Grandkids/facebook/myspace/depression
I only have 1 granddaughter, she is 14, adopted grandson 16, and my husbands granddaughter that is 21, I helped raise her and she is precious.
My granddaughter and adobted grandson added me on Facebook and Myspace. It makes me sick. The 14 year old has posted pictures and music that make me sick. One of the songs talk about guns, cocaine, killing, gave your mother a yeast infection, etc. The 16 year old posts about bringing condoms, I am just horrified by this. I sent the 14 year old a message and told her that her page was disgusting, and her mother approves. What a sick generation. Hope this makes sense, I am just crazy right now. Thanks friends.

I did not explain that right. Her mother, "not capital letters because she is a slut", approves her page.

My 16 year old daughter has wanted to post on Facebook and MySpace but I won't let her because of stuff like that. She stays busy enough with text messages and instant messaging on the computer. I figure that it's easier to prevent things like that than it is to try and take it back.

That's a good idea Diana. I let Ricky have a MySpace, but I have his password and check it frequently. I've never seen anything bad. He's done real good with it. He also has a Facebook, but isn't there hardly at all.
Even if we tell them they can't have one....they can sign up without us knowing about it. That's part of the reason I told Ricky he could have one....too much trouble to keep two of them up...lol.

Music
I really like to think of myself as pretty open minded and love all kinds of music but this screaming and yelling hatrid stuff is just awful and scary to me! My husband is a musician and guitar & music instructor. He recently was working with a student he was helping with an auditiion to a fairly prestigious music school. The student gave him a tape of the piece he wanted to play for his audition, when my husband put the tape in and began to play it, we nearly died. It was this guy screaming hateful things about suicide and killing his father. It was so terrible I made him turn it off immediately. Thankfully, my husband was able to persuade the student to use another piece (Aint Mis Behavin...talk about a complete turn around) for his audition. I think young people today are just numb to this stuff....

That's good that you two have talked. Ricky and I have too. So good to be able to have that kind of communication and for them to know what to expect. The two girls down the road were not suppose to have a MySpace and they both ended up with one. I think they did it at the library or a friends house.
I've seen their site when I've checked some of Ricky's friends and I would be horrified if they were my daughters. Their mother still doesn't know they have it.

I know what you're saying... I have seen the facebook pages of a lot of kids from my hometown.. of course they were just babies when I knew them and would babysit them or teach them figure skating, but now they're in their early teens and it looks like kids grow up too fast!
I never had myspace, but I had a couple of different websites when I was younger. My parents didn't know a THING about computers! But I had enough sense to not be posting pictures, and I never did drugs or anything so it was nothing except to update my friends about my life, and them to update me about theirs. It was the time before cell phones and text messaging lol. But now I think parents definitely have the NEED to have to talk to their kids about stuff like this... if they're not going to raise them and teach them what's right or wrong, SOMETHING is, and it shouldn't be the internet! Two of my grandma's sisters just added me to facebook lol

I'm on Facebook. Jessie signed on and learned that my cousin's son was looking for me. I don't remember how she found out about it. I have to ask her.
This is a weird story, with a very happy ending. There was a reunion of my high school class this year. They had a big poster listing those who had passed away. My name was on it! It still makes me really queasy! One of my old friends, who is also friends with my cousin, was there. My cousin and I were best friends until about 14 years ago. Things were not good for either of us, and she just stopped talking to me. I was totally wrong in my behavior. I don't remember if she was. I don't think so. I was also very close to her brother. I was going to marry him when I was a little girl. We tried to reconcile a few years ago, but the timing was bad. Jess wasn't talking to me, etc. and I was too depressed to get involved in such a close relationship. He was never mad at me. We just stopped getting in touch. Anyway, my cousin posted a message on her son's facebook wall looking for me and giving her phone number. Jessie found out about it and to make a long story very short, we are all in touch again and it is just wonderful. My cousin and I speak to each other about every 3 to 4 days, and my other cousin and I write to each other on facebook and talk every couple of weeks. I am overjoyed! I love them both so much, and it is so good to have them back in my life. I have tears of joy running down my face! Oh - our friend got in touch with the woman who set up the reunion and she emailed everyone who was there that I was very much alive! Facebook can be a lot of fun. I've found quite a few people I grew up with, joined some groups, and enjoy it. Kids do not belong on there posting what they think of as cool. If they stay above that, then it is fun. If not, it's dangerous and can ruin their chances for college, jobs, etc. I am very careful about what I post. It can catch up with you!

Donna, I'm glad that your granddaughter changed her music on there.
Judy, it sounds like you've really found some good friends from past years on there. I know that Jaci is very responsible and that I wouldn't have any problems with her using it. You just hear so much about problems on there and I just wanted to avoid it. Our school also has a policy that if you're caught on there you're suspended from sports. I think that there's been some problems with some of the kids at school on these programs.
