Janet, it also depends on what city you live in too (at least in Texas) because there is a state sales tax and then a city sales tax on top of that. In Austin we pay 8.25%. BUT, there is NO sales tax on groceries or medications. Also, TX has no state income tax, so at the end of the year, we only pay federal income tax.
In oregon there is no state or city sales tax (at least there didn't used to be).

We pay 8.25% on some things. It was drastically changed a few years ago, and then reversed for some things. I never bothered to keep up with it after the first change. It's not like I have a choice om whether to pay it or not!
It is great that you got to visit with your hubby Linda!

Ya got that right Judy....we sure don't seem to have a choice. We also don't pay taxes on food or prescriptions.

8.25 sales tax here in Houston too. I know some states don't even have sales tax here. Can't remember which ones maybe New Hampshire and 4 others I think.
I really don't mind paying taxes if it went to places that really required it and not stupid things like campaigns. I would like to think of it as donations. |

I'm not sure how but I missed this thread.
A city can add their own sales tax to the states tax. I know that ours changes from time to time depending on our town. Right now I think that we're at 7.25% but I could be wrong. It used to be that if you bought something outside of city limits the tax was cheaper but now they go by your zipcode. I know that to go to Oklahoma or Texas it's higher. If you're buying a car or something big it used to pay to pay attention to the sales tax but now they get you at the court house where you go to get tags. I know that Texas doesn't have any personal property tax either!! That makes me jealous!!! We pay a little over $7,0000 on our farm ground, house, and whatever else is included. You think that you're getting ahead and then......WHAM......you have personal property tax!!! Have you ever figured up what you actually pay in taxes? Sales tax.....fuel tax.....income taxes......state taxes......tags and registration on your vehicles......and whatever else........People would really have a fit if they knew how much they really paid!!! |
