The Presidential Election

It looks like it's going to be a McCain vs Hillary election. I don't think Obama will make it, although I like him. It would be interesting if he and Hillary paired up as President and Vice President, but they've been slamming each other too much.

I don't see Mitt Romney winning either. He's not as well known as McCain.

The media in NY is really making so much fun of Giuliani! His "win Florida and forget the rest" strategy wasn't even close to sane.

I would say it's going to be a very boring election.

Janet 02-01-2008 04:38 PM

I think it looks like a very scary future too. Maybe we should have run Judy????

Tink 02-01-2008 05:27 PM

Quite seriously I cringe to think of the Clintons representing us again. They were an absolute embarrassment last time. How anyone could vote for her is beyond my understanding.

The woman gives me the creeps.

I agree.. i would love a woman president but not here... I would NEVER vote for her... I want OBAMA to win .... crossing fingers!!

Janet 02-02-2008 04:19 AM

I never get into political discussions, don't know why I'm posting this. 99.9% of the time, I'm on the other side of the fence from others. Don't want Hillary, but definitely don't want Obama either. I don't take elections lightly..I study, read and watch for as much information as I can get. Thought about crossing lines, but McCain is such a ...well it doesn't help to call names. So....like I said earlier...it's going to be a very scary future.

I agree with you, Tink! I have one ruled out and I don't have any idea on the others.

katcarasella 02-02-2008 10:19 AM

I'm still registered up in Wisconsin, by the time I thought about it it was too late to register here for the primary. This is the first time since I was 21 that I won't be voting in the primary:( I am so bummed out about this. I was gonna write Stephan Colbert from Comedy Central in as my candidate of choice:)

Yes! I would be a good president - put a quick end to all this nonsense and have a good time doing it!

When I was a teacher, my kids always wanted me to become a principal. We would laugh because they knew if it was a nice warm day, I'd call off classes and have a field trip right to the beach.

Honestly, I don't see that much difference on the issues between Hillary and McCain.

My problem with Hillary is not with the issues. It was all the things that went on in the White House when her husband was there. You know that if she's president that her husband will be going with her and there'll only be more chaos.

judy 02-02-2008 01:58 PM

Politicians always confused me. Why anyone would want that life is not something I can connect to. You're in the public eye, have a need for power, lie a lot, etc. and I just don't get it.

I'm sure there are many politicians who sincerely want to make this country the best it can be, but we really don't hear about the good things. The media feeds us only the bad.

I would be a good President though. We all know what's right and what's wrong,
it's the gray areas we have trouble with. That's where compromise is needed, and where we don't seem to be able to do that.

Tiramisu 02-03-2008 02:24 PM

I liked Edwards!

There's an awful email going around about him being a radical Muslim - kind of trying to tie him to the terrorist factions in the Muslim religion. If you Snope it, of course it's lies. How foolish some people are.

Yup, I noticed that the email was complete lies. Sad... :( They aired a huge story about it on Fox as well, none of which was true. (CNN later ran a story showing all of the lies.)

I guess that's to be expected in politics though.

Tink 02-03-2008 06:59 PM

I have gotten that same email several times. I always copy the page from Snopes onto it and send it back to the people I got it from. WHY don't people check those things out?!?

I do that when I get fake emails too! LOL! I hate for fake stuff to just keep circulating...

highlans 02-04-2008 02:51 AM

What date is the final election and your new president voted in?. Over here news is on Hilary a lot.

Marilyn 02-04-2008 04:24 AM

The real election is in November once we've narrowed it down to one candidate from each party, and they have selected their vice presidential running mate.

We really don't have any good choices left. I was for Ron Paul, but knew he could not make it. Next choice was Edwards, and he's bit the dust.

Now I'm for Obama. McCain is pro-war in Iraq, and Hillary....well I have several reasons not to want Hillary in the office.

I've heard it speculated that McCain will pick Condolesa Rice for his VP either way, to try to pull the black and female votes.

I'm afraid we are in for trouble either way you go. No one decent wants to run for president. Who would really want to subject themselves to all the media scruttiny and to have to deal with all the frustrations of running this huge mess? There are no simple answers.

That's a very good idea Tink!

I heard this morning that if Hillary doesn't win the California primary, she may not win
That's how close they are now!

Your way is so much better. We're really subjected to months of commercials, media hype, every bit of dirt that can be found about every candidate, debates, candidates bashing each other, etc. People argue about "their" candidates and issues, and so on. By the time the election finally comes, most of us already hate all of them, including the new President!

Well said! I get so tired of all the commercials and bashing by the end. The TN senate election was the worst EVER this past time and I was so glad to see it over with, even though the candidate I supported didn't win.

And why can't the candidates win on their own merit rather than the flaws of the others? I hate when it comes down to who has the fewest faults rather than who has the better ideas and plans...

Marilyn 02-04-2008 09:52 PM

Ladies, you should move to Texas if you hate the commercials. They all just figure we're all voting Republican, so why bother. Part of the Rio Grande Valley votes Democrat, as does Houston and Austin, the remainder of the state is pretty much all Republican. Besides, our primary isn't until March 4th, when most of the country has already picked their delegates. Candidates don't spend much money for advertising in our state.

We have to go to national news to find out what's going on.

judy 02-06-2008 07:24 AM

An election joke!

One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he
asked about his bill and the barber replies, 'I cannot accept money
from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased
and left the shop.

When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a
'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his
bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm
doing community service this week' The cop is happy and leaves the
shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a 'thank
you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when
he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept
money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The
professor is very happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a 'thank
you' card and a dozen different books, such as 'How to Improve Your
Business' and 'Becoming More Successful.

'Then, a Congressman comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay
his bill the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you.
I'm doing community service this week.' The Congressman is very happy
and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen
Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between
the citizens of our country and the members of our Congress.

Vote carefully this year.

DianaB 02-06-2008 05:39 PM

That's cute, Judy and probably very true!!!

Marilyn 02-06-2008 07:45 PM

Judy, that was too funny and as Diana said, probably true.

BTW, they are saying that Texas may be as swing state this year. So we may see some political commercials after all.

Only problem is..... I hate to say this but hispanics as a rule probably won't vote for a black candidate. Please don't hit me for saying that. I'm not at all prejudiced. I've had several hispanics tell me that themselves. They believe that most would rather vote for a woman for president than for a black person, and the majority of them will vote democrat. So if Obama has a chance here, he's got to draw the independents and liberal republicans. Where we live, whites are in the minority, so I have several close hispanic friends. Some close enough to be considered family.

I really wish all the primaries were the same day in the entire nation. The early primaries affect the voting in the other states way too much!!

Janet, Indiana should be a swing state, too. Isn't your primary in March, also??

Tink 02-06-2008 09:30 PM

It's an amazingly close race for the Dems... The republicans though don't seem to have much of a contest going on at this point.

I'm not sure if we'll be a swing state, but our primary is in May.

 May  This just emphasizes my point. Most of the country will have already had their primaries and a lot of folks will make up their mind based on what the rest of the country did rather than all of us deciding on our own and voting at once. We won't even have a chance to vote on the candidates who already dropped out!!!

This needs to change!!!

judy 02-07-2008 05:32 AM

That's what they're saying on the NYC news too Marilyn. They expect the Hispanics to vote for Hillary, and Obama to get the balance of the Democratic votes.

I agree, the primaries should be on the same day. Then we know who is running and that's that. They are going to have about 5 unexpected swing states. I wonder what changed? These were Republican states until now.

You know what frustrates me even more than this? The whole super delegate thing! How ridiculous is it that 800 people each get a vote that counts practically the same as a whole precinct?! What's the point in having primaries if they're going to disregard what we say anyway... :thumbdwn:

But yes, I also agree that it would be much better to have all of the primaries and caucuses at the same time. It'd be much more fair to all of the candidates AND voters that way. But I doubt the parties would ever go for it. They don't seem to like changes like that. Just look what the democratic party did to Florida over the voting schedule...

If the bad stuff is that he is Muslim and supports terrorists and such, I suggest you do a quick Snopes search and you'll see that it was all lies made up to turn the populace against him. The rumors have been dispelled, but that doesn't keep them from circulating unfortunately... :(

That's fine. That's the great thing about America. We all get to have our own opinion and vote. :) I just hate to see when someone has been misinformed and hope you will research so that you can get a better understanding of the candidates. Sometimes it's hard to see the truth when there are so many rumors... Snopes and FactCheck.org are good unbiased sources. :)
