Comments made in the year 1955

Comments made in the year 1955, That's only 53 years ago!

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.

''Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2, 000.00 will only buy a used one.

''If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?

''If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire Outside help at the store.

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

''Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.

''It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

''It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

''I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.

''Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.

''The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

''There is no sense going anywhere anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.

''No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.

''If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a haircut, forget it.

Estate planning

Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed a wife with which to share his fortune.

One evening at an investment meeting he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.

'I may look like just an ordinary man,' he said to her, 'but in just a few years, my father will die, and I'll inherit 20 million dollars.'

Impressed, the woman obtained his business card and three days later, she became his stepmother.

Women are so much better at estate planning....

About the comments--We'd give anything to go back to those days!!! I wonder what they would have thought about what "our day" is like. I'm concerned about the future and what prices are going to do.

About estate planning--That was very cute, Tink!!!

I wouldn't really want to go back to those days. Life was much harder, there were less choices for women and I suspect if we figured out what minimum wage was back then, those prices wouldn't look so good after all. Wouldn't it be cool to make what we make today and pay those prices? Now THAT I'd sign up for!

I'd go back to that time with ya Diana!!! I don't believe the one about gas being 29 cents in 1955. It sure wasn't in Frankfort, Indiana. I remember getting lawn mower gas at the Webb Oil Station with a quarter and I rode my bike to go get it. I was probably around 8 or 9 years old, but we could do that then.

The reason I remember Dad getting upset when it went to 26 cents is because it scared me. I thought if we kept buying it we were going to be poor.

And 55 years later, that came true!

Ladies life was less complex back in the day. We have come a long way in modern medicine and technology . Good things have come about . To go back like Terri mentioned and earn todays wages ahhhhhhh life would be grand...

I can remember riding my bicycle all over town when I was young. Our swimming pool was on the other side of town from where I lived and it was all up hill!! We ended up having to walk our bikes part of the way but going home...........now that was fun!!!! We hardly had to pedal!!!

Too bad it is not safe to let our kids do things like that now.

Living in the rural area that I do, many do still let their kids ride bikes around town and such. I'm not sure it's any safer here, we have our wackos and sickos like any place else... the difference is we usually know them.

That is the way it was with us too Diana!!! Only we would walk to the swimming pool (about 3 miles from us) on Tuesday (girls free day) and Wednesday (boy free day). We didn't have a worry in the world...or so we thought.

Even with the lower wages and prices people still made good honest livings. I wish that we could have those days come back. Good clean living.

We still have some of that here in our small community. We have community cookouts on the "square" and an occasional ice cream social. At Homecoming you can let your kids run with other kids and not worry about them and we have a bean feed for anyone who wants to come.

Homecoming is our home town fair and everyone who's gone to school here tries to come back for class reunions (where they get to ride on a float in the parade). Our parade includes the police cars, the fire trucks, a few old convertibles with the mayor and other hometown politicians, kids on bicycles (and tricycles!), old tractors, new tractors, people riding horses, and of course, the street sweeper!!!! The cheerleaders and Pom Poms perform and the bank sponsors children's games, like digging through a stack of hay for money and candy. Oh, and we have turtle races!!!!
