Bad parents!

I'm putting this under parenting cause this was a case of really bad parenting!
I was at the river the other day with Ryan fishing from this little 'beach'. The Fraser River is a fast running river, and I watch boats being pulled all over the place from the current all the time. This big group of people comes to the beach, and we figure they must be drunk cause they are all singing terribly and hooting, etc. Well I see this mom bring her 3yr and 5yr old girls down to the water's edge. They girls were precious, so I was watching them play. Then mom takes them back up to where she's sitting which a group of people, and the girls eventually wonder down alone. So I'm looking around and see that mom is no where to be seen. So I put my book down and watch them like a hawk. Well the little one is starting to get confident and I just KNEW something bad was going to happen. I even played it out in my head having to jump in the water with my clothes on. Well, what do you know, the little one takes about 3 steps into the river, and steps off a drop...she going completely under water, at this point I am out of my chair going over there. Her big sister (thank God) grabbed her arms and starts screaming 'help, help' and I grab the little one out of the water from here sister and set her on the sand and said some things to calm her. Mom starts wondering down the water, doesn't even look at me, or talk to me. I wasn't going to say "you are a terrible mother, do you know how many children drown every year?' cause that wasn't going to make her less interested in her beer, and more interested in her children's well being.

I was so shaken up. I was glad I was watching them, it was weird how I just knew it was going to happen.

Ps, the little girl was okay. Who knows what kinda trauma she may endure because of it though...And her big sister may be a bit traumatized too. Poor girls!

Thank God you were there and knew what was going on.

I just don't understand how a parent could do that. I know I was an older parent, but Ricky was never out of my site. I knew where he was at all times.

I hope that woman knows you were her child's angel that day.

They are so lucky you were there - the weight of the first one could have dragged the second one in! That mother probably doesn't even realize how close she was to burying her girls.

These are the moms we see on TV crying about their lost child. It's so sad. Janet, I was like you, and mine still got into some scary situations. Can't imagine what would have happened if we hadn't been so careful. We all need to pray for these two girls. Hopefully they will turn out to be good healthy young ladies in spite of their parents.

Thank goodness you were keeping an eye on them! Did the Mom ever thank you? You certainly deserved it.

Yeah I was so shaken up...my heart was going really fast and I was shaking until we left (which was fairly soon after). It's just so sad to see this kinda stuff, and know these innocent children are at risk.

No the mom said nothing to me. I saw the kids alone and knew I had to watch them. I don't even know if the mom saw what happened. I bet she thought I was being some paranoid person all up in her business...kinda like when dobie brought the child home safely. I wanted to lecture her, but it would have gone through one beer ear out the other. No point in telling people how to raise their kids.

It so great you were there. This poor girl will probably definitely have some issues because of this. I almost drowned when I was 3. I was at a family reunion in the pond. I wasn't old enough to swim, but i had a life jacket on & me & my cousin were on oposite sides of an inner tube, sitting on it floating. Well she fell off backwards & it flipped over onto me. The life jacket pressed against the inner tube & held me under water. I could get my face out of water, but just barely. Shortly after my mom noticed she hadn't heard me for a while & came running down the hill to save me, i could see her coming. But according to my therapist this is the reason I panic whenever I'm splashed in the face (like by a shower, or tall water slide) or when I'm in a crowd, or any time I feel trapped. These poor girls.....and there was no reason for it.

Thank goodness you were there for her TB! I think some people should need a license to have kids!

We have had so many drowning in NY this past couple of weeks, it's spooky. I wonder where those parents were? I am so sorry for their losses. It is tragic to lose a child, but you must watch your children 24/7.
