I hope you can figure out what's wrong or get a different one. Not sure but it could have been a real fire hazard had your husband not checked on it. I would be afraid to try again. I've never had an 'automatic' one so can't help you there. I have just a simple West Bend. I've used it so many times it's about time to get a new one. It does have high, low and warmer, but just not automatic. After all this time...I've never needed it. Good luck.
