I can't imagine what the people who live there are going through. We had a flood that hurt a lot of people in our communtiy but nothing like what this caused. My heart goes out to Texas and all those affected.

What amazes me is the spirit that these people have - they aren't waiting for the government to come rebuild their lives - they are out there and taking charge and rebuilding their own lives. That courage humbles me.

This is one of the things that I do love about our state. And believe me, I'm not so naive to think that we are the only state so blessed. The people here for the most part are workers. When something needs doing, folks pitch in and get it done. One of the most frustrating things about Ike is that due to health and safety concerns, the government isn't letting people back in so quickly. I've seen some of the folks affected, and they have their work clothes on and are busy cleaning up and doing what they can to help others until they can get in to repair their own property.

When we had our last hurricane, my husband and another guy went around and helped cover roofs with tarps until the real repairs could be done.

When I have a flat tire on the highway, before I can get out of my truck, someone is stopping and rolling up their sleeves to help. It's really amazing.

We do live in a country with lots of really good people. It takes tragedy for us to realize how blessed we really are.
