Vegan Tamales
I am trying to be vegan for this month and today I made some Vegan tamales that came out delicious.
For the masa: masa, water, salt and coconut oil (instead of lard) Filling: lentils spinach orange pepper cilantro Salsa: tomatillos serrano peppers jalapeno peppers poblano peppers cilantro salt to taste Mix the filling with the salsa. Spread the masa on the corn husk and fill it with the veggies. Roll. Steam for about an hour. Let cool and enjoy. |

Sounds great. How much masa salt and coconut oil? Can you taste the coconut in the cooked tamales?

Gayle I never measure, so sorry. If I were to guess I say 5 cups of flour and 1/2 cup of coconut oil. I use coconut oil because I'm going vegan but you can use lard. I do warm the oil so its easier to even it out. Then I just pour water until the masa is smooth. Oh and I sift the salt before I pour the liquids and a pinch of baking powder.
I did not taste coconut at all. I prepare the lentils like usual. Salt, onions, garlic and few cabinet spices. |
