It's Finally Mine!!!
Today I signed the papers, wrote the check and now I own my mother's house. I had to go to the attorney, then to the bank, then to the surveyors, then the assessor, then the auditor, then the recorder. Now it's mine!! Also went and had the utilities switched over and got the key back from my brother. I am just thrilled and I could just feel my Mom smiling.

It all takes planning Jess...lol. For now I will try to rent it out. Since no money will be owed on it, the rent can be saved for insurance and maintenance....the rest will be a nest egg of sorts.

I think so too. Just make sure that you rent to someone who will take care of it so you don't lose money on repairs. You know what you're doing though because you already have one rental.
My Mom and Dad, when they were married, had a lot of rentals here in Fredonia. Dad would buy really cheap houses, put a little work in them, and rent them out but the kind of people they rented to were the kinds who tore the houses up or skipped out of town in the middle of the night. I can remember that every month my Dad would have to go out and collect the money because very few of them ever sent their payment in. It worked for my parents though but it seemed like a lot of work!!! |

That does sound like a good plan. I did rent my house once and I'm scared to ever do it again. In my case I would just sell mine but mine doesn't have sentimental value in it.

We have been truly blessed with the renters that we do have. They have taken excellent care of our rental home. I do have them fill out an application and I thoroughly check them out. Even call their employers to verify employement and attendance. We won't just rent to anyone. We also don't mind picking up the rent....it gives us a chance to speak with them, find out if there is anything needing attending to and to give the house a quick look over. It's in the contract that we can do this. We do call and try to make it accomodating for them, but after all, it's our house.
