I went to town this morning and it's at $3.95 here. So far it's not over $4. I heard on the news by some kind of professional that it could be up to $5 by July 1. That is way too much. It also showed on the news the truckers in Europe protesting also. They are paying over $8 and $9 dollars a gallon in some areas. I just couldn't believe it.
Here I remember riding my bike to the gas station around the corner when I was little to get gas in a one-gallon can (to mow the yard) and it was 25 cents. When it went to 26 cents, my dad through a fit...LOL. Oh if he could see it now. |
Remember "cruising" through town on Fridaynight? Putting $2 in the car would last all night!
I swear I feel less traffic on the roads. I had a pre-op doctor visit this morning and actually set my cruise control for about 8 miles coming across on the Beltway at lunchtime, where it is always bumper-to-bumper with stop&go traffic. Some of it is that school's out, but I've never been able to run the cruise there before. It was pretty spooky. |
You probably felt like you where alone in the world didn't you???....lol. That guy that was talking about the gas prices on the news said the only way to get the prices to drop would be for the usage to go down 25%. Right now we're only using 1-2% less.
|
Gas spiked another 5 cents per litre here on Monday (as I was in a city 2 hours away and needed to fill up to get home!) so now it's about $1.40/L all around the province. That equals about $5.30/gal. Just to travel to get to my 2 day course and back for work it cost me $90 in gas, and my car is really good on gas!

I need to post some pics of truck dealerships around here. Texans love their big trucks, or did. Dealers are declining to take the big SUV's in trade saying they will never be able to sell them. Truck dealerships have the big trucks out front with big plastic numbers down the side stating $12,000 off.
I talked with a customer today who has parked his big diesel truck and just bought a small fuel efficient Nissan. His car payment and gas bill combined will be less for the small car than his fuel bill alone for his paid for truck. So sad. He's keeping the truck to pull trailers when he needs to and will use the car for his daily driving. Hubby drives a Lincoln Navigator, and his gas bill is over $600 per month. We're reviewing options. |
It's really a hardship for people who have long commutes right now. I feel bad for them, and am relieved I'm not one of them. I'm also VERY glad Greg's a company driver rather than an owner operator so we don't have to pay for his diesel fuel. He drove 3400 miles last week, gets a bonus for getting over 7 miles per gallon... so at $4.24 per gallon he used $2,059.43 worth of fuel just last week at that 7mpg rate.
And people wonder why the price of everything in the stores is going up? I'm already wondering what's going to happen next winter when we have to heat our homes! On the news tonight they said fuel oil in my area is $4.43 per gallon right now. Thank God natural gas is about half that... but it's still going to really hurt everyone. |
Oh, my, I hadn't thought about heating oil. We use so little heat down here. Sure hope we don't have people dying because they couldn't afford the heat. More people may be moving south as a result.
Something's gotta change. |
Until 'We the People" do something about it, it will not change. We all need to change our lifestyles a bit and if everyone would do it, we would probably see a difference. It's just that we have those that will say..."well, those 3 people over there are conserving, so I won't have to" and then they are the ones who complain.
I just wish we weren't as selfish a nation as we are. It's very disturbing. |
Janet, I agree with all you've said. I just don't understand why it's going so high and I'm very worried about where it will go. My oldest daughter's not sure they can keep up with their house payment, car repairs, food for 6, gas prices, and electricity prices for much longer.

I don't understand why we can build refineries here. I just don't get it. Does anyone else know? There is no reason why we can not produce more of our own fuel. One guy on the news was saying something about certain areas having endangered species. We are going to have to face the facts that we can't save everything ....and ourselves too.
|
Hubby has been talking with some of the oil people in the area and they say there is no shortage of oil. They are actually capping some producing wells to limit the supply and keep the price up. They call it free enterprize. Isn't that a kick in the pants!!
|
Well for the greedy a$$holes, we can only pray what goes around, comes around!
I know that's not nice, but it's how I feel. They are making it harder on people who have almost given up hope, some already have. I don't know about other cities....or what all the reasons are....but we've have 3 suicides in 13 days, one teenager the other two adults. If something or someone doesn't step in, there will be more people feeling helpless and hopeless and this will be an everyday occurance. |
Right - no shortage of crude - just not enough US refineries.

There were several projects recently to increase production capacity and to clean up the diesel to reduce emmissions. These projects cost money, but not enought to cause the prices to increase anywhere near the levels they are now. Maybe the oil tycoons are getting while the getting's good and are afraid of what changes may happen as a result of the Nov. election. I don't understand the economics of it all, but really do feel that we are being taken advantage of. And our government is still subsidizing the oil industry, go figure. |
It makes me sad, angry and when I read about this type of thing, it's like I just want to through my hands in the air and say "what's the point?" Don't know why people even want to try anymore...it's just so frustrating.
|
Marilyn - demand has increased dramatically and those refineries have not been expanded to process the supply to meet the demand. THIS IS NOT THE SINGLE PROBLEM, but it is one. A huge offshore drilling rig (BP's Thunder Horse) that I've been working on for the last five years just started up about an hour ago, almost 3 years behind schedule and MILLIONS over budget. It listed and was almost lost two years ago and there have been problems with some subsea equipment. Of course, I don't have the answer, but I often feel we're helping others when we should be helping ourselves more.

Now they are saying that the flood in Iowa and Illinois will affect corn production which will raise the price of corn which will raise the price of ethanol. Our gasoline is mandated by the government to be 8 to 10% ethanol in most states. Sooo, the flood will raise the price of gasoline. It may be necessary to repeal the ethanol requirement to keep the price down. |
Oh no!!! Here in Frankfort the gas is now up to $4.19. I honestly can not believe this is actually happening!! Guess I might go looking for a moped instead of cell phone internet service or a GPS. This is so ridiculous.
|
I just wonder what would happen if we all parked the old gas guzzlers and bought little tiny cars or scooters? With the reduced consumption would the price actually drop???
|
Gas prices have reached $3.99 - $4.03  I don't know how true this is but my friend said to be careful some stations are charging more if you use credit card payment as oppose to cash. What bs this is crazy.
|
I saw one station that had gas posted at 20 cents a gallon less that most others. I pulled in to see since the tank was almost empty, and in small print at the bottom of the sign were the words, "charged to your Chevron card". So they were using the sign to lure us in and discounting if you charged the gas. Guess they are counting on people charging and paying late or paying over time at a huge interest. They will probably make up the 20 cent difference that way.
|
Marilyn isn't it illegal to have two different set of prices.. cc vs. cash. If that was so wouldn't all of the merchants do it. ?
|
In Austin it's about $3.89
|
Here in PA it's 4.15 a gallon, this is crazy, it cost me $74.00 to fill up my suv, and my work truck was over $80.00...
|
Would someone explain to me how we can have all this technology and yet we can't get a car to go more than 25-30 mpg. I don't understand it. We can put a man on the moon, build a space station, have wireless technology, but our gas mileage doesn't improve. Can someone explain why?
|
Good one Diana!!! I'd like to know too.

Dropped to $3.799
|
Dropped 11 cents a litre here... conversions... from $5.45/gal to $5.07/gal... what are you guys complaining about? :p
|
I don't know what it is here. I've been home painting and haven't had to fill up in quite a while. I have heard it's gone down in price twice.
|
Well, the highest I paid around here was $4.079. The city where we actually live, the highest I saw was $3.999. It has dropped over the past week to $3.579. Some people are saying that it is due to the push for offshore drilling, but we won't see new offshore oil for many years, even if they start working on it right away. Correct me if I'm wrong here, Sandy.
Others are saying it's because Congress is talking about dipping into our oil reserves to help bring the price down. It's very obvious, that the price we are paying isn't based on the cost to produce, but on speculation of what the future holds. How sad!!! Hubby told me that ExxonMobile announced their quarterly profits and they are huge!!! Highest profits any company has ever made in a quarter. I heard on the news that they aren't making the profits at the pumps. They must be making it selling oil to their own refineries or something. They are making it somewhere and bottomline, it's coming out of our pockets, you can bet on that!!!! |
Marilyn, I worked on a large project for the Gulf of Mexico that took only two years from start of construction to first oil. That time could double if it is only in conception. We need more refineries.
I won't even try to defend ExxonMobil because we've gotta blame somebody! |
Down from $4.09.9 to $3.84.9 here right now.
|

Someone is in control of this, someone has the answer. Just wish they would step up and make things right. |
First, there hasn't been a "new" refinery built in many years. (Some had added on and some have revamped.) Second, between availability and environmentally, there's no place to build.
Production is ramped down because the refineries need to be modernized. |
$3.82.9 here today
|
$4.69 in Homer Alaska (I'm on vacation). I hear it is down from almost $5.00
The TV ads here say heating oil is $6.50 a gallon here and if it stays that high, it could cost $2100 per month to heat your home this winter  The state of Alaska is proposing a $1200 rebate to help with heating costs this winter. Sounds to me like it needs to be A LOT MORE!!! |
Gayle, that's insane! It's bad enough here!
|
How will the people be able to pay other necessities? I think it's down to $3.71 here.
