Sorry but i would have to move !!! Do you have people that come out and spray like Orkin around you area? I loved them but had to give them up...

I use to till I found out that what they were spraying didn't leave any kind of a residue. So then we started to spray the house ourselves. So far so good!

As far as I am concerned the only kind of good spider is a DEAD spider! :D There isn't a thing that I want to learn from them! LOL:)

I have a friend who swears if you put a few, I think they are called hedge apples, in your basement your home will be spider free.

They are big green gnarly looking things.

We call them "writing spiders" because they make a heavy zigzag pattern in their web usually near the center, like it's their signature or something. They will stay for several days if their web is not disturbed, and they catch lots of bugs. We leave them alone unless they decide to make a web over the front door or something. I've gone to leave in the morning and there was a spider web across my path.

Melissa had one on the canopy of the RV she was living in and she enjoyed her pet until someone did her a favor and removed the web while she was in class one day. They, too, are interesting to watch.

May have to catch me a Black Widow, Diana, but hubby would probably have a fit!!;)

Maryilyn, we have those spiders here in pa but we call them banana spiders, you find them in your garden they like to make there webs around the corn, i remember as a child running thru the garden and i ran right thru one of there webs and that spider was smack on my face... i flipped out....

O my, the same thing happened to me as a child. I don't know if it was in the corn field, but probably was. We had corn in front of our house most years, and yes, the spiders did make their webs in the corn.

Banana spiders may be their name. I'm not sure. Writing spiders is just what we called them because they write in their web. So cool that we share that experience.

EEKKK! We shared a scary experience, i'm not sure if that is there name, they have two yellow marks on both sides of there bodies, that look like banana's that's why we called them that, i still remember that day, my brother was tormenting me like he always did chasing me, and i ran right into it. and you are also right they sit right in the middle of there web, and he smacked right in the middle of my face.. YUk...... scared the crap out of me.. just to feel that web on my face and the spider on my nose.... YUK.....

Marilyn 07-22-2008 08:06 AM

They will get your attention. In my case, it wasn't exactly on my nose. I was freaking out trying to find it with their strong sticky web everywhere. Finally flung it on the ground. Maybe that is why I'm not scared of spiders, but do freak out when one gets on me. The thought of them crawling on me is just totally creeps me out!!!! I get the heeby jeebies just thinking about it.

We call them Garden spiders. Here's a picture of one with the zigzag pattern on it's web. They're pretty harmless and do a great job of eating bugs.

Shada, I've heard of putting hedge apples around to keep out spiders. We've got plenty of them around so I should put some in the basement. Thanks for the reminder!

Dobie 07-22-2008 08:39 PM

We put up a few bat houses in our back yard, hoping that takes care of any spiders back there.

DianaB 07-23-2008 11:58 AM

I don't know about spiders but bats will take care of mosquitos and flying insects.

AngieDoogles 07-25-2008 05:38 PM

Okay, I just have to add to this thread. I am in complete agreement with all of you other spider haters! I am a member of a photo forum and today I opened a thread and it was photos of a spider killing and eating a bee! It was hairy and gross and ALBINO! It was awful. I had to close the thread quickly...I might have nightmares now! YUCK!

Like Diana and marilyn, spiders don't bother me unless they're crawling ON me. Now bat... are a whole different matter. If see a bat swoop by I run and scream like a little kid.

My hubby is terrified of snakes. Doesn't matter if they're 4" long, he kills them on sight. I haven't told him yet that our nasty neighbors have a 12' boa in their house. He'd move!
This is the snake the neighbors have... photo taken a couple years ago so he's grown since.

Attachment 3853 If tht thing ever gets out my poor hubby will end up dead from a heart attack or in jail for having shot it.

Emmsmom 07-26-2008 06:29 AM

My hubby would be the same way! He was in the Marines and had a really nsaty run in with Rattlesnakes while rock climbing. Now he hates them all! Can't really blame him tho.

Dobie 07-26-2008 06:37 AM

I don't have an issue with bats or snakes, but I think chicken's are the scariest animal ever created! The look absolutely evil, like they are always plotting a way to peck your eyes out.

I won't go anywhere near one - as a kid I used to run out of petting zoos screaming if I saw one.

Marilyn 07-26-2008 10:39 AM

Dobie, that's a strange fear. I haven't heard of that one before. Nothing wrong with being afraid of chickens. Don't think you have to worry about running into one in your normal day to day life. Any story behind that fear??
