Spending Money

Ladies help as some of you know my hubby and son-in-law are going skiing to Colarado (Winter Park). The hotel they are going to is room only so they will have to buy all there meals out, hubby asked me to exchange some money for him to take so my question is how much do you think food for a day would be? I understand your tipping system is a must in America? ( here we only tip if we want). I have no idea what to get for him so would appreciate some guidance.

It depends mostly on where they eat. If you are being conservative with money, they could eat mostly fast food and save a lot, but if they would prefer sit-down restaurants with servers, it'll be a little more. I'd estimate $5 each for fast food per meal and $10 or more each for a nice restaurant.

For the other ladies, if you think my estimates are off, please feel free to correct me.

Does the hotel offer continental breakfast? Most hotels in the US do and it's FREE! Find out and if the hotel does have continental breakfast, then that is one meal that he won't have to pay for.

I would estimate at LEAST $5 per person for a fast food meal like Wendy's, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Subway, ect.. I would say $8 per person for a fast food meal to be safe.

I would estimate more around $15-$18 or even $20 per person for a meal at a sit-down restaurant like Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, O'Charles, ect.. After you add in tax and tip, it usually comes to about $20 per person.

If they will go to a more fancy restaurant, then $30+ per person will be expected.

Usually we tip 15% for lunch meals and 20% for evening meals. You don't have to give a tip at fast food restaurants.

I always say, it's better to have too much money and have some leftover than not enough money and run out. They will also need extra cash for drinks or snacks between meals.

I know that to eat on the slopes is pricey for what you get. It's been a while since I've been there and we always packed a sack lunch and took it with us. I would guess maybe $20 to eat at the slope and probably twice that for a nice evening meal, depending on how nice you want to eat. I'm sure that there's cheaper meals and I would check on the internet to see what's available.

Here's a few restaurants that show their menus and prices. There's a pizza place that isn't too expensive.

Winter Park is a great place to go skiing. We've been there several times and my daughter is begging to go back again this year!

I think Rebecca did a really good job on the cost estimates. It really depends on where you go and what you want to eat. Also, if they have at least a refridgerator in their room, they could save by buying their own drinks and maybe some lunch meat or something.

Those prices seem to be about the same as in Europe Highlans, only difference, we tip according to the service we get, if the service is bad, they get zero, if they do their best, we tip them a fat one.

These are the prices I was going to say also. And glad you mentioned extra money for drinks/snacks.

Yes, they do. In fact, you can even ask for more if you need to.

It all depends on what the school system decides. Every school is different here. Some will be & some won't. Sorry that isn't alot of help

A lot of the kids are having Spring break now and you'll find that it's a pretty busy time to go. You'll have some wait in lines but it shouldn't be real bad. If you ski the slopes that are further up you'll find that they're not as busy. Also, if you ski down River Run you can go up the gondola and you'll get back up to the top pretty quickly. Winter Park is a GREAT place to go skiing. They have great instructors and are very helpful. I hope that you get this in time for it to be helpful.
