There go my big plans...

I have had a pout on my face all day. I was thinking about Australia while I was at work, because my coworkers were trying to encourage me to get another dog and I said I can't if I want to travel. Anyways, so I decided to ask on YT if anyone had moved overseas with yorkies and what it's like for them. Then I decided to do some more research myself. After about a 20 hour flight, I wouldn't be able to see her when we got off the plane and she'd be transported directly to quarantine. She'd be there for 30 days and I'd only be allowed to visit twice a week. If I can't visit twice a week, they'd do their best to take her out for exercise at least 2 days. The only 3 quarantine places they have are nowhere near where I'd like to be living.
Layla is my baby and she adores me and follows me everywhere... I can't put her through that And I don't think I can live there without her. My parents would take her in for sure but I don't think I could deal with it. I almost cried my last night in Mexico because I missed her and that was only a week!!!
So I don't know what to do anymore... That was my big plan, that was my excitement.... and now it's all down the drain...
The more I think about it the more I want to cry!

Is there anyway you can do the quarantine thing in Canada before you leave? Don't give up on your dream. Somehow you can make it work. What about going there early, and maybe staying in a hostel for a month doing some kind of exciting work while she has to be in the quarantine.
You should go, and don't get discouraged. This is something you will look back on and be so happy about the experience. All I can say is Do It! I know you love your dog, but you will work it out someway. It may be a bit tough at first, but as soon as she's out of quarantine, everything will be dandy!!

I'm pretty sure I can't do the quarantine here. I don't think she's allowed in the cabin of the plane either to enter the country. I feel like it's selfish of me to put her through that much stress just because I want to go there. She hates being away from me and she's really nervous of new places and situations. I'd be putting her through an over 20 hour plane ride plus 30 days in a kennel It would just break my heart. I know she would be much more comfortable with my parents but I would miss her terribly.

Lindsey, if going to Australia is your dream, you can find a way to make it work. Go for it while you are young, or you will have regrets. If Layla is truly the only thing holding you back, carefully consider your options and work it out. Your parents may very well benefit from your gift if leaving her here is the best option for her. Once there, if you decide to stay for the lifetime of another pet, you can get another yorkie. It won't be Layla, but you can love more than one.

What a crummy decision to have to make. I hope you are able to come up with something you can live with. {{{HUGS}}}

I understand completely Lindsey. I could never leave my Joey, the others it wouldn't bother me so bad. I mean I love them, but Joey is my baby. The only way I could ever part with him would be if I had to choose between him and my son. My son would always win, but next would come Joey.

I'm sorry, Lindsey, but this sounds like a decision that only you can make.

I thought about it a lot last night, and I'm still thinking about it. My big reason for wanting to move there was to do something a little crazy and be somewhere warm... and come on, that's probably the hottest accent in the world BUT it's also a place I could go to visit, and not live.
There are lots of other warm places in the world. My plan while I was in college was actually to move to Arizona when I was done. But then I fell for Ryden and moved here to be with him (and of course, it didn't pan out like I'd hoped!) I'm tossing around the possibility of going there again. It seems to be much more pet friendly, and there would be no quarantine, and it would be much easier and much cheaper to be able to fly home. I'd be able to DRIVE (I'm not sure if I'd attempt that in Australia!), and it would be less of a culture shock I think. When I was looking at it a couple years ago, rent and cost of living seemed very cheap.
I guess my only concern is insurance and medical stuff.... I got scared after watching Sicko, and talking with the girl at work from Montana!
