Everyone in this part of the country is gearing up for the evacuees. This time, I think a lot more people will "get out of the path". I just hope they can get all the hospitals/nursing homes evacuated in a safe manner. In our paper today, they showed a picture of a temporary hospital set up in a convention center in Tyler Texas. It is very difficult to take care of hospital patients, outside a real hospital. It will be a challenge.
I also hope they can help everyone without transportation get out. It was so sickening during Katrina to learn that many people without transportation were simply unable to find a way out. Yes, if the current path holds, New Orleans won't take a direct hit, but may get a larger storm surge that if they did get hit directly. I do think the water will go over the levees. I just hope that everyone gets out NOW. My husband has a fishing house on the Texas coast - about 150 miles west of the TX/LA border. It is built on stilts, so it will be fine, even with a big storm surge - which they shouldn't get if the current path holds. They may get lots of rain, but that will be OK.
