Indian groom too drunk to wed, so brother steps in

I found this interesting, go to your brother's wedding and then you become the groom!! May have saved that girl from an alcoholic husband too!!

Indian groom too drunk to wed, so brother steps in
Mon Apr 30, 2007 7:57AM BST

PATNA, India (Reuters) - Villagers at a wedding in eastern India decided the groom had arrived too drunk to get married, and so the bride married the groom's more sober brother instead, police said on Monday.

"The groom was drunk and had reportedly misbehaved with guests when the bride's family and local villagers chased him away," Madho Singh, a senior police officer told Reuters after Sunday's marriage in a village in Bihar state's Arwal district.

The younger brother readily agreed to take the groom's place beside the teenage bride at her family's invitation, witnesses said.

"The groom apologised for his behaviour, but has been crying that word will spread and he will never get a bride again," Singh said by phone.

Wow. It is hard to imagine that's just how their culture is. I wonder how the bride felt about the new arrangement?

It's amazing just how different the culture is from ours, or anyones for that matter.

Funny thing is the bride had likely never met either of the brothers before, so what difference did it make to her? She still got tied to the same family with the same dowry I'd bet.

I can't imagine my family arranging a marriage for me! It's just too weird.

Hopefully she got the better of the 2 at least.

Really strange. Sounds like she may have gotten a much better husband though.

Goodness, that is weird. Hope she got the better brother of the two! I can not imagine having an arranged marriage.

wow maybe that would have been better with my oldest son's father. His brother was the much better man & closer to my age (we were only a couple of months apart. My son's father was almost 2 years older lol).

Seems like she got the better man. I hope so anyway. I don't know if I'd want my family to pick out a husband for me. I doubt that would've chosen Brendon (since they didn't know him at first) and I couldn't imagine being married to anyone else.

If I had have picked for you you would have never gotten married because I would have always seen you as my little girl. Since you did get married I think you picked a good one--Guess we'll keep him Huh?

Lol. You are so sweet. I'm lucky to have such a wonderful mother as well as an amazing hubby (who didn't show up to our wedding drunk, lol).
