Feedings of Furbabies
Ladies I need help here, as you recall I had wrote that Gucci had an ear infection , it finally cleared up after about a month of ear drops , antibodics and stronger ear drops... It was very frustrating , and expensive with going back and forth to vet. having culture tests ... and the meds... Anyway here is the question.
Gucci always eat hers l/d dry food , I would give her the required amount for her weight she is over 9 pds. so I give her about 1/2 cup a day according to the package. I would leave it down all day and by the evening she would finish it or leave some. As you know Gucci had liver shunt operation over a year ago, and thankfully she is doing good. I know that on YT they are always knocking the Science Diet prescription dry food. I have no choice I want her around for as long as I can and keep her healthy. In between her dry food I was giving her milk bone treats. The vet told me not to give her more than one a day because of the fat context. She said to replace the milk bones with carrots and cherrios plain for treats. I have been doing this. But since I stopped the milk bones when I put the bowl down in the morning she eats all of her dry food like she is famished. I give her a little extra , but I feel terrible she is looking for food all day. How do you feed your yorkies?, are they suppose to eat once a day? maybe I should change and put the food out at night. I am confused because like I said earlier I use to leave it out all day. She is also drinking a lot of water , the vet said that the ear drops has steroids and that could be increasing her thirst. I finished the medicine today so I will see how it goes. I have to change the way I was feeding her...My heart breaks when I see her looking for food.. Last edited by Gina; 12-04-2007 at 03:46 PM. |

I'm not sure what to tell you Gina. I leave food out all the time, but my friend Lynne feeds her's 2 or 3 times a day. I have seriously been thinking of changing to a feeding schedule myself. Mostly for the poop...lol They eat throughout the day and also poop. I'd rather they poop on a schedule too.
As far as Science Diet...I get so sick of some of the YTer's saying how bad it is. My Vet feeds it to his and he doesn't even sell it. He use to, but doesn't anymore (and he never got kick backs either...I asked.) My Yorkies have always eaten it, nothing else and they are very healthy, good stools, nice coats and beautiful eyes. I'm not changing something that is working so well for them. My Vet even told me once that he wished all his patients were as healthy as mine. If Gucci is doing good on it, then don't worry what other people tell you. I also give treats like Sugar Frosted Cheerios, the Yorkie Yummies from Chattiesmom on YT (mine love these) and the carrot flavored ones from CollegeCutieUSA.

I free feed the dry all day to my fur kids. It works for them.
I also give them treats daily. Thanks to Mandy they are getting these cute little YipYap breath mint treats. Im sure you will find a feeding routine that works real well for Gucci.

I leave Reuger's food out all the time and I just fill a bowl. I don't measure it out but I probably should. I also feed him Science Diet. The girl that I bought him from worked for a vet and that is what she fed him. I have changed to the Sensitive Skin formula because Reuger's skin is dry. I wouldn't think that 1/2 c. of food a day would be enough for a 9 lbs. dog but I really don't know.

Logan weighs 12.5 lbs & he gets a 1/3 of a cup in the morning & in the evening & milk bones throughout the day. He is very svelte. He always acts hungry, but that's just because he's a pig.

Gina,
He's probably hungry because he's not getting his milk bones. The Science Diet is fine. I feed mine twice a day, even the little one who should be getting lunch. I give them organic "health food" treats for lunch. I would do the Science Diet and a little dry food at night. You can check out treats that he can tolerate too. I also got annoyed at the right way of doing everything at YT, although I learned almost everything I know about Yorkies there.
