Wow, Janet!!! Yesterday, I saw Shell at $3.71. I waited until I got to Corpus Christi to fill up because it's usually about 10 cents lower at the Valero stations near the Valero Refinery. Well, not this time. I paid $3.699.

Hubby talked with a guy who works off shore reading oil pressures and the pressures are really high right now on the platforms which means there is lots of oil in the Gulf. Lots of oil, no problems at the refineries right now, lots of supply, lots of demand. I don't understand why prices are going up so much. They are saying the Sauds are raising them. Why do we have to follow suit when we have lots of oil right here???? and can make it into our own gasoline!?

gja1000 05-15-2008 06:45 PM

Hi Marilyn,
Part of the problem is that U.S. are refineries are not up to speed - there hasn't been a new one built since the 1970's and the ones we have are old and antiquated. I'm not sure why they have been allowed to go downhill. It means though, that even if we step up oil extraction in the U.S., we can't refine enough to make much difference.

Another thing contributing to the high price of oil is the weak dollar - so we have to pay more dollars for the same amount of imported oil - even if they weren't raising the prices - which of course they are - but the weak dollar means we are paying more of them for oil. The weak dollar is tied to the national debt, which is quite high now.

I've been told that commodity trading of oil on the stock market has created a "middle man" is also contributing to the rise in gas prices. I don't understand that one though, maybe someone can explain it to me.

Lindsey 05-15-2008 07:00 PM

I filled up my car today. I drive a cavalier which has pretty good gas mileage and a pretty small gas tank. It wasn't even empty and it cost me $63. That's pretty insane! This weekend is a long weekend here too so I'm sure gas prices will be hiked even more tomorrow. :( I need to start walking places. I didn't put plates on my bike today because I would have had to drive to the other side of the city for the one place that is open late hours. It's just not worth the gas!

Shada 05-15-2008 08:21 PM

I filled up today for $3.89 a gallon and was happy to see that.

Sadly I can still remember the gas wars from years ago..

The cost of living has skyrocked and wages do not (at least mine, where I work last October they put a freeze on our wages, will not increase to show cost of living ever) compensate for the rise, yet I feel fortunate to still have a job.

When will the Government step up to the plate and say enough is enough??

Janet 05-16-2008 02:12 AM

I really believe if our gov't wanted to do something, they would have done it. We might as well face it...things are going to get more tough than they've ever been.

Rich will get richer, poor will get poorer and then civil and race wars will break out. It's not going to get even a little bit better. So much crime between the have's and have nots. Wish there was something that could be done, but it's not to be......JMO

Marilyn 05-16-2008 03:54 AM

Okay, don't blast me here.....but I'm going to say this, and this comes from a former Republican. This is what we get for electing Republicans. We were bullied into it because the Democratic party stands for gay rights and pro-choice which many of us are opposed to. This caused many people to vote Republican. It is the MORAL thing to do.

However, along with the package comes a preference for rewarding big business and special interests at the general public's expense. Democrats are more for the working people and we "normal" folks lived better under their leadership.

We need another party. A moral party that is for the people. I'm an independant at heart now with Democratic leanings who is prolife. We each make our own moral choices whether things are legal or not. People shouldn't use laws to determine right from wrong. Hope I'm making my point.

Somethings got to change!!!

Marilyn, I don't know about that I use to be a registered Democratic but over the years I have been voting Republican. In my state the Democratics have ruined everything.. I think if a Democrat gets into office as president we are going to be in big trouble. Just my opinion of course, and I value yours.. You are right about making moral choices.

back to gas prices lol I paid $3.55 in another town by me. In my town it varies from $3.75 and up.

Dobie 05-16-2008 06:46 AM

Filled up this morning, 3.77 a gallon.

gja1000 05-16-2008 05:04 PM

I have to agree with Marilyn and the Republican agenda. I'm a lifelong Democrat and I am very proud of the accomplishments of my party, for example, Social Security, Workers Compensation, the 40 hour week, child labor laws, Medicare, civil rights, banking regulation, collective bargaining, and environmental protection.

Oh and gas here in Austin today was anywhere between 3.65 and 3.82.

Gia you are correct there those were the good old days of Roosevelt . The democrats back in the day were on top of things. I agree.

Marilyn 05-16-2008 06:45 PM

Wow, $3.82 in Austin. Never thought I'd see the day. We spoke to a man today who owns oil wells. Due to the current price of crude, he's making $250,000 per month!! Can you imagine. That kind of income is inconceivable. We are paying so other people can make that kind of profit? No one needs that much money. I'm not for taking it away from him, he invested well and should be rewarded for it, but for oil to be this high. This is absurd!!

gja1000 05-16-2008 07:58 PM

You are right, oil is way too high. I wish I knew when it would come down to a reasonable level, but I fear we are looking at the future. I know Europe has been living with these and higher prices for a long time. I don't think they have any sympathy for us.

Part of the problem is that it has happened so quickly - if we had eased up to these prices over a few years, then we'd all be better prepared to adapt with smaller more efficient cars and the like. But no, it's been WHAM - here it is and no one is prepared.

Marilyn 05-17-2008 04:55 AM

I'd sure hate to be a car dealer stuck with huge trucks and SUV's on the lot. The RV industry is hurting as well. I saw a dealership this week with some of their bigger pickups parked out at the curb with $12,000 off signs on them.

Fortunately my company pays for the gas in my truck. I gassed up twice this week. That's $155.00 for gas in one week!! People on $400/month car allowances from their companies are really getting a bad deal right now.

That's what I was trying to say...the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. It's not going to get better...in anything.

DianaB 05-17-2008 10:18 AM

Gas here is $3.749 to $3.819. I fill up at the Co-op and I use a member's card so I really don't pay attention to the price of gas. We're just billed for it at the end of the month.

My husband filled the tractor the other day and it was OVER $700 and sometimes he can empty a tank in a day!!! Next time you go to complain think about what the poor farmers are paying for gas!

Diana I feel for you thats terrible.. I have three cars to provide gas for I told my kids time to get summer jobs now that they are out of school for summer... It is getting so ridiculous.

Janet 05-17-2008 11:57 AM

I did the same thing with Ricky, Gina. He wants to drive..he pays for it ALL. He bought and paid for his used car with money he's earned. Now that he's working part-time (hopefully more in the summer) he has to pay his insurance, gas and plates.

Gas here was $3.89 this morning. I don't know what we're going to do. I need a smaller car, but I love my van and there is so much room in it. I can haul darn near anything. I need to check again and see how many miles per gallon I'm getting. Been quite some time since I checked and I just don't remember.

Chandra Amaya 05-17-2008 07:31 PM

up to 3.69 tonight

Tiramisu 05-21-2008 12:35 PM

$3.799 at my Exxon station today!

Janet 05-21-2008 01:08 PM

It's over $4.00 in some areas of Indiana. I haven't been out to check prices lately here locally.

Tiramisu 05-21-2008 04:12 PM

I'm trying to convince hubby that it costs too much for me to work - gas, clothes, vehicle. He reminds me that I spend most of my money on the kids and g-kids, so I can't quit work.

Marilyn 05-22-2008 03:26 AM

We may have to move our office to a larger city. Where we are now, there are not enough people to find good help. No one can afford to travel very far with gas this high. Sigh........

Sent a PM.

Tiramisu 05-28-2008 06:16 AM

$3.899 this morning at my Exxon station = $80 to fill my Tahoe for the week.

Marilyn 05-28-2008 02:43 PM

I drove to Bay City yesterday, Corpus Christi today, and am going to Houston tomorrow. So glad the company is paying for all of this!!!!

Janet 05-28-2008 06:31 PM

Today we are at $3.99 and at one station it was $4.02

Oh, NO!!!:(

I filled up at a Shell station down the street this evening, and it was $3.799.

Sounds like it will be moving up. Janet you are the first person that I actually know who has seen over $4.00. Wow!!

highlans 05-29-2008 09:49 AM

Need someone to convert this for me but I pay one pound 30 pence a litre

Chandra Amaya 05-31-2008 09:21 PM

3.79 here as well

Janet 06-01-2008 03:39 AM

Here locally it is still running $3.98 and $3.99, there is still one station in Lafayette that has it at $4.02. I don't understand why they are at $4.02 when the others are lower and people are still buying gas there.

Tiramisu 06-09-2008 11:18 AM

$3.999 at my Exxon station today and I need to fill up!!!!!

DianaB 06-09-2008 12:02 PM

When Dae Lynn and I were traveling from Chicago and back we saw gas priced at $4.15!!! I read that the national average is over $4 now!

Gina 06-09-2008 12:22 PM

I paid 3.85 the cheapest.. I have seen it at 3.95

Janet 06-09-2008 02:53 PM

We still have gas at $3.95, but in Lafayette, it's over $4

Whenever I go up to the country, I fill up in NJ. It is the cheapest around here.

Dobie 06-11-2008 09:05 AM

I just paid $4.17.
