I'm sorry your wonderfully made plans didn't work out
 All I have to say is I'm glad my MIL lives over 3 hours away! She is exactly like your MIL - if we lived closer, I have no doubt in my mind that she would be calling on a regular basis needing hubby to go do something for her irregardless of whatever plans he may have otherwise!
