I've never used Elements so I just did a quick google search for something along the lines of "separate an object from the background using Elements 5.0". There were lots of articles, but most weren't helpful so I just went down the list till I got one that seemed to fit your need.
Here's the link. I didn't post it because there were lots of other things too and the part you needed was about halfway down. I didn't even think about the fact that you might be interested in the other stuff too! Silly me!
