New Career
I've decided I'm going back to school; However I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to go for. According to my therapist my intelligence lies in Math, Interpersonal; & music. When I was in collage I was a Math Education major the 1st year; then I switched to Elimentary Education; then Psychology; Then management (which is what I got my degree in). I intend to meet with a Career counselor at the local college & take the Strong interest Inventory test to see what direction that leads me in. My two leading ideas are a master in psychology or finishing my math education degree. My husband is afraid for my safety as a teacher; so if anyone is a teacher or has any insights on that it would be helpful. I thought psychology was the way I was going to head, but a lot of my friends that work in that area tell me it's very stressful; the pain sucks; they burn out in 5-10 years. So any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

I think that it's great that you're going back to school! I don't have any suggestions that can help you but I'm sure that some of the other girls will. Good luck!!!!!

I just wanted to tell you good luck in whatever you choose! Having a career is a wonderful step for any woman..

If you love math, how about engineering. There is a shortage, and beginning pay right out of college now starts at $65,000.+. Mechanical engineering is a particularly versital field, and women are in demand in this profession. Whatever you decide, wish you the very best!!!

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. I just figure now the time to figure out what i would truely love. I'm young, no kids yet, & I have the time & money to become anything i desire. Now i just have to figure out what that is. |
I don't have any suggestions, but I just wanted to wish you luck. It's great that you're actively taking steps to make yourself more happy and fulfilled! Way to go!

Congratulations! That's wonderful.
I was a teacher of inner city high school students. It takes several years to figure out your classroom management skills. I was not afraid of the kids, but I have a very strong personality. Teaching is not easy. It takes a certain kind of person. I do have to say though, I don't think that there is a job that I would have gotten more back from. I loved my kids, and enjoyed being with them. I hope I gave them something that they can use in their lives. I know I gave them love, and that's always a good thing. |
My masters degree is in behavioral psychology - while it is very stressful sometimes, the rewards of helping individuals to live independent lives is priceless. I've been in the field for 22 years.

I don't have any suggestions either...my advice really hasn't been too good as of late. I just want to wish you great luck in whatever you decide. I was always told if you do what makes you happy, then it won't seem like work.

Thank you all for your support. I'm excited & scared. I can't wait until I can get an appointment & take the test to see what might be a good fit for me. I've never really had a passion that could translate into a job; that's where my issue lies. I like a lot of things, but i've never loved anything. I love animals, so i thought i wanted to be a vet, but working in a vet office when I was 15 made me quesy. I love music, but don't have a lot of talent, so that's not an option. I love math & love to tutor people, but i'm not sure i could deal with who don't want to be there & don't want to learn, plus i'm not the most PC person in the world (my mouth has no filter, what i think comes right out). I think I could really enjoy the psychology. I love to learn new things & new challenges & i like to help people. Also business law is now on the radar. Again thank you all for your support.

I have an appointment with the career counselor on Thurs. at 4:30. They gave me instructions to take the Meyers-brigg & strong interest inventory tests over the internet before I come in so those things are done. I'm getting very excited to see what they say i would enjoy. Hopefully this clears some things up for me & I can start towards a career i could really enjoy.

How interesting!
I took a similar test as a teenager. I think I was supposed to be an artist and/or an art teacher. I became a science teacher, but I think nature and the universe are exquisite, so it worked out well for me. Keep us posted. |
