We did it by hand with a post hole digger, not the auger. It really takes two people to handle the auger and to tell you the truth, I was just afraid one of us would get hurt bad. Doing it by hand gave us some exercise and we alternated so neither would get to tired. I'm glad you decided on the two handle one, so much safer. They probably wouldn't be too bad if the soil wasn't so hard (clay) like it is here in Indiana. I just didn't want to take the chance.

Now if you knew a farmer or someone with a tractor that had a PTO on the back to use one like that...wow, you'd have it made.

We have a tractor with a pto and we have a post-hole digger!!! The only thing is that Texas is a little far to drive a tractor!!!!! If you were a LOT closer I'd talk my husband into helping. Sorry!!!

aww thanks Diana... you are much too kind.... so the part that I need to buy for the tractor is called a PTO? Is there different sizes?

No the part isn't a PTO, that's on the tractor. I don't know how much one would cost for a tractor, probably a pretty penny, but I would tell the clerk what you want and what for. They'll be glad to help you.

Janet's right. The PTO shaft if what turns the auger so it can dig the hole and there's not too many tractors that have that anymore. I imagine that the auger would be a lot more than you wanted to spend unless you could find a used one. Everything with tractors costs more than it should! I would probably call some tractor dealerships. They usually have a lot with used equipment and they could probably answer your questions and help you figure out what an auger might cost.

If not, the good two handle one does the job just fine. Gets you a little exercise and a feeling of accomplishment...(yeah right...LOLOL). It takes time, but don't do it when it's too wet (hard to dig mud) or too dry (hard as a rock.)

lol.. well my uncle has 2 tractors and he said with his smaller one we can do my posts.. he just needs the auger or whatever it is that attached to the tractor to make the holes, he has one but it is for the light poles so the hole would be too big..... so I thought I would buy it for him and have him keep it for future use as a thank you since he won't take $$ from me... what fo ya'll think? And how much does it cost? What is it called?
