I don't see why a doctor is promoting an expensive diet! Well, you are smart enough to not go for it. Atkins is good, and you don't have to buy their food.

I weight 134.5 today!!! I broke that plateau, and only want to lose 2.5 pounds to reach my goal weight. Then, I will gain some back on the transition diet I'm guessing.

Is it good for people that do not have diabetes too?

gja1000 05-26-2011 05:08 PM

Yes, the new Adkins is fine for everyone! Just don't go completely carbless, and eat only protein. That is too hard on your kidneys.

judy 05-27-2011 03:47 AM

This is my diet. You go into ketosis, which they don't tell us, and lose weight fast.

Once the body uses up the stored carbs for energy, it starts to burn fat for energy.
Then, you lose fat! Easy peasy, but controversial. I do not think it is healthy for too long.

Once I lose the weight I want, I go into the transition diet, which brings carbs, like fruit in slowly. Then, I slowly balance out my nutrients to a certain caloric level, and stay on that. I would never recommend this diet to anyone. It is really controversial.

Atkins has gotten a good reputation lately. I would try it for a sensible weight control eating style.

DianaB 05-30-2011 09:28 AM

The new Adkins diet allows for some carbs eventually. You start out with very few for a 2 to 4 weeks and then you start adding them in slowly to find out what point you start to gain....then you back them back off. The book I have is the New Adkins diet.....I still haven't gotten it all read!!! I'm going to try and have Glen do it with me so I won't be alone.

I need to check with the doctor first because of my kidneys and being diabetic. My numbers kinda' worried me with my last blood test. I'm making an appointment for this week.

Janet 05-30-2011 12:42 PM

I wish you the best on this diet. I've decided that I just can't do another one. It's just too hard and then I get depressed because I failed. I'm think I can watch my portions better than I have been so maybe I'll give it a try.

Gina 06-05-2011 12:37 PM

I am at a standstill with losing weight. I have gained about 7lbs. in the past two years and can't seem to lose it at all. I was keeping it off when I had all that dental implant surgery, but don't want to do that again.. I am really not eating fattening foods, I am eating healthy. I don't eat sweets regulary anymore, occassionaly have I a bowl of ice cream and its usually Edys slow churned or a little treat, but nothing is coming off.

I guess my body cant lose anymore weight. I do go to Zumba classes and am going to join a gym again.. I am between pants sizes and don't want to invest in a new wardrobe. Its very frustrating..

gja1000 06-05-2011 02:54 PM

I have GOT to try to lose some weight. I gained 10 lbs this winter while we were in moving mode and I have had NO desire to get it off. I need to lose 20 lbs. I hate the way I look, but with no motivation, I just couldn't do anything.

I am sorta motivated now, and so Gary and I are going to try to start dieting tomorrow. I hope it goes well.

Janet 06-05-2011 04:42 PM

Good luck to all you dieters :)

judy 06-06-2011 06:40 AM

Dieting is so hard! Of course, you are not motivated! Who wants to give up good food, count calories, go low fat, and deny yourself carbs? Such craziness!
I am like a drug addict when I go to the supermarket! I crave every carb I pass - the breads, the cakes, the cookies, junk food, even the fruit. I am afraid one day I just may break in at night and they will find me happily snoozing in the cookie aisle the next morning!

I am down to 134 now. I was actually 132.5 yesterday morning! I had steak last night, and that stays in your stomach for about 48 hours, so it will show up on the scale. My goal weight is 132 but I could stop right now. My coach told me that people usually go about 5 pounds under their goal weight. Then, when we add carbs, etc. slowly, any weight gain won't get us over the goal weight.

I'll know when I am done, so I'm not concerned.

Diana, the new Adkins sounds like my Medifast diet. Definitely check with your doctor first. This diet is stressful for your body, and you need to be sure your body can deal with it.

gja1000 06-06-2011 05:27 PM

Well, Gary and I started our diets today. I count WW points, but I also have an App for my iPhone (probably one for the iPad too), called Lose It! It's free. It calculated that I should have 1200 cals per day to lose 1.5 lbs a week - which is approximately the same as my number of WW points (I get 25 WW points and each point is approximately 50 cals).

You input your food and exercise for each meal each day and the app keeps track of everything. It's pretty nifty. It also saves the food you eat in a bank since most people eat basically the same thing, so eventually, you don't have to look up the food you ate, you just go to the bank and can easily find what you ate and enter it. It's kinda fun and it's a novelty right now, so that may help - ANYTHING may help and goodness knows, I need help right now.

judy 06-07-2011 06:16 AM

That app sounds very useful. I think I might add it.

Good luck with WW. I think that is the best of all diets.

gja1000 06-08-2011 04:48 AM

Well this is the start of day 4 and I'm doing well. I am hungry in the afternoon about 4:00 and I didn't take anything to snack on with me to school, so I just ignored it and ate a little watermelon when I got home which seemed to curb the hunger. I'm also hungry in the late evening, but not ravenously hungry like the late afternoon hunger. I need to find some snacks that I can eat that won't burn up all my calories. I CANNOT snack on fruit or raw vegetables because they make my stomach growl and it feels like hunger pains. I need to find a lower calorie granola bar that tastes decent. My favorite bar has 150 calories and I don't want to waste that many calories on a snack. Any ideas for me?

judy 06-08-2011 05:50 AM

Fiber one bars are 90 calories and have a lot of fiber. Doesn't WW have snacks available? I remember buying delicious bars at WW when I was trying it again.

How about sugar free jello? It's sweet and fun to eat. I don't know how many points they are, but I am allowed 4 to 5 olives, which also have good fat.

Janet 06-08-2011 07:28 AM

I am interested in that app you mentioned Gayle. As soon as my IPad is charged I'm going to check it out. Maybe if I just watch calories a little more closely that would help me instead of trying a 'diet'. I'm hoping to be a bit more active once school is out and I won't have to be on a schedule of any kind.

I was going to recommend Mrs. Mays bars but I checked out there calories and it's 170. But boy are they delicious.

gja1000 06-19-2011 06:55 PM

I'm doing well on my second week of dieting with Lose It! I lost 2 lbs last week and I weigh tomorrow to see what I've lost this week. Might not be as much since dieting while in Houston with the kids was a struggle. I still get pretty hungry at times, I'm snacking on watermelon and Special K 90 calorie bars (they're not too good though).

Blueyes 06-19-2011 07:05 PM

i like South Beach bars!

gja1000 06-19-2011 08:18 PM

I do too, but they usually have more calories than I want to spend on a snack. Sigh. My favorite are the Sweet and Salty bars, but they are 160 each. Sometimes I break down and eat one though

judy 06-20-2011 06:00 AM

The Medifast bars are delicious, although my grandchildren don't think so! Maybe I am just used to them, but I really enjoy them. They are 110 Cal., 25 Cal from fat and 4 g fiber. I'm not sure how many points that would be. They also have 11 g Protein.

They are expensive, but cheaper on eBay. Medifast gets $16.25/box of 7 bars. I don't pay a lot of S&H because I am a member, but they charge a lot to ship if you are not a member. Ebay is better for S&H too.

I spend about $300/month for all of my food, and then have one "lean ande green" meal every day. My total food costs are low.

I weighed in at 130.5 this morning!!! I lost 20 pounds! YAY FOR ME!!!

gja1000 06-23-2011 06:49 PM

I'm still doing well on the diet - day 18 and I have not gone over my calorie alotment yet. It is hard, I get very hungry sometimes, but I try to eat a 90 calorie bar to curb the hunger. I can also eat watermelon and that doesn't make me feel more hungry. I just wish I could find more things for snacks that were good tasting and low calorie!!!

Janet 06-24-2011 06:42 AM

I really need to get busy like the rest of you and just stick to It. I was lying in bed this morning and could already feel pain before I even got out of bed. Elbow joints hurt and my knees...they ache so bad. I know it would help or even stop most of the pain if I'd just get some of this weight off. I weighed myself and I'm up to 258 lbs. Not good...not good at all. I start off well with losing and then the first bit of stress or anything really just sets me off and I eat. I try to tell myself it's a matter of life and death, but even that doesn't phase me. I wonder if hypnotism would work.....or at least help.

gja1000 06-24-2011 08:45 AM

Janet, do you take glucosamine? It's over the counter, you can get it at Walmart. It lubricates the joints. EVERYONE should be taking it starting in the 40's. It helps prevent joint deterioration and pain. It really works. You only need plain glucosamine, 2000 my per day. You do not need glucosamine with chondroitin or with MSM, just plain.

Lindsey 06-24-2011 09:39 AM

I thought I was going to lose weight in Europe, but I didn't. We walked almost all day every day, and my legs were aching, but I am still the same weight as before I left! Scott actually gained 5 lbs! But I think it was probably muscle, he's pretty scrawny

judy 06-24-2011 10:31 AM

Janet, my blood pressure is down to normal since I took off the weight. It really does help with your health.

I'm down to 132, and I would like to go down a little further still. I still have a puffy stomach though, and always will.

Gayle, I don't know how the new WW system works, but there were snacks when I was on it. Pirate's Booty, the small bag, was 1 point. Cantalop and honey dew were low in points. Grapes too. They also sell a lot of these 100 cal snack bags, like nabisco crackers. There is a really low cal snack in my supermarket. I forget the name, but I will look at it next time I go shopping. Jello and fat free Cool Whip are also low in points. There are also breads that are 1 point/slice. If you are craving carbs, that should do it. I used to try to figure out what I was craving, like crunchy salty, and then look for an alternative, like Pirate's Booty. Cantelope with low fat chocolate syrup satisfied my craving for sweets.

gja1000 06-24-2011 01:21 PM

I'm not doing WW, just counting calories - so I can eat most anything. It's just a matter of spending an hour or so in the grocery store looking over things that I like or might like that are low in calories. My problem with the 100 calorie packs is that there is so little in there, it's not worth spending 100 calories. I got 2 kinds of 90 calorie bars today and I really like one of them - the other is just OK. I do like watermelon so I've been eating that. When I crave salty, I eat the 100 calorie bags of low fat popcorn.

DianaB 06-24-2011 01:48 PM

I started the Adkins diet yesterday. It went pretty well so I'm excited to see how it goes. I went to the grocery store today........and WOW......I spent a lot on groceries!!! It will be worth it though if I can lose this weight!!!

Janet 06-24-2011 05:43 PM

Thanks Gayle!!! I'm heading to Wal Mart tomorrow to pick up a prescription so I'll check out the glucosamine. Still...I need to get the weight off. I did load up the IPad2 with foods that I eat on a regular basis so I won't have to add them later. You all have me so motivated at this moment...I hope I can keep it up. With using Lose It....what do you do when you go out to eat? Do you ask for their food information? I think most restaurants are suppose to have it if requested, but I'm not sure.

Diana...being on Atkins or South Beach is expensive at first I thought, but gets better as you go along. Good luck to you....I hope you can get yourself healthier, I don't want anything happening to you.

gja1000 06-24-2011 06:24 PM

There are some restaurant foods on Lose It, but not many. When I eat out, I try to choose something like grilled chicken or something that I know the calorie count - grilled chicken is about 50 calories per oz and 4 ounces is about the size of the palm of your hand. If I have a grilled chicken sandwich, I know a small bun will be 120 and a large one 150. It will have some mayo - so I usually scrape some off and count 40 calories. Usually I just sorta wing it when we go out.

gja1000 06-24-2011 06:24 PM

Diana, I'm glad to know that you started Adkins - I think you will do really well and it will help your blood sugar.

DianaB 06-25-2011 09:53 AM

I've been on it for a couple of days and have done really well with it but my blood sugar isn't showing any change........it's still high. I'm not sure what's going on but at least the doctor will be checking me again in a week or so.

gja1000 06-25-2011 04:28 PM

You may not be on enough medication. You may need a higher dose. Try taking a 15 or 20 minute walk and see what happens with your blood sugar.

gja1000 06-25-2011 06:48 PM

I just discovered that Kelloggs Rice Crispy bars have 90 calories. They taste MUCH better than the 90 calorie granola bars I have tried. YAY! A good tasting 90 calorie snack.

judy 06-26-2011 07:01 AM

Yummy! I LOVE BARS!!!

Janet 06-26-2011 09:05 AM

I've been using the Lose It app since Friday and so far I've lost 2 lbs. It's kind of nice to be able to see what I'm eating and have it on my IPad. I hope I can keep it up. LOLOLOL....I should be at my goal weight Dec. 3, 2012. Now I just need to get off my butt and do some walking...I love to walk.

Gina 06-26-2011 12:06 PM

I see everyone is watching their weigh and you can add me in. I don't really count calories just started eating healthy thanks to Dr. Oz lol . I normally run a BP of 110/70 but the past year I have been a little higher so my dr. checks me every three mts. I go back this Thurs. to see. I have had lots of stress lately , not good I keep everything bottled inside but I have been working through my issues. So hopefully my BP is back to normal this week..

Along with eating healther I have cut out most sweets I no longer crave for cake and cookies as I use to. I indulge every once in awhile. I am addicted to honey roasted peanuts don't know if they are fattening or not, but I think nuts are healthy. Anyone know about how fattening peanuts are? I eat plenty of grilled chicken and salads, I am feeling like a rabbit. lol I just love the orange sherbet ice cream bars they dont seem so high in fat either.. That is my treat. I also eat lots of yogurts to.

As far as exercising as I mention I take Zumba classes twice a week and that works for me....

gja1000 06-26-2011 03:45 PM

Gina, honey roasted peanuts are pretty high in calories and fat. There are approx 150 calories and 14 grams of fat in one ounce. That's probably about 3o nuts, depending on the size of the nuts.

Janet 06-26-2011 03:45 PM

Well......I BLEW IT TODAY...lol. My wonderful son brought home a Little Caesar's pizza....stupid stupid me....I ate 4 freak'n pieces and 2 of the crazy bread. What the heck is wrong with me!! I was under on my calories yesterday, but I'm 748 over today. I need my head examined. I'll start over tomorrow.

gja1000 06-26-2011 04:15 PM

That's the spirit, Janet. Just get back on the wagon! Today is done.

I'm really liking the Lose It app. It helps me to be able to see what I have eaten and for some reason it has been good motivation.

Gina 06-26-2011 05:49 PM

Oh thank you so much Gayle for that info. I have been eating them by the handfuls. I should have realized anything that yummy is bad for you. lol I will no longer be eating them daily :(

Janet don't beat yourself up , once in awhile you are allowed to fall off the wagon, tomorrow is a new day. :)
