Garage Sales

Janet says that I need to tell about the HUGE garage sale that I went to! So here I go.

I saw the ad in the paper and we all had a big laugh over it because it mentioned that they even had shopping carts!!! Funny thing is is that we used the shopping carts too!!! They had the garage sale at our fairgrounds in the largest building where it was inside (good thing because it was raining!). They had probably 20-25 tables sit up around the edges of the building and there were lots and lots of boxes all in the middle of the floor. Lynette and I went around the edges and checked things out and picked up a few things. Oh, and out of all of this stuff only 4 tables had clothes on them. It was all "stuff"!! I got a few little girl clothes for my daughter, Dae Lynn's boyfriend's daughter. I got a nice shirt for myself. I picked up a few Hallmark ornaments and a Mikasa ornament. I got an old perfume bottle that looks like an oil lamp to go with my miniature stuff. When Lynnette and I checked what time it was we had to hurry home because she had to get ready for her family reunion.

When we got home Dae Lynn was there and after Rick and Lynette left she wanted to go into the garage sale too so we went back in. I went through the boxes on the floor a little better and I found an old (I think it's old) child's plate with an alphabet around the edges. I found another miniature perfume bottle that looks like candlestick. It's so cute! I found a clear bowl that's what I call "oatmeal pattern" and a small bowl to match my Pfaltzgraff Tea Rose dishes. And a box of Vaseline bath stuff! Oh, and I also got 4 punches for scrapbooking! It was a fun garage sale with all of the stuff and exciting to dig around and look for things! They even had a lot of new things. I really couldn't figure out why they had so much new stuff. But they had lots of just junk too! You never know when you're going to find some little treasure!!! I love it!!!!

That sounds like a really great sale Diana!! You were able to find quite a few things that interest you....way to go. Maybe I'll be able to attend a few sales next weekend if I keep things caught up around here.

I was home giving dogs a grooming and hubby and son went to an auction. I didn't really want to go because it was mostly gas station stuff at a gas station. The guy who owned the station passed away and they were selling more than just gas station stuff. Hubby did get a great deal on 4 cases of motor oil...all for $25.

He was telling me the guy also did wood working and almost called me, but didn't. I really would have like to have seen all the woodworking things he made.

We have a city wide garage sale once a month in our town and I just love to go. It's really more like an antique sale, but there are also garage sale items too. New stuff is not allowed though. There are rows and rows of vendors - it is so much fun!!! I love to go, even if I don't find anything, I have a good time.

Gayle, where is it that you live? I can't remember if you've ever said. The garage sales in your community sound like fun. I love to find old stuff! I love antiques and I'm always keeping an eye open for them. A few weeks ago I got a really neat Gone with the Wind lamp for $50. It's very unusual and probably from the late 1800's. I thought that it was a great buy!!!

My MIL was into antiques big time and I picked up some knowledge about them from her. I also have books on antiques and I enjoy learning and knowing what I have or have seen. I'm really pretty knowledgeable about antiques, anyway some of them!!!

I love antiques. I had always dreamed of an old farm house filled with them. When I talk to my mom about antiques...LOL....she says she wants new stuff...LOL...she lived with that old stuff. Mothers!!

That's how my Mom is. She's not interested in antiques. Several of her sisters like antiques and when I visit them, that's where we shop......flea markets and antique malls. When my Mom's around we just drag her with us. She's started collecting some stuff so she has something to look for, but her collections aren't antiques, just some figurines that she likes.

When my Mom's mother and father moved to town from the farm they bought a wonderful huge old house here in town with the furniture in it. When they moved they had an auction and sold off everything but it was before everyone was interested in antiques and I was pretty small. Grandma wanted new stuff not that old stuff! My aunts have really been sorry that they didn't pay more attention and get some of the stuff.

I love garage sales and flea markets, but hubby doesn't and refuses to stop at them. I think he knows he'll get addicted. I've researched all my things and put printouts with each piece, so the kids will hopefully not trash something that's valuable.

That's a great idea Sandy, but too much work for me. I do have names on the bottom of things of who got it for me and where I want it to go.

I've done most of it at my boring job - nothing else to do so I look up a plate or sewing machine. Then I print it out and put it with that item. If I've got to sit in front of the computer, might as well keep my hands busy. It's interesting that just a mis-matched old plate can be worth good money.

Diana, I live in Austin so that is where you will find the Citywide Garage Sale.

I too, LOVE antiques. I can just browse for ages through an antique store - or better yet - an antique mall. I just love to look, touch, feel, smell, old things. I have many antiques in my home, some from my mom and grandma, and some I have purchased.

And you know what! My mom doesn't like antiques either!! I think that is very interesting. I love things from my childhood, in the 50's and 60's. Yes, it feels a bit "odd" to see them in antique stores (I don't feel antique LOL!), but I really love seeing them. My mom, on the other hand, would just as soon not see any of that, "old stuff".

I just think it very interesting that so many of us love antiques, and our moms do not!

I've been to Austin, Gayle. The last time was about 4 or 5 years ago when we went to South Padre. I had an aunt that lived at Round Rock and we stayed with her coming and going. It's really pretty in your area.

Have you ever gone to the "Dump"? My aunt got taken for her birthday and then took her sisters but I never made it! I would have loved to have gone too!!!

The "Dump" is near a dump or a converted dump in Austin, I believe. They have a really nice meeting house and animals living there but it's not like a zoo. Then there's a man who has picked up good stuff that's been thrown away and he has a building where he sells the stuff. My aunt had a friend that picked up a Dick and Jane book. They got all sorts of treasures. The house was really nice and my Mom and her sisters went and got to look through it because I've seen pictures.

Here's an article where a man mentions going to a "resale area" of the junk yard. I would guess that's it.

Here it is!!!....
