!! Probably end up with another 2 hour delay on Friday....we'll see.

It rained and snowed here yesterday... I think it was around -15 degrees C. When I went outside after work, the doors of my car were frozen shut! I was finally able to get in my passenger door and throw my weight against the drivers side to open it! It was pretty icy on the roads too and I narrowly avoided an accident (turning my wheel so I could slide BESIDE a truck instead of into it!) and making me have to take a big detour because of it!

On the bright side, I saw the sunrise this morning. It's not pitch black on the way to work anymore. That means spring is coming! The snow should be gone by May... we're almost there!

I so agree Judy. Snow SUCKS big time. I'm really tired of it and I'm ready for spring. The humidity does get to me, but as long as there is no snow...I'm ready. I just need to spend more time near the water.lolol

Lindsey, the snow pictures were awesome!! I loved the one with the fog coming off of the lake too!! I can't imagine having that much snow during the winter!!

I bought a child's hoosier cabinet off of e-bay about a month ago and every time I plan to go and get it the weather has been bad. I've joked about leaving it there until summer and plan on going up when we're dry and needing the rain!!! LOL

We've had snow and a two thunderstorms now.....with one of them being tonight. We were even in a tornado watch. I don't like it when it's that time of the year.......I'm looking forward to the warm weather though so I can plant some flowers in the yard. Right now we are so muddy from the rain and snow. I'll be glad when it dries up!!!!

It was 84 here today and HUMID - just nasty! But, we are supposed to have a front tonight and get down to the low 40's and maybe only in the 60's tomorrow. I like 60's this time of year - NOT 80's.

I hope to plant my potatoes tomorrow - it was just too hectic to do it this weekend - but hopefully tomorrow will be quieter - probably not, but maybe I can get the potatoes in the ground~

DianaB
02-27-2011, 07:03 PM
Around here the time to plant potatoes is March 17th. You must be about 3 weeks ahead of us. I'm ready to get out and work in the yard. I may try to put in a small garden or work at Dae Lynn's on one. I think that the economy is going to make a lot of people put out a garden.

Gayle, how are you setting up your gardens in the new house? You really had it down in the last house. I'd love to see your set up now!

I'll have to take some pix of the garden areas in the new house. There is one garden that looks just like my garden at the old house. It's a 4X10 raised box. It is at the back of the yard by some really big hedge row bushes and the are FULL of birds which we love but we will have to completely cover the garden in netting or the birds will eat everything.

The other garden area is butted up next to the house. It is a nice space and gets lots of good sunshine. That is where I have my blackberry bushes, and where I will plant my potatoes. Actually, it would be better to plant the potatoes out by the birds, wouldn't it. They couldn't eat the potatoes, would they! LOL! I think I may do that.

I'll also plant some green beans because there are trellis in the garden out by the bushes. I want to try squash too. I have not had much success at the old house with squash but I am told it is because I don't have enough bees to polinate the squash blooms. So I'm going to plant blooming flowers all around the squash plants. I think I will have more bees out in the country house.

LOL! I guess I got off track on the weather thread. Moderators don't be too hard on me!!

So, to get back on topic, the cool front came through today and it is only 68 today. It feels cooler since there is a strong breeze. But there is lots of sunshine so it is a pretty day.

DianaB
02-28-2011, 03:21 PM
I was wondering if you were still doing your raised garden. I'd plant the potatoes further from the house......I don't think that the birds would hurt it.

We used to plant potatoes under straw. You just work the ground......cut your potatoes like you usually do and let them dry for a day or two.......then place on TOP of the ground and cover with lots of hay.....make sure you keep them watered. Then when you're ready to get your potatoes just pull the hay back and they'll mostly be on top of the ground. I don't think that they get quite as big but it's so easy to do. You could try just a small area and try it.......we always ended up doing some of both.

Squash is easy to grow but you really need to watch for squash bugs. They can be horrible. I don't know if you use any spray or gardening powder but you'll want to start treating for them fairly quickly. You may want to ask some other gardeners down there to see if they're a problem.

I know that there are companion gardening techniques. Planting two different things together to help each other out......and I want to say that you plant marigolds with squash plants to keep away the squash bugs. Here's a list that I found of companion gardening. If you look wayyyy down the list you'll find marigolds but there are many, many others too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_companion_plants

gja1000
02-28-2011, 05:48 PM
Someone sent me a link (not the one you sent) about companion gardening and yes, I think it was marigolds and zinnias to go with squash. It also said to NOT put potatoes and squash together. I was going to put them side by side, but guess I won't now.

Spring is in the air!!! Planting threads are so wonderful to read at this time of the year.

I am afraid we will never get spring! The snow is so high, keeps icing up overnight, and is dirty! We don't have dirty snow in the mountains!!!

Florida for a month in the winter sounds nicer and nicer. Maybe next year.

Here we generally plant gardens on May long weekend (Victoria Day - around May 24th for Queen Victoria's birthday). Sometimes there is still frost in the ground and gardens don't get planted until June. I usuallly plant tomatoes in May in planters and bring them inside overnight so the frost doesn't get them! I don't know what I'll do this year because we leave for Europe on the 24th of May!

It looks like March has come in like a lion this year, and hopefully will go out like a lamb! It's -40 with windchill today. My brother just got back from Jamaica on Sunday so this must feel way worse to him! My parents are enjoying the sunshine in Mexico.

As for myself, I'm sick with a cold so I'm taking my second day off work. I had planned to go in but Scott called me from Vancouver last night and said I don't sound well enough and I might as well stay home and not spread my germs to everyone else. I feel like I'm letting everyone down so I did let the office know I'll work from home and have one request to work on already.

There was a pretty bad blizzard yesterday, and by noon, all of the highways leading out of the city were deemed too dangerous to travel on. There was zero visibility. I'm glad I was sick or I never would have made it home!

DianaB

Judy, I bet that you are tired of the snow. I don't blame you for thinking about going to Florida for awhile during the winter.

Lindsey, sorry that you're still not feeling well. It's possible that your body is just worn out from all of your work. Having stress and being tired are two things that can lower your body's resistance to colds and stuff. Get some much deserved rest and take care of yourself!!!

I can actually see some grass on my hill, and my steps are pretty snow free! It rained, which got rid of a lot, but we also have big flooding problems in the area. I'm on top of a mountain, and don't get flooding...just more snow.

It's been getting above freezing the past couple of days here too! Yesterday the sun was shining and the streets were full of water from the melting snow! We got a ton of snow this year and the water table is really high too so there is the possibility of a lot of flooding if these temperatures keep up! The city has already hauled away the snow from the ditches and meridians. I hope spring is here to stay! With these temperatures, the snow could be totally gone in a couple of weeks!

We were halfway home from the city yesterday when we were hit by a blizzard with white-out conditions. Today, all highways into the city are not recommended for travel and Scott is trying to shovel 2 or more feet of snow from the driveway so we can hopefully leave the house tomorrow! I'm doing some work from home, some laundry, and hopefully later some baking! Tomorrow we're heading to the lake so I hope the roads are okay. My mom said they still have tons of snow out there, although they didn't get the blizzard we got last night. Lindsay, what are you going to do at the lake in the snow?

ICE FISH!!! :D There's only two more weeks left until the shacks have to be removed from the lake and I haven't been out yet this year at all! My dad built a pretty nice ice fishing shack a few years ago :) We have padded seats on both sides and a little wood stove in the corner so it stays nice and warm. He said this year he also took our old barbeque out there to make food so it's nice to spend a whole day out there.

We used to just use those black tents and I'd last maybe an hour at the most without running to the truck to warm up  But it really does get warm in the new place!
