I'm pretty sure you can't catch a virus from applications. I usually ignore most of them anyway! It gets very cluttered after awhile, and you keep getting notifications from applications that you don't even remember
Oh, and it doesn't HAVE to be open to everyone. If you have any personal information such as phone numbers, addresses, anything like that, turn your privacy settings higher. If you click on Settings at the top right beside the search area on the right, it gives you the option for Privacy Settings. Most of mine is set to "Only Friends" so that random people can't find my information, just people I have accepted to be on my friends list.
